Today is the day: http://www.giveawayo...-antivirus-firewall/

Thank you, Curt!
With the shenanigans I have been experiencing with the "new improved" Avast! 5, I have been "shopping!"

Hi MetaRoot,

Thanks for the interaction on DC (DonationCoder)!  It is always nice to chat with a developer.  :)

One thing I have not been able to find and is crucial to thought-flow, is a global keyboard shortcut to present an open note even if AllMyNotes is minimized or in the systray.  If it is there already, I would appreciate a heads-up on where to find it.  If it is not, then accept this as a request for a user-defined global keyboard shortcut (Ex: Windows-Ctrl-A, Shift-Alt-N, etc.).

Looks good so far and kudos for a usable free edition, although I can already see use for the Deluxe and I do have a valentine!  :-*

why not go and ask them? >> http://shop.reellogix.com/contact_us.php ?
I would if I had not already done it... let's see... 3 emails, 3 phone calls to day and 2 forum posts... eight times!  :D

It is really weird, the software is solid, well thought out.  The reviews (some 40 of them) have all been 5 out of 5 and their endorsements come from the likes of SONY Playstation, Rubbermaid, HBO, MGM, Disney, etc.  Click the link and see for yourself.

I just wonder what happened, oh well, there is always Outlook, right?

Update: see this thread.

Have you tried it on a newer system than XP? It MIGHT fail when you upgrade your Operating System! Other than that, I would simply go on and purchase it. Yes, I've read the warnings, and I also think it is a little expensive as well. But you are in love with it, so you gotta take a chance, don't you.

I have been using it on Vista and I have no plans to go to 7, so I am ok there.  As far as taking a chance on love, I did that back in 1982 and it has paid off big time!  :-*  Our 28th anniversary is just around the corner, but I don't know that a calendar program is in the same category.  Thanks for the comment. though.

Do you remember the old flannel boards the teacher would use to illustrate a story in school?  I am continuing working on a project (alas, my NANY 2010 app that was preempted) that would be a computer "flannel board" for my children.  There would be an appropriate background with people figures, chairs, tables, cars, etc. that would be dragged from a "palette" I would create and dropped at will.  Eventually, I would make the actions recordable so they could tell the story while the scene animated itself on the monitor.  If I was to also include recording their voices too, just think of how they would smile!  Who knows, it might just inspire the next Lucas or Spielberg.  ;)

I would appreciate it if you might share your thoughts about what...
  • Tools would you use?
  • How would you go about it?

FYI - I am not asking for pseudocode, but some general guidelines on apps that wouldn't break the bank and perhaps pitfalls to watch out for in the development.

TIA!

After a very long search, I came across the calendar app that "thinks" like I do and the 30-day demo has expired and I wanted purchase it.  It is... "The Calendar Planner."  Anyone use it?

Reel Logix... where are you?

The reason I ask is the certificate failed in the shopping cart, so I did not buy it.  I also discovered that the last review of purchasers was in Feb 2007!  What's up with this?  The demo was extremely successful in all my tests and I really could use the app, but I can't find a safe place to purchase it.  Any help would be most appreciated.

DC Member Programs and Projects / Click2LogIt! (Some suggestions)
« Last post by CodeTRUCKER on January 18, 2010, 07:39 PM »
This has been a long time coming, but after some consultation with our beloved metallic mandible, Tinjaw has expressed he may be interested in adding some modifications to his former NANY 2009 "Click2LogIt" time recording utility.  The following mods would make it a very useful app for my purposes, but your mileage may vary.  Please note there is no rush on adding the functionality as I hope to use it long-term; however, if it had the additional functionality, I could use it now.  ;)

Keeping track of time for billing is important, but the ability to identify and correct unproductive patterns pay special dividends.  It is so easy to get lost in the details or get distracted by email, the Internet, posting on boards, IRC, etc.  Having a simple, effective tool such as I would like to see Tinjaw's app mature into would be very beneficial in recognizing bad habits and correcting them.  It is in this light I offer the following suggestions based on criteria from my own real experience.  ...

First off, here is some criteria for requesting the mods...

  • The need to be able to track various aspects of multiple projects.
  • The need for a statistical summary report for each project.  An additional global report of all project progress would be nice to see the big picture.   An example is suggested later in this post, but here is what would be needed/desired on the report(s)...
    • How long it has been since starting on a project(s)?  Total Elapsed Time since beginning Project "A".  -  This helps to highlight patterns of procrastination.
    • How much time have I actually worked on a project(s)?  Total Working Time on Project "A".  -  This speaks for it self.
    • In order to get a picture of "what" kind of time I am spending on my project(s), it will be necessary to keep track of how many times I have left/come back to the project(s).  Total Session Number.  -  This would not necessarily have to be printed, just tracked in order to calculate the next bullet item.
    • Average Session Time.  -  Again, this can be useful to highlight unproductive patterns.
    • Total "Computer On" Time since beginning of Project "A".  Similar to the "Total Elapsed Time" except it excludes when the computer is off or in a suspended state.  -  This does not have to be printed either, just tracked for the following bullet.
    • What percent of recorded time has been spent on Project "A". Percent of Recorded Time -  Given that people spend time on the things they like and don't spend time on the things thay would like to avoid, this statistic could be very telling.
  • Provision for up to 10 simultaneous projects (more, anyone?).  Maybe this could be a user-definable quantity.  For folks that need juast a few they might select 4-5 and for power users, 20-25 might be the right number.
  • Addition of project hotkeys to encourage use by keyboard-centric users. (SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+1, SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+2, ... SHIFT+CTRL+ALT+0
  • Add color-states to the existing systray icon to indicate logged "in" (green) or logged "out" (red).
  • Option to choose 10 different sound files to provide additional specific auditory feedback.  -  Personally, I would record my own quick, "Floor Staining Design," "My Attic Library," etc. wav files.
  • Change "right-click" to a mouse-hover event to instantaneously produce the menu.  Menu would hide either by left-clicking the desired item or navigating mouse off the menu.  Keyboard users would use keys to envoke the menu.  Arrow keys to navigate, if necessary.  The ENTER or ESC key would hide the menu as required.
  • The addition of a simple "ScrtatchPad" (shortcut to notepad.exe to make quick notes).  This is easily worked around, but would be a useful and nice addition.
  • Hopefully find the right balance of extending Click2LogIt's usefulness while not straying too far from the original intent.
  • The need to let the "computer" do the work instead of me!  :)

Here is a mock-up of what the mouse-hover menu would look like...

If you right-click the "Click2LogIt" systray icon that looks like this (only smaller) ...
you will see something like this..

Below is the existing SysTray menu tree in black with the suggested mods highlighted in red.   The following examples are based on two simultaneous example projects ("Floor Staining Design" and "My Attic Library") with dynamic functionality.  The use of a permanent static menu of projects listed vertically could be used instead of dynamic creation depending on the coding work load Tinjaw would be willing to do.  I can work with a static list or a dynamic one.

  • About
  • Select Sound for...
    • Floor Staining Design
    • My Attic Library
-----------------------------
  • View Log File for...
    • Floor Staining Design
    • My Attic Library
  • Choose Log File for...
    • Floor Staining Design
    • My Attic Library
  • Change Log Text for...
    • Floor Staining Design
    • My Attic Library
  • ScratchPad
    • Choose ScratchPad file
  • Exit

Today, time management and related disciplines are hot topics and fuel continues to be added to the fire in a seemingly never-ending frenzy quite frequently.  This makes for a pretty fertile soil for the growth, acceptance and use of Click2Logit! a more useful tool.

If you are interested in the genesis of this project click -> Here.

Tinjaw, "Thanks!" for even considering this addition to your plate.  Maybe this could develop into its own child board?

This isn't actually a language question. It's a platform question.
...

Hey CWuestefeld, thanks for framing a context for me.  After some careful consideration of what I am actually trying to do, your comments and the above input I have to recognize that what I want to do and what I can do are too far apart at this time.  I might try it for NANY 2011, but with only two-weeks until my deadline, I would not be able to produce an alpha, much less a finished product.  I am going to put that project in the vault for the present.  I will see about reviving this thread (if necessary) in Q2/Q3 of next year.

Everyone, I appreciate all the help!  You have kept me from beating my head against the wall unnecessarily.

Save the "real programming" for where it matters, not using visual designers for your GUI code is a waste of time... trust me. (I still do some of my GUI coding in raw Win32 API, so I know what I'm talking about :P)
I agree there is nothing to be gained by reinventing the wheel.

:-\ :-\ :-\
Me too, but I won't know until I try.  :)

Living Room / Re: Best Free and Pay FTP Client
« Last post by CodeTRUCKER on December 15, 2009, 08:27 PM »
I am somewhat unfamiliar with this territory.  Odd, but I have never tried any of the FTP clients listed here and the one I use is CoffeeCup Direct FTP and was not mentioned here.  The main reason I liked it was it allows me to edit my HTML on the server without having to dn/ld -> edit -> up/ld.  Is this a common feature among FTP clients?

By the way, there is a $9 Sale going on right now.  One thing I like is a "Live Chat," but I haven't done too much research on alternatives.

Java is nice and all, but oh god the development environments I've tried (Eclipse and NetBeans) have their quirks - especially when it comes to GUI designers, which are quirky beyond reason... an the debuggers absolutely suck compared to what Visual Studio has. The refactoring support is nice, though, and possible because Java is so much simpler to parse than C++.

Since you've done VB, well, I'd say go for that - it's pretty darn fast to do GUIs in.

Thanks for the comments.  As it turns out, I was cleaning out a room and re-discovered a never-opened Visual Studio 2005 (Standard Ed.) prize I won for attending some MS webinars some time back, but I have been considering the trade-off of the quickness of production in a visual IDE versus the intimacy the coder gains with the textual-type syntax/logic

Sounds like a somewhat weird thing you want to design, btw :)
Hmmmm...  that sounds like something that was probably said to Galilei, Leonardo, Thomas and Orville.   ;)

I might try Java, but it is a whole lot like C++.

Did I read that right?  Java is very different from C++.  Simpler, better tutorial, (Sun Java tutorial) and a massive graphics API that make GUI development easy...  C++ is a nightmare to understand, but Java is easier, and better documented.  Not to mention OS independant  :D

I'd suggest writing a couple simple GUI programs to get the hang of it before launching a full-sized project, but they can just be simple apps that take an hour or so to write

I apologize.  I was writing about my last real experience with Java ten years ago.  Not exactly a fair comparison, right?   Ok, I'll give it a fair chance and we'll see what comes up.  :)

One place to look to get some idea would be on ebay, for equivalent prices on full boxes copies.  I'm not sure if there is an easy to to look at past auction sales prices.
Thanks for the idea, but I already tried that.  The only way I am aware to get history is examine one at a time, but it is a way to do it.

I wonder if there is a website for such a thing -- valuating objects by search past sale prices, possibly with some discounting rate.  Seems like it would make for a useful web service.
I put this in my "future projects" folder.  Thanks for the suggestion.  If I discover any, I'll clue you in.

My vote would be Java... override a few paintComponent (or paint if you use AWT instead of Swing) methods, read a few tutorials for the more complex drag n' drop stuff, and you're off.

Thanks SB - I appreciate the input.  Depending on the other opinions, I might try Java, but isn't it is a whole lot like C++?
Still, given the Netbeans IDE is priced right, I could give that a serious "maybe."

Hm... Well the description of the behavior wanted seems clear enough, but what escapes me is the logic behind why it needed/wanted. Honestly the first thing that strikes me is there has got to be a better way of designing the interface.

Note: I'm from the start with the guts and work out school of thought e.g. top down design kills me... ;)

Can you elaborate on why large numbers of randomly grouped buttons are needed? ...Video game code (snippets & etc.) might be a good place to start on the how of this one.

As far as language goes, I'm a broken record for C++, but if you don't want to spend tons of time reasoning out the UI code C# might be better.

Sorry, I'm not the only one involved, you know... some of the NDA stuff.  ;)   As far as C++ is concerned, I have to become very productive very quick and I have tried C++ at least 5 times and could never "get it."  I'm glad (and admire) that you can!  Good to see you back in circulation.  Do you have your gloves on?

Hello,

Due to health reasons, I have not worked since March 2009, so I am expanding my development scope.  I want to try an experiment that I have in my mind and if it works might be marketable to municipalities.  Call it a "Living Map."  I can already see other different applications for this if I can get it to work.  I am not tied to any particular code.  If I need to I can use (learn) Python, .NET, Java, etc.  My best and most successful programming was/is in Visual Basic, so I could leverage that but it may not be the best for this application.

As you read these present requirements, please observe if you would anticipate any cautions against certain traps or hurdles a particular language (yours?) would present.  It will use a main form with a sidebar.  Here are some particulars...

  • It will have a main form with a sidebar/corner-block.
  • There will be a stationary button on the sidebar/corner-block that the I can drag to the main form, drop and resize to my whim.  This would be just like dragging a control (button) to the form at design time.
  • This will be done as many times as I want to do so, anywhere from 2-100+ times.
  • If I drop it on the form on top of another existing button(s), I need to have the existing buttons make room for the new one.  This would require the existing buttons to...
    • Detect the new button was dropped.
    • The existing buttons would have to be recalculated and placed around the newly dropped button.
    • Allow any button to be dragged/dropped to anywhere on the form.
      • I guess I would also want a toggle/checkbox/radio-buttons to select if I wanted to have the button I am dragging to dynamically resize or to have all other buttons shrink/grow to make room for the button I am dragging.
      • It would be necessary to have each button "remember" their size because once the dragged button passes the existing buttons each button could return to its last established dimension, but...
      • ... if the dragged button's placement encroaches on the existing buttons it will be necessary for the surrounding buttons to assume new dimensions.
  • I also want to display text in different areas of the button, i.e., to dynamically display the dimensions of the button in pixels(?).
  • As a last option, I would want all the buttons to scale to fill the entire form without changing their relative position or the "aspect ratio" of the "view."

Ok, does that sound doable in your language?

I have tried to make the above as clear as I could, but I realize there will probably be some questions... just ask.  I am not asking for "how" to do it, yet.  The math and logic are already congealing in my head.  I just need to know if these things are doable better or worse in the [Fill-in-the-Blank] language?  Just because it may be doable, doesn't mean I will have the skills to do it, but if I don't try, I'll never know.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Developer's Corner / How much is Delphi 6 Pro worth?

Hi,

I might have a chance to buy a boxed and license-able copy of Borland Delphi 6 Professional, but since I have been out of the loop for a while, I really do not know what it is worth?  I'm still haggling, so the final price has not been set.  What would any of you think it would be worth?

yep, Spring kicked in a few weeks ago here in South America and let me tell you that the concept of a siësta becomes clear very quickly when it cools down to 33 degrees celsius at 23:00. Summer has yet to start...

Oh yeah, to be on topic:
Personally I can really appreciate a well kept garden. Having said that, I'm more of a person who mentally supports the gardener. Before you call me lazy, I do bring enough beer with me while enjoying someone's garden, so it not too bad I hope.  ;)

My apologies to you, Grorgy and anyone else outside of the USA.  I'm so cotton-pickin' "amercanized" I was completely "unaware" even though I have been studying global weather for years!  :o

I'm starting to get poll fatigue.. BUT.. this thread we can make a bit more interesting i think -- how about people posting pictures of their gardens!

How can you be getting "poll fatigue?"  You haven't even voted.

I do like your idea about posting garden pics, but since it is winter how about posting pics of their best gardens? :)

Hi!  :)

I have been gardening in one way or another for almost three decades, so I think I can help with a software tool I am developing.  I am just curious how may others on DonationCoder like growing plants too.  FYI - I am working on a "Gardeners" badge too!

Thank you for your input.

I like my OS being able to manage 8gb, even if most my apps are still 32bit :)

At least two things are constant.
  • You can never have too much RAM.
  • You can never have too much disk space.

Maybe we ought to make it a triad...
  • You can never have too much speed!  Vaaaarrroooommm!

Scripting Languages use variables - example: VBScript.

How about this...

The only reason that any one conceives of VBScript, Javascript, etc. IMIO is because the "script" moniker was hung on to the name.   Would it (them) be known as "script" if the author(s) had named them "VBExtra," "JavaRod," etc.

Could this be a valid explanation?

Yes.  They are most definitely scripting languages.

Ok, I'll play the stooge...

No, no, no you missed the point!

Quite honestly it sounds like your ideas may fit into some bigger ideas that are being worked on for the future of DC and beyond. Maybe your idea would be encompassed within, or a useful addition to that. If you can wait a few months there will probably be more to talk about in that regard.

Thanks for the reply and the encouragement.  [Calvin moves "DC List" idea to back burner pilot light in hot water heater closet.]

Let me know if/when/how I can help.  After NANY I might dig into the idea myself on pligg, maybe.  I'll give a heads up if/when that happens.

As for what do you graduate to a programmer, runner, etc? Well when you're there you'll know you're there but won't know when you got there. :D

So, where does that leave us in this debate?  Are we doomed to be scripters and not programmers, programmers that never scripted, until we get to the place where we know we are not just programming scripters since programmers that had previously not scripted, but are now scripting programmers and scripters that had never programmed are finally deemed the weakest of programmers to be scripters and the weakest of strong scripters that will never be deemed programmers?

Need to be able to pick more than one option!

Anyway I say both will still be here in 10+ years time. As will their successor(s?).

Tried to do that for you, but it won't let me edit that option, Sorry. :(
