I use KeePass, KeePassDroid, and AI RoboForm for Windows; I'm aware that lots of people like LastPass, and DC has mentions of others, e.g Password Depot.  I've recently seen references to 1Password and Dashlane, both of which seem cloud-based.  Please, does anyone have experience of these, especially compared to the ones mentioned above?

Non-Windows Software / Android: recommend form-filler/pasword manager, please?
« Last post by rjbull on June 04, 2015, 05:01 PM »
All my passwords start in KeePass, and I use KeePassDroid on Android.  This works well enough, probably because I also run Clipper+ , but I'd quite like to have an automatic form-filler like RoboForm - preferably without having to pay an annual subscription...  Any suggestions, please?

Arsclip is good but I have never figured out how to merge clips -- or maybe it doesn't have that feature.
-aparente001 (May 22, 2015, 08:30 AM)
You can merge clips with ArsClip, it just doesn't use the term "merge" to describe it.  Here's how:

1. Pop up the Clip List
2. Choose Pasting Tools > Paste Selected Text...
3. Mark the clips you want merged
4. Click the Paste button
5. Choose from Paste (direct) or Clipboard Only, both in either forward or reverse order.

Have you tried starting the offending program from a command prompt, using START /MIN?

Have you checked the Troubleshooting section in PTFB's Help file?

There don't seem to be many dedicated alternatives now - RTVReco is really ancient - but a couple of free ones to try might be ClickOff and PowerPro (which does an awful lot more, and isn't for the fainthearted).

[Edit at UK time 2015-05-22, 21:07:-]
WARNING: I just tried ClickOff on Vista, and it was not a happy experience at all. Best left for legacy XP systems, perhaps.  YMMV.
[/Edit]

Three auto-clickers I've recently found, and haven't yet even downloaded, so don't know if they really do the same thing:

Oh, I mentioned www.moonpig.com on IRC...but you never mentioned wanting "multiple people" to sign it...don't think you can do that on there tbh

There's also
At least some of these can - I think - print images on the back as well, or at least, more than one image?  If so, could the organizer collect the signatures, then combine them into a graphic image, and use that?

EssentialPIM (EPIM).  The PC and Android versions can be synchronized by pointing them at your router.

If you're going the sticky notes route, you might like
Both popular on DC.  Popular two-pane organizers include RightNote (free, standard and pro versions).

AML Pages (payware) is a tree-form organizer with sticky notes as well, but I haven't tried its sticky notes.

You might try a free-standing bulk search-and-replace utility.  If you're happy with console mode and/or command lines, try the freeware MiniTrue, though on Windows it's probably better to use the version tweaked by Jason Hood here.  If you'd prefer WinGUI, take a look at the  two related programs HandyFile Find And Replace and Text Workbench.  I've used both MiniTrue and Text Workbench in the (distant) past.

The way I read it, from one of the UK magazines, was that the upgrade was automatic provided that you had automatic Windows updates turned on.  In other words, you wouldn't get a disk.  Given my very unhappy experience with the Vista Update from Hell detailed in Windows Update disaster - recovery help, please!, I would be very wary at allowing automatic Windows updates.  I know there are services like Winows Secrets that check their toxicity, but it's hard work going through all those numerically-named updates.  Oddly, when checking Windows Secrets' URL, I happened upon their 12th March 2015 post, which by amazing coincidence is New ways to get free Windows-installation media.

hulkbuster, there are already any number of threads on DC about notetaking!  If you only want notes, not reminders, you might look at MemPad (free) or CintaNotes (free and payware versions), both of them portable.

Currently reading:
   Resurrection Engines ed. Scott Harrison
15 steampunk responses to (mostly) 19th century fiction, e.g. Kim Lakin-Smith's conflation of Peter Pan with The Island of Doctor Moreau, Adam Roberts on the [C]rime of the Ancient Mariner, and Juliet McKenna's feminist response to Rider Haggard's She.

Just finished:
The Island of Doctor Moreau by H.G. Wells
One of the ur-texts of fantasy and science fiction
Soul of the Fire by Elliot Pattison
Latest in his "Inspector Shan" mysteries set in present-day Tibet, this one focuses on the increasing number of self-immolations of a people unable to express their protests in other ways.

Android Apps / Re: Other app ideas based on WhenLast code

When I do some job, say X, I save the date-time for the job, even gps if possible. After wards I should be able to get answers to following,
1. When I did job X ?
2. Did I do job X in this month/year ?
3. What jobs I did this month ?
4. What jobs I did at this location (gps) ?
You might investigate the abandoned program Inserty, which automates some aspects of text entry.  I'm relatively new to Android myself - I only know about this one from one of the other DC threads  on Android, which would be worth reviewing, notably What Android Apps Do You Use?, itself a response to Android apps micro reviews.

4. Quick note taking - Simple, may or may not have voice note mode.

Android Apps / Re: Other app ideas based on WhenLast code

Another wish probably not covered by WhenLast code: a decent cooking timer that allows you to save and recall named "scenarios," i.e. various times/titles for "put this veg on," "turn sausages," "put that veg on", "check pans," "Cooked!" etc., with a wide range of alarm sounds built in.  I use Big Clock, PocketDoan and Ramen on the Palm - sometimes all together...  I've seen plenty of Android timer apps, but none able to save a set of timers in a named group.

I'm a software enthusiast but not a coder. I find DC an invaluable source of information and discussion, with an unusually welcoming atmosphere.  The site is also amazingly easy to navigate; even though the forum is very active, I am often astonished at how quickly and efficiently I can find the threads that interest me.
That's my position, too.  One of the things I routinely check is Show latest topics.

I'm mentioning these things because I hope that any changes to the site will not come at the expense of the features I most value.
This worries me too.  The BBC changed the nature of some of its classical music programs years ago now, perhaps some suit's idea of making them more friendly to youth /newbies, and I no longer listen to those programs.

I wonder about the "newbie experience" on DC.  Are there any real newbies?  In the sense that, people will only come here if they're already interested in software anyway.

Living Room / Re: Sorry, Ebooks. These 9 Studies Show Why Print Is Better
« Last post by rjbull on March 02, 2015, 03:13 PM »
I prefer paper, but I'm trying to convince myself to add some digital capability.  Two reasons:
  • Owing to changes in the publishing world, some current authors are only able to get published at all via e-books.  E.g., Sarah Ash.  I suspect this may become the only way to keep extensive back catalogues in print, apart maybe from print-on-demand sites like Lulu.
  • Supposing I really do get round to reading them: Many of the blockbuster novels of the Nineteenth Century are fairly readily available, but usually as fat, heavy paperbacks printed in tiny fonts, e.g. the Penguin edition of Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White.  An e-reader would cut the weight and bulk while offering legible text.

I still use a Palm T3... and what you're saying sounds a lot like Handy Shopper for the Palm, one of the applications I'd be lost without.  However, if you search for "Handy Shopper" in the Google Android store, you'll find several apps that claim to emulate it already.

This is probably only a "feature" in games.
Virtual consumables paid for with real money?  I don't think I'll be going there!  :)  Thanks for clarifying.

Couldn't you use one of the password-protection apps, like Asus' own App Locker that was supplied with my Asus tablet, to prevent easy, casual snooping?

Is this available for phones, too? All phones, regardless of OS? And would it still allow an officer easy access to the e-documents he would need access to?
I can only speak (and only with limited knowledge) of the system I use.  If my device is typical, Android as an OS (at least 4.2.2) allows you to set an overall password for the whole device, just like a PC.  The app I referred to allows you to password-protect individual apps.  I'm assuming you would leave legally-required docs (at least, ones not too sensitive if seen by third parties) open, but your e-mail or whatever locked.  (There are other apps that can wipe an Android device remotely if it gets lost or stolen.)

And would an officer want to give you the time needed to activate it, before handing him the phone?
At this point, differences between the legal systems and policing poliies of different countries come into play, not to mention differing attitudes to the police.

Some of these programs have a freely-distributable viewer, and/or can compile a note tree to an EXE file: TreePad is a notable example.  I'd rather have the viewer than the EXE owing to UAC, installation permissions, etc., but either gives an alternative way of distributing canned text.
