General Software Discussion / Re: photo duplicate scanner
« Last post by Curt on November 11, 2010, 05:14 AM »
Seems like both AntiDupl & UniqueFiler have their bugs, AD finds a bunch of quasi-equal images (few pixels different for a 1280*1024 image)

I would not call this a bug, but a feature. They all try to find 'similar' pictures.

----------------------------

You people are suffering from retrofixial!   :o
btw Curt it seems I need a larger (and I mean much much larger) dictionary.
It's an Americanism - ie. make up a word when the right one doesn't seem right, (or comes to mind)
-yeah, I know, the proper word is retrofixiation, but i couldn't spell it.
I already have all sorts of dictionaries, they couldn't spell it either...

Now, what must I do to get retrofixiation officially recognized? I guess I could try to write down an article to be posted in one of the major magazines, but I have a strong feeling this may sound a heck of a lot easier said than done. I had the same problem with Vistable. Hmm... maybe I should just try to learn proper English?

Well, the new Scrivener version is not "extremely" buggy; I merely found a couple of items. But there will quite soon be another version to test. However, the "freeware" concept that I was assuming, is quite wrong: This is a test version and nothing more.

General Software Discussion / Scrivener for Windows
« Last post by Curt on November 10, 2010, 02:25 AM »
Just when Scrivener 2 for Mac has been launched, here comes Scrivener for Windows!

Scrivener for Windows Beta 3
The writing tool designed with serious writing in mind comes to Windows

Developer: Literature & Latte
Software Cost: Free

http://downloads.pca...r-for-windows-beta-3

I have heard so much good about Scrivener for Mac, that I am grabbing this free beta at once! Scrivener for Mac is listed as $45, so the freeware policy *may* be for this beta version only. I don't know.

As any writer will tell you, there are several obstacles that getting the way of words down on paper, or on screen. As well as time constraints and the ever-present spectre of writer's block, there is also the problem of organising notes and ideas as well as managing lengthy documents as your ideas start to come to life.

Whether you are writing a thesis, a novel or a script, Scrivener is a powerful writing aid that can be used to organise notes, try out different ideas, view ideas alongside completed passages of text and much more; the app is a word processor and project management tool rolled in to one.

Scrivener enables you to create order from chaos, making it possible to focus in on small sections of your text in isolation from your other notes and research, or view projects as a whole to get a better idea of what sort of progress is being made. Unlike a word processor, you are free to organise documents in any way that works best for you and the order of text can be easily adjusted.

Working in outliner mode, Scrivener can be used to plan a project, while virtual index cards can be used to brainstorm ideas. You can also use the app solely as a means of collecting research material or to edit through rough drafts of a file. Whatever way you prefer to work, Scrivener is on hand to help you along.

Verdict:
A hugely impressive writing aid that can be of assistance to everyone from script writers and novelists to students and professionals.

The protection of personal data is a real problem these days, however, uOrganized can password protect and encrypt your information using Blowfish encryption algorithm. Also, uOrganized will make backups of your data automatically each day so if something unexpected happens your data is in the Backup folder.

Tuxman, why don't you help the rest of us out and start a thread about... Windows Explorer Secrets revealed!

Should such a thread be anything but links to the many sites that already are covering the subject, and are covering it well? Quite a number of people have made a living out of revealing such alleged secrets!

I wish Grab Some Deals good luck; but I must say that we have seen more than one of the kind come and go. However, this one looks as if the people behind are very well prepared.

how do I know that this one is xy-plorer and not xyp-lorer or x-yplorer?

Now having tested Unique Filer 2 Beta, I cannot keep silent:
You people are suffering from retrofixial!   :o

1) Unique Filer is not "more intuitive". You have just used it for so long that you have come think this is how it should be, because this is how it always were!

2) Unique Filer is fast, but not "faster scanning". In fact, AntiDubl is twice as fast!
Unique Filer used 10 minutes, AntiDubl used 5 minutes. (5.800 jpg and png photos)

3a) Unique Filer's result is not quite "accurate enough" for me: During the initial scanning, ("Analyze All"), the program stopped twelve times to tell me that a file was missing! (The program didn't go back to work until I had clicked 'okay'! What a bummer!) MAYBE Unique Filer are having problems reading certain modern file types, I don't know, but no other program thinks I am missing 12 photos in my collection. And how can I know anything about these 12 photos? The program gave me no file name, no nothing, just "a file is missing > Okay"!

3b) The Dupe Finder part of Unique Filer is exceptional fast, and makes me agree with sajman99: "I would have loved to see Unique Filer developed further". But maybe it is just too fast. I don't see why these two pictures should be listed as almost identical:

1200x912 pixels:

A-10 Worthog by hdrshooter.jpg

1024x805 pixels:

Casa Batlló Barcelona by Xavier Fargas.jpg

Do you?

Yes, I would have loved to see Unique Filer developed further,
but Unique Filer is outdated  and not good enough for me.

Am I missing something or are you really forced to making a decision from looking at 2 thumbnails ?

-yes, you are missing something ;-)

First of all, regarding the thumbnails, well, you can db-click them, and they will open in your default viewer. Secondly, between the two thumbnails, the size of each picture is listed. Thirdly, the word "difference", means "not identical". Just how different the two pictures are from each other, is listed in percentage.

Actually, I only came to tell that AntiDubl.NET once again has been updated, and now is at version 1.6.

2010-11-06.gif

Regarding Unique Filer; their "secure server", sohosafe.com, cannot be confirmed to be safe.
The fine AntiDubl.NET is freeware ;-) http://antidupl.naro...u/english/index.html

Worth it? Of course! -most would say. Like many others, I purchased such a discounted Pro lifetime license just a few months ago. Now I don't even have the program installed! I simply don't bother to TRY to learn how to use the (powerful) scripting. If you understand scripting at all, XYplorer Pro may just be the thing for you, but if you don't, XYplorer may still be a fine Explorer replacement, but only just. Is what I think.

ATTENTION! When Proxomitron is warning: "Demo  showing a couple of events that may trigger popups and other things. Not for use without Proxomitron" - they mean it!! 220 windows will pop up, if you click 'allow', without Proxomitron installed !!!

It was almost funny...

I wonder if they will run Monday's History Explorer offer again. I, for one, never got the chance to get it. "This giveaway is not available any more" - hopefully they don't mean it too literally!

Also, I am a little mad at myself. I won DC's previous drawing, and was given the choice between a lifetime license for USB Safely Remove or 1 year's license for Zentimo. I clicked 'Zentimo', but today Zentimo is free for everybody, and I wish I had clicked a lifetime license for the other one instead. Zentimo is overkill.

Dear April

It made me sad to read your post, because you have helped me (and others) so many times, that it seems double unfair that you should feel bad about anything related to computing. You have been a beam of sunshine on DC's forum, and I thank you and hope you will keep hanging out here.

You have had to realize something unpleasant and take a hard decision, and to this I can relate. (Only, I screwed up my plans myself). But today I know from experience that killing your darlings, is important, when they turn out to merely be fixed poor ideas. My point being that from NOW on it is more likely to be getting better and even better, with your life, simply because you've said goodbye to a fixed unrealistic idea, and your next ideas will be of a more mature and realistic nature.

This poster is not a cheap street-wise joke to me, nor should it be to you or anyone else:
