Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Simple Media Transfer
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 14, 2012, 09:23 AM »
For NTFS drives you can search for multiple media file types using Everything Search  "ext:" like this:
ext: *.avi;*.mkv;*.mp3

just separate each extension with a semicolon.  Everything uses MFT structures from NTFS so it won't work on other file systems.  But on the thumb drive you could use Explorer "OR" search.
At the top of the drive or root folder you want to start the search, in the Explorer window search input use OR as in
*.mkv OR *.mp3

Once you have all the files in the list it's a matter of drag and drop.
If you keep a text file of various search strings then you don't have to remember the keywords.

I assume you've looked on the popular download sites. Have you also tried SourceForge

Sometimes there's a hidden gem in the open source programs.  Adding Win32 to the search usually narrows it to Windows utilities.

To do all that multiple search masking from scratch is half way to a file manager. It's already been done for free too many times to duplicate. I understand the particular feature may not be there. But fast searches can make up for a lot.  Even Windows Explorer non indexed search should be pretty fast if you are confined to a thumb drive, esp. if the folder tree is not very nested.

If you want to sync particular folders to each other, I'd recommend FreeCommander. It has an intuitive Folder Sync built in and is free, as the name suggests.  Each tab has it's own history. Once you sync a few folders clicking on the input line for each tab pops up a history and it's quick to select each side that way. Sync has a check box to recursively include subfolders or just sync the root folder on each side.

All I wanna' know is, where can I buy one?
Act fast and you can pick one up cheaply at the FireFox sale.

I hope I don't have to camp out. I don't have wifi. It would be serious Internet Withdrawal or a cash advance.. or sumpthin' :)

Are the new Firefox versions coming with adware built in?

All I wanna' know is, where can I buy one?

Nope, it had to be Mitch, so you must be mistaken. I am a Comedy Junkie.

"That's a joke, I say, that's a joke, son."
Foghorn Leghorn

That sounds vaguely familiar. I must have seen that guy do his act years ago.
Either that or it was another comic, 'cause my memory is the guy claimed to know Pop.  :)

btw, anyone who tries firefox to see if they want to keep using it, should not even start to try it until they install Tab Mix Plus.

To me, this 1 extension is the make or break feature of firefox to me.  It turns a browser with poor tab support to one with amazing tab support.  (note: there are a couple other tab extensions for firefox, they may be equally good for all i know, but you NEED one of these otherwise ff sucks, imho).

So if you are a tabbed-browser fan, and have been dissapointed with plain firefox, you need to try tab mix plus, it's just packed with cool options.

Yet another example how I need to be dragged kicking and screeming into the current century.  :)
After coming back to FF from chromium, I got Tab Mix Plus just to solve one problem. But now I find it very convenient, even though I don't save sessions.  I can open links in new tabs to keep my focus on the current page.. then when the clutter builds up, just hit a mouse hotkey to close all but the current tab.  That alone makes it worth using.

As you can see I'm not one to jump on a fad.  I usually get there after things have gone out of style. :)

I once used a brand new air brush to clean inside a PC case (one that had not touched paint yet).  :D

Also considered using a bicycle pump, but I don't have the third hand that would be necessary to do that.

Inside the cases isn't that big a deal. But I'm glad the pump was suggested. Besides the desktop I have a bunch of twirly gig CD case holders for my jazz CDs.  It's nearly impossible to dust 'em. I'm gonna' blow the dust off with the pump. Maybe get myself some of those dust filter masks for when I do the big clean.  The air conditioner should pull most of the dust out of the air if I arrange to have to going during the dust off.  But I'll start with the desktop and see how it goes.

Miles, you should go into advertising!

That would make a great commercial!  :)

I've had a few ideas.  Unfortunately I don't think I'd ever see the reward. It's like when you try to convince your boss the way he wants to do it won't work.  This other way is much better. For months, years the guy won't listen.  Then when it's apparent he has no choice but to go with what's effective, it's "Now Smedley!! Why didn't you think of that? That's your job! Do I have to do everything?"  and you have to say "Great idea you had there boss" if you want to remain employed.

But when I was a kid and had a driver job, I had to fetch this Ad Copy guy from the airport to do some campaign for our company.  The guy was a very cool down to earth dude. He was a frustrated novelist.  He told me he didn't have the talent to flesh out a full sized novel.   But this ad copy crap was easy and lucrative. But like anything else, "it's not what ya' know, it's who ya' know."  :)

Heh heh. I have no desire to sing Soprano. :)

I wrote an icon save restore program using Jeffrey Richter's code adapted as a shell extension about 10 years ago.  Anyway, after messing around with desktop icons for years, I've come to the conclusion life is much easier if you don't use them. Sure as a temporary you might save an image or download to the desktop.  But to leave your icons there for running your favorite programs is more hassle that it's worth.

I find it far better to have folders of shortcuts categorized by task.  Just back up the folder someplace. If it gets messed up or deleted you can just copy it back.  I copy a custom icon for each folder to RocketDock but you can use another launcher or even use the folder itself as a toolbar on the Taskbar.  How it works depends on which version of Windows you are running.

As you can see by my screen shot, the only stuff I have on my desktop is RocketDock and the blue square is just s drop target for Free Download Manager. The transparent segmented window on the left edge is RocketDock if you're not familiar with that launcher.

Some of the icons in the Taskbar are actually stacks from free program Stand Alone Stacks 2. You click a stack and it opens to a bunch of shortcuts.  Again I have categories such as editors, internet programs, hotkey programs etc..

I have the folder that contains the categorized folders hidden away in Documents.  Out of the way it's not likely to be deleted.  Also any custom icons for shortcuts I store in an Icons folder in Documents, neatly out of the way.

Bing...we can confirm that it works perfectly well for looking at all kinds of explicit images.

Whose job was it to confirm that?  :P

If you mean the FF AddOn would otherwise work if not for FF version then check this AddOn
checkCompatibility

If that doesn't work you can manually change the install.rdf file as described here

A former boss of mine cleaned his PC's at least once a year with an air pump intended for balloons. That thing was not too big (so you could put it in whatever angle necessary) and more than enough force to blow away any dust.

When I was searching for some kind of air blower one guy on a forum even suggested an inflated balloon with a straw in it to direct the air flow.

edit: now that I know what to search on, I see them for less than $3. Trouble is the $9 shipping. :(
Oh well. I'll see how the bulbs work out.

edit2: Ok! I found a plastic sport pump at Quill.com.  $2.53 free shipping!!  :)
I can always use the air bulbs to clean my cameras. :)

I just have to be careful with the vacuum.  My Dyson has some real powerful suction.  lol  I also keep canned air in stock.

I can see the commercial now.  A guy points the brush nozzle at the keyboard. A bunch of key caps fly off and get sucked up. Then it shows them swirling around in the cannister.  The guy shuts off the vacuum.  A close-up of the transparent cannister. Some of the keys have stuck to the side.. right side up.  They spell out D - Y - S - O - N.   ;)
3791
I still have one of those keyboard cleaner things, but instead of blowing it sucks.  And it sucks in more ways than one too, don't have the suction to pick up a hair off any smooth surface.  I just use the vacuum cleaner attachment with the fuzzy tip....

I'm not talking about those useless pen size vacuums. This is the one I have, except it's a newer model naturally. Basically they changed the buttons to look more "modern."  But the body and innards are the same. The bit with the arrow slides out. There's a small brush attachment that inserts.  It has quite a bit of suction so that only the first speed is required.  The brush prevents the vacuum from reaching the point of pulling the key tops off.

It would be perfect for cleaning the desktop area under the monitor, inside the case, docking stations etc. if they just provided a flexible attachment.  But with a 19" CRT the angles produced by the stand are too radical to negotiate. Much easier just to blow the dust off.

3792
I have a Logitech G-19 keyboard. All of the keys are caked with dust on the sides and between them. I don't know how to clean it and looking at it disgusts me. What is the best way to handle this?

I've found either positive or negative air pressure will work. I have Black and Decker rechargeable vacuum.  There's a brush attachment that does a pretty good job with the keyboard.  Also I had a flashlight blower gadget. Trouble with the "flashlight fan" concept is the inexpensive ones are flimsy.  For the rugged ones they want like $80.  After searching the web I ordered a couple of rubber squeeze air bulbs that are supposed to be used for cleaning camera equipment.  They are coming from China.  They may arrive before the end of the year. It's hard to say with the Christmas mail rush.  In any case, if they squirt enough air to blow the dust off the keyboard or inside a computer case, I'll post.  I'm hoping they're good enough to blow the dust out from under my CRT and off my docking stations. I think for inside the cases if I take the side cover off and put that side down on newspaper that will get the majority of the dust.  Then just wisp around with the rubber air bulb to finish off.

Not much of a risk to find out.  They accepted PayPal. 2 bulbs for less than $5 with free shipping via mail. I hope they work out because I really don't like the canned air bit.  Seems like there should be a simple mechanical way to blow some dust away without spending a fortune.

I found the link

if you want to take a chance. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Is new Ubuntu 12.10 spyware?

I didn't see any way you can get to either of these pages from the homepage. AFAICT

Yeah. I liked Mandrake because they were very open about taking features of several distros to make something programmers would love to use.  I was using RedHat before them, and Slackware before RH.  RH was pretty good but the package tool/standard directory set up wasn't smooth. Too many things I'd have to mess with for days to get to work after set up with the package tool.

When I got Mandrake with APT it felt like cheating.  One or two tweaks and most things were good to go.  None of this 2 weeks to get something to work business.  That Mandrake 9.1 was a fun distro.

I digress due to nostalgia. :)  But the point is Mandrake never passed other's work off as theirs that I noticed. I got a very cool feeling using it and interacting with others using the same distro.

Does it mention Debian?  :)

There was always a buzz push to Ubuntu that I never liked. I was running Mandrake and hearing about all this miraculous new stuff called Ubuntu on all the sites. So I burned the cd and tried it out. Mandrake had One CD install via broadband, came up with network card configured and running to download packages, used APT and booted to an X Windows window manager.  Ubuntu did pretty much the same. Except Mandrake did it better.  The "new" thing about Ubuntu seemed to be the buzz engine behind it as far as I could tell. Now if what you say is true, the habit of ignoring antecedents has just matured to a stated policy rather than just being implied. :)

Hmm, is there any chance the Long Count Calendar just ends to force users to upgrade?
3796
Actually when I posted earlier about using the "portable version" it was misleading. I used a snap shot zip file and unzipped to a folder other than program files. It uses the AppData\local\chromium info and should pick up all your bookmarks etc..   But the reason I mention it, I think it might be a work-around to use a snap shot zip, let it pick up all the info from your installed chrome, then remove the chrome that's in Program Files.

I forget what they are exactly now, but I know the chromium root code google chrome is based on, is minus some of the intrusive nasties that google chrome adds.  The reluctance to be uninstalled might be one of them. I haven't tried deleting all my chromium folders as I still use it as secondary browser. I'm back on the FF bandwagon now that I have SyncPlaces again. :)

This link
shows how to add the context menu commands to Register and Unregister COM DLLs and OCXs.

There are quite a few free ones available for 32 bit systems.  A 64 bit shell extension to do it is harder to find.

General Software Discussion / XP style Version Tab for Vista and W7
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 08, 2012, 12:01 PM »
I ran into mention of this Code Project shell extension to add the XP style "Version Tab" to the Properties Page of Vista and W7. You will likely need to register on the site to download. But a hotmail or similar address should be good enough.

Version Tab

There's no need to read all the programmer discussion.  Just download the source. In subfolders that have "Release" in the name you find the compiled DLLs.  It has both 64 and 32 bit.  In either case copy the VersInfoEx.dll to the System32 folder under your Windows folder. Open an admin command prompt and run
regsvr32 VersInfoEx.dll

to unregister use the same command with /u switch
regsvr32 /u VersInfoEx.dll

I gave it a quick try on both my Vista64 and W7 32 bit PCs.  Seems fine.  It mimics the XP Tab that allows highlight and copy to clipboard of the values.

(Also it's not a bad idea to look around for COM Register/Unregister shell extension.  You just right click the COM DLL to avoid typing regsvr yadda yadda in a command prompt.  There should be a bunch around if you google.)

You can probably modify the code in this article

The trick used is a one pixel wide window for each side of the screen. But if you only want to trigger on left edge you would only need one window. It detects mouse move and gets the position.
