Assembly / Re: What version of assembly? Any
« Last post by f0dder on February 11, 2009, 05:35 PM »
Friends don't let... oh wait, I'm not bringing that here.

FASM has an advantage over MASM in that it's free & has source code available - and adopts support for new instruction sets a lot faster than MASM does. And it offers pretty much what MASM does anyway, with the notable exception of return values from macros.

LOL, app! :P :P :P

The first image I got was this one:

dont-link-to-this-page.php.jpg

That really worked for me. Do I have to mention I'm a huge fan of Zelda 3: a Link to the past? :)

zridling: the "Dollar Store" one gave me a good laugh, especially because you coupled those two images - job well done, mate!

I really like the Patient Bear one as well. I must have a thing for bears :)

It's very bad for your health, and it will eradicate you of any remnant of social life. Bad, baaaad I tell ya! :'( :'( :'(

Living Room / Crazy brits crossing railroads
« Last post by f0dder on February 10, 2009, 04:50 PM »
Geeez, people!

One thing is crossing railroad tracks when the bars are down, but this is outright insane. The video has Danish speak (if anybody knows the original source, please link) but I'm sure you'll live - the interesting stuff is the video, anyway.

I don't mind swearing, but when it's overdone and for no apparent reason (like in this video), it bores me. Enough that I actually found the whole video relatively boring.

  • Looking into upgrading storage - and in theory it's easy: take one raid1 drive out, rebuild, slot bigger one in, rebuild, (start again for other drive) - done!
Hm, does this actually work? Depends on the filesystem I guess.

  • When you switch off the power because of raid1 and its functions it recovers automatically and there is no problem - maybe shouldn't do that too often?
Pretty bad idea - always shut down the box properly. First, rebuilding/syncing your mirror takes a while and is stressful, secondly you could get a fubar'ed filesystem (journalling helps a lot, but it isn't 100% foolproof. Which filesystem does it run?).

  • Can't get bittorrent downloading to work without my internet connection slowing down to a crawl - had better results using uTorrent but I know that program better so I'll put it down to me not being an expert on this topic. Might be router issue or my misconfiguration - I tried 40 connections per torrent and running 5 torrents max - ports properly forwarded. Updated firmware for Netgear dg834g
Has more to do with speed caps than amount of connections (unless your DSL/whatever modem is really crappy). If you're on DSL and have your upstream maxed out, your downstream will suck.

Check tools->options, "privacy" tab. You should have the "remember my history" checked, otherwise it'll be forgetful :)

I use unrar.dll in one of my projects, and instead of stuffing unrar.lib, unrar.h, unrar.dll and just using that, I've set up my own VS2008 project for unrar (instead of using their makefile), and I pull svn://my.server/unrar/tags/3.5.8 into project/lib/unrar via svn:externals. The .vcproj for unrardll is then included in my project's .sln file, and everything is hunky-dory.

Well, except that while I can build unrar.exe just fine, something messes up when building the DLL, causing extraction to fail. Need to dig into this, but chrissake the unrar code is messy, poorly structured, and poorly written. It's almost at the level of spaghetti of 7-zip :)

I have a pretty standard Gilette razor and switch blades every 1-2 months, and I use foam or gel. If I don't use that, or try using the cheap plastic razors, things get pretty darn messy and bloody :). Helps a lot shaving in the shower, and getting the skin hot and moist before shaving (that sounded a lot kinkier than it is >_<). I calculated the costs of shaving and iirc it was something around $5/month, which isn't worth obsessing that much about (sure, everything adds up, but I particularly value a good close clean shave without blood :)).

Bear in taxi is cute, the software development thing is pretty accurate :), and monkeyhitman is one of the better 4chan pixx.

1) it'd be very hard to detect this (reliably, anyway)
2) there's a big chance of breaking stuff
3) disk space savings would be extremely small

thanks for the pointer, f0dder. i never got in touch with the original patcher so i don't know how he did it, therefore your explanation helps a lot. i'm also curious to know if there is a way to show that the application is indeed taking advantage of the 3gb ram.
Look at it's memory statistics with Process Explorer or the like :)

I never heard of that one.
I don't think it was very popular, and the graphics weren't all top notch even by the standards back then. But iirc it was kinda fun playing - can't for the life of me remember whether I whooped the two (at that pointer VERY young) brothers' behinds, or if they obliterated me, though :)

I wonder if the game is based on the BUILD engine (from duke3d), kinda had that feel iirc.

I remember playing this game deathmatch with p3lb0x and the_other_brother, and since p3lb mentioned it on MSN I've been trying hard to remember what it was called, looking through old game collections et ceterea - to no avail.

I finally got clever and ended up constructing this google query - and lo and behold, there was the hit!

ERADICATOR, for great justice :)

My girlfriend and I do Valentine's all year long. Why restrict the feeling to one day a year?
Then you aren't doing the crappy commercial Valentines jig. Bringing back flowers to your dear one after a random day at work means a boatload more than buying a zillion roses and a ton of chocolate on that stupid valentines day.
