Image Manager Shootout / Re: Thanks Nudone, great review!
« Last post by nudone on July 13, 2005, 05:53 AM »
i'll look into that one, Miles.

if it gets a thumbs up then maybe we can add it to the review with the rest that were tested.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Feature Request v2 - appearance and name?

find and run sounds good to me, even in an anthropic context - you find something and then you run about. sounds like a fun game.

thanks Zaine, Miles and Jibz (and thanks on behalf of mouser, too).

always nice to know that you find such a review useful or at least worth reading.

camera manufacturers do seem to enjoy playing around with the RAW format but when there are tools like RawShooter Essentials 2005 it sort of proves that a single program can handle the situation. if RawShooter can do it, and it's free, then i wouldn't have thought it too much to ask for the major commercialware image management tools to work in a similar way.

i admit that i only tried RawShooter Essentials 2005 with a Canon 20D but i got the impression that it would work with all the other cameras as well. i could be wrong of course because i couldn't really test that theory.

it's definitely a bit of a grey area.

er, yeah, i think i meant have the window hide whenever it loses focus.

i suspected clipmate would do it but probably didn't give it long enough to find out.

looks like i'll be trying out clipmate again. oh well, bye bye clipcache for the moment.

the truth is i probably don't do enough with either of these programs for it to matter which one i use - hence the eternal swapping around.

i've got a toaster that looks like that.

:) i'm back to using clipcache already. i just prefer the way it auto minimises out of the way and i still think the little menu thing that it pops up is the nicer to work.

ah right, yes, sorry Scott, i see you did mention it earlier. looks like clipmate wins again.

it sounds like clipmate might have the hotkey or keyboard navigation options i'd want if i was going to replace clipcache.

just one question: using the keyboard, can you navigate through the different categories you have created when in the classic window or are you restricted to the default/current section that the 'tree' is set to?

i NEED them to be bigger, and in details mode, and have a list of my fav folders.

i agree.

but, let's face it. none of them are brilliant. i think it's about time someone had a go at making one that was quicker to use, i.e. more obvious to identify which favorite folders are which, which file types are which in the previously used file list by using the correct icons. anyone, hint, hint.

trying both clipmate and clipcache i have to say i think clipcache is underrated.

i'd say that clipcache has the better hotkey support by far - and for this kind of application that makes a great deal of sense to me.

or have i just been lazy and not looked into clipmate deep enough.

i find clipcache the more immediate to use when retrieving stored information. a quick tap of ctrl+` brings up a small menu of all recently snapped information in the clipboard plus a list of my frequently used items that i often paste into things. it's easy to select one of these from the menu just by using the arrow keys or the mouse.

if clipmate has something as simple to use i might swap over to it - i couldn't find anything last time i tried, though.

i shall definately investigate - i'm currently not using any dialog helper...

settings up a logical and easy to navigate set of common folders i.e. sticking them on the root, is almost as good as using any open/save modification util.

i shall no doubt change my mind by the end of the month.

thanks Zaine. must say i had no idea about the oncoming release of a new ACDSee and i'll certainly look at PicaJet and VuePrint.

thanks for the code too.

ha, ha. great to see all those screens again. i started on photoshop 3, stuck with version 4 and ignored 5 for some unknown reason. now i'm up to date.

i just wanted to say that i really did enjoy looking at the previous versions prior to what i had.

dude, how sad is that?

i've never put this to the test but i've just been reading on the web that when the recycle bin becomes full you will receive a prompt asking you if you want to empty the recycle bin - i assume, again, that this isn't really what you are after, mouser.

it's not for me to blow my own trumpet but i'll do a few things in illustrator after the graphics review is done if no one submits anything in the meantime.

it might provide a jump start if nothing else.

if anyone wants to scribble some ideas down, scan them in, then upload them; i'll happily tidy them up in illustrator if they need it - if they're chosen for the mascot.

how about something similar to it but not so as to become a copyright issue?

can't be that hard to do a freaky looking cat cartoon??????
3846
this isn't really what you want but it's sort of close - Emtpy Temp Folders http://www.danish-sh...are.dk/soft/emptemp/

it will empty the bin and other folders at time intervals if you leave it running...

i also like mouser's cat but isn't it from the simpsons - itchy and scratchy?

if so don't think you'd get around the copyright.

yes, monday should be okay.

i'll chat with you more about it probably starting from tomorrow. try and clarify a few things and see where we all want to head on it.

(i was trying to be clever and do everything inside a virtual pc but i've just hit a slight problem with picassa not wanting to display things with the graphics driver. so i just need to sort my main pc out a bit and install things on there.)

Backup Guide / Re: External Harddrive Problems....
« Last post by nudone on June 30, 2005, 08:58 AM »
the speed thing sounds right to be honest - it would be painfully obvious if it was transferring stuff at usb 1 speed.

if it's just the video files that are the problem then it sounds like a bandwidth problem or access speed problem - i don't really know what i'm talking about.

the files that you say are corrupt - does it still say they are corrupt after rebooting the laptop and restarting the external drive? i wouldn't be surprised if there is nothing wrong with them.

all these sort of problems sound kind of familiar but it's that long ago i can't be more helpful as to what the problem or the solution was.

have you used the laptop with many other usb devices? the fault might not be the external drive at all???

Backup Guide / Re: External Hard drive Problems....
« Last post by nudone on June 30, 2005, 07:54 AM »
master is the correct setting.

might sound daft but is the external drive recognised as a usb 2 device, i know you'll encounter problems if it's only working as a usb 1 device.

as for your video files, well, the bandwidth might not be up to it if you are trying to play certain types. can't honestly remember now but i know i've had random problems with things like that (might have been DV).

could it be that the external drive is losing connection? you might find plugging it into another port will help. again, i can't fully remember but i know i had to mess around trying all combinations to get a few external drives working - on other occasions they just work no matter how you plug them in.

i definitely try mouser's suggestion of sticking the hard drive into your machine - internally. also definitely try plugging it into different usb ports.

if you are using a usb hub try excluding that. and if you aren't using one then try one with it's own power supply.

i don't really know any technical solutions other than just trying to mix and match. probably a good idea to try the external drive on someone else's machine if you can.
