Living Room / Re: Recommend some music videos to me!
« Last post by Curt on August 30, 2010, 02:13 AM »
@Edvard - your post confused me quite a lot. Van Canto is of course a thousand times better than Metallica, and I *like* their album, but totally dislikes Metallica's music, (except for Mamma Said). And opposite of my opinion about Metallica, I can take Van Canto seriously; they are not a joke, but well educated singers. So, keep banging your head...

General Software Discussion / Readability and Wikipedia
« Last post by Curt on August 27, 2010, 10:39 AM »
ATTENTION, all Readability users! Readability does not like Wikipedia's info boxes. Not only does it not display the box, it doesn't even grab the text inside the box!

This box simply became nothing!:

Yes, I am aware Wikipedia has a printable version, but that also has to be remembered by every other user of Readability.

it doesn't have the promised super glass effects.
However if you apply Glasser to the default theme it doesn't look half bad.

I have really come to like the Glasser extension (not a theme):

However, the author has so far failed to keep a homepage.

"Advanced" has already been offered for free more than once, including via the German chip.de: https://www.donation....msg214399#msg214399

If "free" is the main reason for getting this offer, the new user will want to disable the "Look for updates" option:

You may also be interested in WSCC, a launcher and updater for all NirSoft and Sysinternal apps.

WSCC = Windows System Control Center

Wow. From reading, I expect WSCC is at least equally as good as NirLauncher  :up:

maybe it is merely because the company is Chinese. So they don't know about the typos, because they can't read English!

General Software Discussion / Kingsoft Office 2010
« Last post by Curt on August 20, 2010, 08:57 AM »
It has been quite a while sine we last spoke about Kingsoft Office. I am trialing their version 2010, and was wondering if any one upgraded from 2007/2008/2009 to 2010? Are you satisfied?
 :tellme:
It still looks Microsoft Office 2003, only like an updated version. The asking price is $70 for the suite, Presentation, Spreadsheets, and Writer. No email client.

The homepage is http://www.ksoffice....soft-office-2010.htm
The office suite is not mentioned in any way at http://www.kingsoftsecurity.com/

Unfortunately Kingsoft has their own presentation template extension, named .dpt, the same as my Better File Rename droplets.  :(

As you can see, the colours of each icon shows how much space there is on each disk. If you point at an icon, it will pop up and tell the exact size. No other features. Perfect!?

As seen on the screenshot, the icons from Disk Space Monitor are displayed in a "wrong" order. I wrote the author and asked if this could be 'fixed', even though the program is very old. To my surprise he answered me in a couple of hours:

Hi Curt,

DiskMon will try and add the icons in a sensible order, but ultimately it is up to Windows how they end up being displayed.  You might want to try manually tweaking the order, by changing the Registry entry where DiskMon stores it's settings..
  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Jon Grieve\DiskMon - DefaultDrives

DefaultDrives stores list list of drive letters ("FEDC"), and you need to specify them in reverse order - again, this is due to the way that Windows adds system tray icons.

Beyond that, I think it is out of my control, and I don't really update these utilities any more.

Regards,
Jon

The one you really might be wanting could be another Disk Space Monitor; jongrieve.net's Disk Space Monitor. It hasn't been updated for several years, but works all the same. At least it does on my 32-bits Vista:

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: SideWinder for Windows...
« Last post by Curt on August 17, 2010, 01:32 PM »
We are sharing the news about SideWinder with others and we also want you to participate in this campaign. In addition to that, 25 lucky participants will be given $19.95 worth SideWinder personal lifetime licenses! (including A Free Gift Pack of over 150 Crystal Icons and full Free Updates for Lifetime)

I think our main intention is clear to you by now, still obscure? Share the news about good products (like SideWinder). Now it’s clear I think. But the main problem comes here. Sharing about good products is OK, but how to share is a big problem? One can tweet, share it on facebook, forum or on social bookmarking sites. But, is that sharing effective? For example, consider yourself only, if you want a software, will you search it on facebook or Download.com? Definitely on Download.com, right. So, sharing on software portals will be effective than tweeting.

Based on these kind of observations we framed these 3 simple rules :

   1. Download the SideWinder from any one of the sites below
          * Download.com (Recommended) :
            http://download.cnet...2344_4-75115544.html
          * Softpedia.com :
            http://www.softpedia...WiJ-SideWinder.shtml
          * Freedownloadscenter.com :
            http://www.freedownl..._Quick_Launcher.html
   2. Submit a user rating to all the three sites.
   3. Submit a fairly sized and professional review (could be a paragraph or more) to all three sites.

Once you fulfill the above rules, email to “supportATswij.com” (replace AT with @) mentioning your Username/Nickname (of all the above three sites) and Full Name and the same email address that you used to write reviews in above mentioned websites, with subject as SideWinder – TechiShare Promotion – August 2010.

Reviews has to be submitted on or before August 31st and winners will be declared in September.

curt, thanks, checking truelaunchbar now.

Just to give you a hint of what can be done, besides all the plugins and tools: I have shortcuts to my 250 most used programs, and shortcuts to my 30 favourite folders, in my quick launch bar, all just a click away and never taking up more than two icons. I could even merge them into a single icon. Also, if I want, I can make the folders virtuel, like I have done with "Downloads" (="Hentede Filer (1)") When I have downloaded something, the file is never more than a click away!:

The joke goes on, but now Americans must pay a little extra ($10) not to get PC Tune-Up. I think that is okay, because I tried it, and it sucks. I might just pay not to have it, because I have had it! (ehh?)
