General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Announced

I could use a nice lightweight (Windows) Laptop that doesn't cut my bank account to ribbons.

Depending on how literally you meant 'lightweight', Acer is coming out with the Cloudbook at USD169, to compete with the HP Stream series, which seem to be going for around USD230.

Thanks for the tip.  I'll take a look.  :)

I thought to take a look at that HP Stream for my wife and daughter to share.  And quickly looked away.  In use, it's very laggy, even doing basic things.  That was with windows 8, but it was *bad*.  It was masked because of the SSD, but it was still nothing that I'd put up with.  So unless performance is not a consideration *at all*, I'd recommend a steer clear of the HP Stream.

I'm not bleeding yet, so I think I'm ok.  Of course, that's on my laptop, not on my primary computer...

Perhaps you can point me in the right direction. I could use a nice lightweight (Windows) Laptop that doesn't cut my bank account to ribbons.  Then I could use the Toshiba as a guinea pig machine.  I'm taking a computer repair class and eventually I will succumb to the temptation of upgrading ram or some other excuse to pry the box open and screw things in, or up, or something.  :)

Laptop purchases are a minefield that I've not learned to fully negotiate- especially on the low end.  I have a Dell Inspiron 7000, and it works very well for me, and was not exorbitantly expensive- but I had a lot of discounts to make it so.  But it is a good computer.

"As you already know"?

It seems that there is subtext in your answers that point to a prior conversation and relationship.

Please elucidate us, so no one will walk into a minefield?

No offense was intended by my post. I have nothing but the most sincere admiration for Don and his work with XYplorer--so much so that I will in all likelihood purchase the software when the changes are implemented. Conversely, I feel that, as a consumer, I have the right to keep my options open. Looking at things honestly: I have not signed any contract to purchase XYplorer, nor has Don signed a contract to adapt the software to suit my personal needs and wishes.

Agree totally!  I was just asking as we've had arguments from other boards spill over here before, and considering the inflammatory nature of some of the parts of highend01's response, I wanted anyone that was getting into the thread to know of any subcontext.  I've run into such arguments unknowing before, and it's not fun.

Posting from Edge in Windows 10.  No problems upgrading from the upgrade wizard.

I hope posting from the edge is more fun than living on the edge.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Permission for a portable version
« Last post by wraith808 on July 30, 2015, 07:23 PM »
Anybody else notice that thread it 3 years old?
-Stephen66515 (July 30, 2015, 04:28 PM)

I just looked at it as the OP updating the thread with new information, i.e.

for Screenshot Captor there is only an older portable version (4.5.0) available at PortableApps.com available:
http://portableapps.com/node/30465

I suppose he could have created a new thread... but why?

Screenshot Captor / Re: Permission for a portable version

Hello,

You don't need the portableapps-version.
Download the portable zip-version right from donotioncoder at:
https://www.donation...hotcaptor/index.html

I know this, in my posting above I wrote:

I know you offer a "normal" portable Version at your site, but this must be updated manually.

A PortableApps version has the advantage, that it is automatically updated to the current version as soon as mouser uploads a new version to PortableApps.com
When I use the portable version from this website, then I always have to update the portable version on each PC manually (we have some "specialists" that can not perform this, so this is my job).

There is the DC Updater application that does this for you also.

Additional Important information
The boss of PortableApps (John T. Haller) wrote in this posting: http://portableapps....00392#comment-200392
that Screenshot Captor contains Nagware (the registration reminder), so it will not be published at PortableApps.
So if you plan to release a PortableApps version, please remove the registration reminder there.
Thank you!

Greetings

OLLI

That's not the substance of that thread IMO.  There was never a decision reached.

Also, you can look to see that mouser responded, but there was never a definitive response.

http://portableapps.com/node/34908

I'm not sure of the substance of any response- mouser would have to weigh in on that.

Either the picture is misleading, the specs are lying, or it will burn up on arrival LOL :)  There's a reason for the specs on the CPU.

I really, really, really dislike the "endless scrolling" method. It never really seems to work with how I want to use a site, it tends to get progressively slower (not sure if it's database access or too much crud in browser memory), and it's hard to search. I haven't checked discourse in a while, so it might have gotten better - but it sucked in this regard last time I checked it :)

You can do it very wrong... and though you can get pagination wrong, it's never exceptionally wrong.  There are some things that annoy me about SMF in general, and DC in particular on that regard.  But nothing that would make me go ick.

Developer's Corner / Re: Syntax in Different Programming Languages
« Last post by wraith808 on July 27, 2015, 02:02 PM »
How useful is a site like HyperPolyglot, though?

If you're at a proficiency level with the target language that you need to site, will you be able come up with something useful by looking at a cheat sheet? I don't think a"mechanical translation" like that wouldn't end up would result in good code, unless that languages are extremely similar (Java <> C#, for instance).

I think something that would be valuable would be samples of how to write ideomatic code in the target languages (requiring the user to be familiar with basic syntax) - but it's hard to do that with side-by-side comparisons, since different languages tend to solve different problems.

Very well stated, and this is exactly what I was trying to say earlier.

I always use "unread since last visit" — it's my main point of entry to DC. I'd be really sorry to see that go  :(
-cranioscopical (July 26, 2015, 07:33 PM)

I can see why it would be useful... those days when I have 4 pages of threads because I haven't been religiously reading them, but I want a place to wade in.

It has been some time since I've clicked on "unread since last visit" - I do click on "Show unread posts".

Plug - A Short Film about robots raising the last human girl on earth.

https://vimeo.com/109873939

Directorial debut from internationally renowned designer and concept artist, David Levy (Tron legacy, Prometheus, Ender's Game, Tomorrowland, Avatar2). The short film is the first 15 minutes of a science fiction TV series Levy has outlined and hopes to film. Unlike the highly VFX-ed science fiction films inundating audiences today, PLUG is a return to 1970's classics like Star Wars and Mad Max with a gritty universe made from mostly live props and real life settings. Enjoy and share!

"On a post-apocalyptic Earth, Leila Dawn (Natalie Floyd), is the only human survivor. Raised by Robots after humanity abandoned the planet they destroyed with nuclear warfare, Leila cannot forget her parents nor ignore her yearning to find other organic life. A hunt she sets out on with a Military Unit, Marker (Lex Cassar), leads Leila to discover the reality she’s been denied—a reality that sparks her ultimate quest."

Living Room / Re: Your favorite cartoons of yesterday and today?
« Last post by wraith808 on July 25, 2015, 08:36 PM »
I don't know how I hadn't seen this before.

I also dont know how Starblazers/Space Battleship Yamato, Harlock, and Robotech haven't been mentioned!

And no one's gone the Japanimation/anime route!

There's definitely some good ones there. (Crying Freeman, Yu Yu Hakusho, Berserk, Code Geass, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Mushishi, Grey, Serial Experiments Lain, Planetes, Mobile Suit Gundam Wing, Last Exile, Samurai Champloo, Death Note, and my Favorite - AD Police, and too many more to list!)

And Aqua Teen Hunger Force!

Cartoons and by extension Anime are my favorite short form and long form.

well, i think we should distinguish two kinds of devices, that may have different roles to play.

You found the WD TV -- that will have LESS flexibility, LESS expandability, and LESS POWER (?) -- but it will be a set top box, preinstalled with software ready to be a media player with a nice interface.
I gather that the Zbox unit is basically a windows box, designed for use as an htpc.  So you'll still have to install media software, show the person how to run the right programs, etc.

So for setting up a non-pc-savvy family relative, you might still have some pros and cons to weigh..

Yes, less on the flexibility. It really depends on what you mean by expandability.  If it's storage, then the answer is no.  Less power?  Than these zotacs?  Not by much if at all, and definitely less noticable, since the interface is made for the power.  I've had one of these mini-devices, and it was a lifesaver when my wife and children's mains went down... we just cycled them through it, and other than the fact that my wife lost use of photoshop, they were great for browsing and using office.  But they were definitely quite slower.
are you saying the zotac will struggle more with video playback than the WD TV?

Not necessarily.  But in my experience, it was so.

The box I have is http://www.newegg.co...Item=N82E16856119072, so my experience was a couple of years ago.  But it was a bit slower to decrypt, and of course you had to put on all of the codecs, and it still wasn't enough.

A link to mark as read is in drop down menus on other forums by default. vBulletin's had it since v.2 for example

That wasn't to say that there shouldn't be a way to mark forums read- just that it shouldn't be in that particular drop-down if the label for the dropdown is is GoTo.

I'm sure if it's really needed/wanted, there's some sort of plugin for it somewhere.  Necessity being the mother of invention and all.  And if it's not, we could code it up.  I guess that's why features never mattered that much to me in most of the forums.
3747
I've been using classic forums for about 20 years, and I hate FB. Discourse I am not yet sure about, I *really* like some aspects, dislike others. But it's a young system and they're actively improving it. Watching the Meta forums on Discourse.org you see a lot of interesting discussion and development and it's encouraging, to me at least.

- Oshyan

I've been using 'classic' forums for quite a while, and have liked some, and not liked others.  In the end, it's a matter of the community rather than the features to me as a user.  On the admin side, that's a different ball of wax.  But in use, it really doesn't matter- each has things I like and don't like.
3748
I just went back and checked out dirhaels post, that is a very slick build.

The request right now is just to play back video.  I checked the wd live box, and it can play all video including mkv.  Nice.  Perhaps I should avoid the whole building thing.

mouser, that is good advice I think at this point.  And tbh, i don't really want to build a pc again.

I hate hearing about the death of the htpc, lol.  I'll never give it up.  I'll keep trying to make it smaller, and quieter, and more powerful, so that will never end.

wraith, can you give me an idea of the streaming power of the WD TV?  Does it have a hard time with anything, large mkv, bluray files?  How is seeking back and forth, pleasant?

Right now, I have the 1TB version in all locations but one.  I have my less used stuff on my NAS (and all the music) and my more commonly used stuff on my the Box.  Now, they're all over the house, so I get different response- it's based on reception.

I don't rip blu-ray, only DVDs as I'm trying to maximize space.

Within those constraints, the only time I've seen it have a hard time is if my other devices are having a hard time in the same location getting to the router.  It does take a bit to buffer if I'm on the NAS, but inherently it's fine and browsing is fine... so much so that the rest of the family who wouldn't touch the HTPC (too much work for watching a movie) are using it all the time and asking me to rip more DVDs.

I use MakeMKV for the rips, and it works fine.
3749
Looks like silverstone.  For a build, I can definitely recommend them.  But from a perspective of HTPC as standalone devices, yeah... they're going out in favor of devices that have that sort of functionality built into the firmware.  So I've moved to having a WD TV.  Haven't regretted giving up the HTPC.
