Brothersoft is offering more than 200.000 files, mostly "Free Mobile Software & Games - Download Mobile Applications Free". You will have to search very very hard to ever find the two (2) files that Norton classified as keyloggers. Measured in risk percentage, Brothersoft is safe! Of course I cannot and will not promise that Brothersoft is all safe, but I believe they are trying to become/stay clean. The company is worth half a billion $, with 1 million visitors per day, and have 542.490 external links! And.. ehh.. >"It has been listed as containing 43 pieces of malicious software."<, just how old are those Wikipedia informations? Of course the two (2) files most likely were bad, and shame on Brothersoft for not finding and blocking them. But you are aware that several programs from DonationCoder have been classified as malware, right? Honestly: two (2) out of more than 200.000? It is such a microscopic percentage that it makes me think the Wikipedia article is over-exaggerating in an untrustworthy way, if you know what I mean.

2 out of 200.000 http://safeweb.norto...name=brothersoft.com

Edited:
WOT is hard to trust. People can say whatever they want without proving anything.

General Software Discussion / Re: teracopy: copy your files faster
« Last post by Curt on November 15, 2010, 02:30 PM »
FastCopy 2.06 is ready

FastCopy is the Fastest Copy/Delete Software on Windows. It can copy/delete unicode and over MAX_PATH(260byte) pathname files.

Automatically, after whether the copy origin and copy destinations are HDD according to same physical HDD or is judged, it operates as follows.

Diff HDD: Reading and writing are done with the MultiThreading in parallel.

Same HDD: Using big buffer, reading until the buffer becomes full, and writing in bulk.
Because Read/Write doesn´t use the cache of OS at all, other processes (application) do not become heavy easily.

Read/Write performance is a near the limit of the device. Include/Exclude Filter (UNIX Wildcard style) can be specified.

It operates lightly because MFC is not used, and it makes it only from Win32 API.

Because all source codes have been opened to the public in the BSD license, you can modify this software.

http://ipmsg.org/tools/fastcopy.html.en

Version history:

v2.01   Fix not to finish "move" in same HDD rarely. Restore not to require absolute path.

General Software Discussion / Re: remove objects from photos

CPSSoftware has the $15 Instant Wire Cleaner, made just for removing wires. Most of the wires in a picture are automatically highlighted with red. Paired with Easy Selection Tool – specially designed to select dark linear objects like wires with only a few clicks - this is a very easy way to do the job.

They also have InstantMask Pro, which I use for larger objects.

I and several others have had problems with Soluto not working at all. Maybe I've found an explanation to this. It *seems* (to me) that Soluto has to be in contact with the company's server during PC start. They wrote the following, in August:

Our current version has several known bugs. Most issues boil down to one single problem, namely, Soluto simply not being able to run on the user’s PC. Some of the issues have to do with the amount of users running Soluto, and as more users join-in – existing users may suffer.

The best interest of our users must always out-weigh the quantity of downloads. So:

We’ve been working on a version that resolves most of our scaling issues. It’s taking us longer than we’d like because we’re constantly context-switching between: 1) fixing actual specific scale problems on our servers and; 2) writing the new version.

The same company also has a very fine $30 screen capture program, CrossGL SnapDraw 3 which is *almost* a competitor to Snagit !! I won't use it every day, because FastStone Capture is simply too fast not to use for simple jobs. But for the advanced jobs, SnapDraw is really fine and really advanced. The SnapDraw Annotation Tools Library with 326 extra tools is almost awesome!

Unfortunately the 30 day trial is bugging the user to purchase now.

General Software Discussion / Re: a programs last used date in xp
« Last post by Curt on November 13, 2010, 05:06 PM »
I cannot remember right now any program with this feature.

The following tip fetches the info from XP's Start Menu shortcuts (not the Desktop shortcuts):

Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general (More info?)

I just noticed that the Last Used Date shown for programs in the Add/Remove list does not always agree with what I know to be the case.
-question
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general (More info?)

The "Last Used" info is made of a guess work. See what Raymond Chen [MSFT] states:

In order to get the "Last Used" and "Frequency" values, Add/Remove Programs needs to know the name of the EXE so it can ask the Start menu "Hey, how often did the user run this program, and when was the last time it happened?"

Notice that there are no clues in the registration above as to the identity of this EXE file.

So Add/Remove Programs starts guessing. It goes through all the programs on your Start menu and compares their names with the display name of the uninstallable item. It looks for Start menu items which share at least two words with the words in the DisplayName.
-Chen
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general

..., you can force an update by deleting this registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AppManagement\ARPCache

General registry editing warning applies. Be sure to have valid backups before deleting the key.

"always up to date", yes, many sites are using such tactics in order to save on traffic. It WILL eventually tell you about the new version, but it will wait for quite some time.

And Thank You, yes, my problem was solved; they gave me a new license key.

About having problems when removing Nitro: Normally there are no leftovers worth mentioning; the problem usually comes from Word and other products with a Nitro addon. Nitro's uninstaller really should tell the user about this.

.. Nitro will not update itself through it's own update command.

Mine would, so I guess you may have a collision with your anti-malware settings?

So, I have a Nitro account page? Okaaay... I will have to go and look for it!  :-[

Maybe I owe to some readers to tell that Nitro is charging for support. One will have to search their forum for answers.

General Software Discussion / Nitro updating is too clever for me
« Last post by Curt on November 12, 2010, 08:02 AM »
Sometimes I get the feeling certain software authors don't use their own programs!

Example:

1) Feature: auto-updating
2) Updating file is downloaded to hidden temporary system folder
3) Program must be removed before updating!
> =
How the x-rated am I supposed to update?

The present sinner is Nitro:

PDF2010-11-10_2016.gif

PDF2010-11-10_201712.gif

PDF2010-11-10_201740.gif

Such updating procedure is too clever for me!
-so now I am running a (updated) Nitro without the OCR that I've paid so much for!

General Software Discussion / Re: Filter directory tree by file type?
« Last post by Curt on November 12, 2010, 07:35 AM »
Is there any program that can take a file type and return a list of directories that contain files of that type?

Except for all the special programs already mentioned, I will like to remind you that Explorer does this per default. Just type .TheFiletype in Explorer's search box, when you are in a top directory, and the result will include all relevant files in every sub-folder in that directory. The speed of the result depends on whether you have indexing turned on or off.

Living Room / Re: The conflict of interest that is Google
« Last post by Curt on November 12, 2010, 07:08 AM »
Hmm... I don't care too much how it all works. I mean, $20 billion from advertising, is how it works... they're not going to change anything unless they'll make at least the same profit.

What is frustrating me the most is, the limited number of search results (and a consequence of this limit). I can become so infuriated when I first read something like "1.234.567 results", but then they NEVER show you more than approx 1.000 results. And the page I was looking for, was not part of these 1.000 because the subject was just a little too popular for my not-quite-so-popular site to be among the listed results.

This is the exact same path that has been taken by YouTube and so many others. You cannot search for whatever you like, unless you 1) already have visited the wanted page / file before so you maybe can remember what terms to use to narrow the search, or 2) will settle with what answer is already the most popular.

Catch 22, I think.

One consequence is  that too often we can only know what is popular
-and that is an extremely dangerous path for the future!
