I love Ultraviolet, at least when included with Blu-ray combo packs. This means I get a Blu-ray copy for myself, a DVD copy to give to someone I like, and an Ultraviolet code to give to someone I secretly loathe. It looks like I'm giving them a gift, but they have to deal with Ultraviolet digital copies. I will never use an Ultraviolet code myself.

Personally, the only reason I use it is because my TV and blu-ray player support it.  I'd never install that PoC on my computer...

My mom will often give me the ultraviolet codes. Most of which are redeemable through VUDU, which is a pretty awful digital video platform (and the Android app is horrible). But somehow I got lucky and was able to redeem one of them on Google Play. I wish they all did that. Almost all of them have an iTunes option, so why not a Google Play option?

Came across this comment today:
as he and the outfit he is in theory tasked to oversee on behalf of licence fee payers are oilier than a Turkish Wrestler.
I just love the alliteration highlighted.

One question concerning this confusing conundrum: Where's the alleged alliteration at?

GOG has modified their plans regarding regional pricing in response to the large backlash:

Sounds like good news all around.

At first I thought the comment below was humorous sarcasm. But they lost me on the second paragraph. Now I'm not sure what that person's point was. . .

What happened to the GOG I once knew. For one magical week this was a great place to shop. I am never buying another item from GOG again until the unfair pricing model comes back.

To go back on one of your ideals what is stopping you from removing DLC, tomorrow. Then after you nix DLC, next up on the chopping block will be all the new games, and then chaos when you return back to the failed Good Old Games model.

I presume I will be able to view how the images or thumbs will look before I post?
I seem to remember something about not being able to actually see the attachments until after the post?
Though, I guess, that's what the Edit Button is for.

You are correct in that you cannot view the attachments until after they have been uploaded to the forum. And they don't get uploaded until you click the "Post" button. So, yes, use the Edit button if necessary.

Another quick tip is that if you edit a post within the first minute or two, it doesn't get marked as "Edited." So you have some leeway to quickly correct mistakes.

@Deo - do you mean DE as in "Debian Edition" or do you mean DE as "desktop environment" as in a distro that will let you boot into several windows managers?

I meant desktop environment. Sorry. I tried to avoid ambiguity by spelling it out the first time I said it before abbreviating it to DE when referring to "desktop environment" later in the post. I had also hoped that talking about the differences between MATE and Cinnamon would clarify my intent.

If you reply to an email in your inbox, gmail sends that message to archive.  I hate that.  leave it in the inbox, i'll archive when I'm good and ready.  Anyone have a solution for this?
I found it!  There's an option in the general settings for gmail for hiding the "send and archive" button.  Silly gmail.

So instead of just having three simple buttons which would be "intimidating", we have one button...but with a long press option.  Really?  Is that really that much easier.  end rant.

I never had a problem noticing/knowing the difference between the Send & Archive button and just the plain old vanilla Send button. They're right next to each other. It's not that hard to look before you click.

Is there some sort of Linux desktop environment emulator or easy switcher thingy that will allow someone to easily swap DEs and play around with them and see which one they like the best?

Looking at the screenshots of LMDE Cinnamon compared to LMDE MATE, the only real difference I see is in the color scheme of the bar at the bottom of the screen.

It would be nice to be able to play around with them without having to download multiple copies of the 1+ GiB ISO.

Thank you, Deozaan, for the walkthrough.    I screen-capped all of it.  Many thanks.

Maybe you have a similar in-depth walkthrough for static images as well?   :tellme:  I have a few I'd like to share, in other threads, not here.

You're welcome. (c:

For images, it's best to attach/upload them to the forum. That way they don't disappear if the external site they're hosted on goes away.

Attach it to the forum and then click the "Link Inline Image.." dropdown and select your option. I typically use only two of the options:

1. "inline fullsize attachment" -- Use this if the image is relatively small, or if it's important to view at fullsize.
2. "inline thumb attachment" -- This makes a small thumbnail image that people can click to view fullsize. Use this for large images or for many images so that the images don't take up the whole screen and require a lot of scrolling for other people. It also saves bandwidth on large (filesize) since people will only download the full file if they click on the image to view it fullsize.

(See this post in the LOLMouser thread for an example. I only posted one image in that post, so I did it at fullsize. In the following post, I posted many images as thumbnails so that they wouldn't take up a lot of space.)

Each one will give you a tag that looks something like this

[ attachimg=# ] <-- Fullsize attachment
[ attachthumb=# ] <-- Thumbnail attachment

You can just leave it like that and it will automatically show the images in their attached order, or you can manually replace the # with an actual digit to show the images in a specific order.

Click here if you absolutely must display an externally hosted image
If you must display an image that is hosted externally, simply put the link to the image between [ img ] and [ /img ] tags (again, without spaces).

It is very strongly recommended that you don't do this! But an example is:

The following code:

[ img ]http://blasteroids.deozaan.com/itchio.png[ /img ]

Shows:

Finally, probably the most useful tip I can give you is that if you see somebody do something and you want to know how to do it, simply click the "Quote" link to make a new post and quote them. Their post will show up in the edit box and you can see the code they used to make things show up a certain way. That's how I learn nifty tricks I see on here.

P.S. Quoting somebody doesn't actually quote stuff in spoiler boxes, so if you try to quote my external image stuff to see how I did it, that won't work. I did it that way on purpose to discourage people from linking external images.

Actually, it should be nice for Australians, since $100 AUD is something like $90 USD. So I'm not sure why they're complaining.

If publishers charge $60 USD and $60 AUD then the Australians are getting the better deal.

It's easy:

You take a normal YouTube link:

http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=OfCl0i-16aA

and keep only the v= stuff and put it in youtube brackets like this (without the spaces)

[ youtube ] OfCl0i-16aA [/ youtube ]

resulting in:

You can even put the entire link in the brackets:

This:

[ youtube ]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfCl0i-16aA[ /youtube ]

results in this:

Both videos were excellent. I loved the self-referential humor in GoG's response.

"Now is not the time to be a grammar Nazi!" :P

Beautiful!

I don't understand why they're suddenly changing the flat pricing of the older games to regional pricing. Even if the rates are approximately equal now doesn't mean they will be in the future.

IMO they should do regional pricing on the newer releases if necessary, with the goal of eventually getting all titles (as they age) to the flat pricing that is the same for everyone regardless of location.

Seems backwards to give in to the "evil" of regional pricing on older games just because it was a "necessary evil" for the newer games.

Sometimes, when I click on something I get a double click and when I drag/drop an object, the operation fails as if I had unpressed the LMB before destination.  If I press a little harder, the problem goes away, so it is the mouse (LMB), but it's a high end model (Alienware/Logitech) and I would prefer to repair it than change it.

I literally just fixed this in my mouse this past week. The problem is as Vurbal said. It's in the micro-switch. There's a very thin strip of metal that is bent in such a way that when you press down on the mouse button, it clicks down. Over time, it gets a bit bent out of shape and the click isn't as reliable, resulting in double clicks or clicks canceling even though you're still holding the button down.

You can try to fix it by opening up the switch and bending that little metal strip. Or you can just buy a new switch and either open it up and replace the little strip or replace the entire strip with some soldering.

I did it both ways. I have two Logitech M570 mice that both exhibited this click misbehavior. One started almost immediately after I bought it (as a replacement for a previous Logitech mouse with the same behavior!) so Logitech sent me a new one for free and didn't ask me to return the defective one. That was a couple of years ago. Lately the replacement started to have the same problem, so instead of buying a brand new mouse for $60 (or whatever) I decided to repair it for $0.60. I bought some micro-switches, but didn't have any soldering gear, so I just swapped out the thin strip of metal and my mouse is working fine. Then I decided to repair the older mouse which was essentially brand new and unused since I bought it, but this time I bought a soldering iron and solder wick (also known as desoldering braid) and fully replaced the micro-switch on it. Now I have two mice that both work better than they did when they were brand new. (c:

You can find some micro-switches for pretty cheap here: OMRON D2FC-F7N

You can also search on eBay.

(Special thanks to Edvard for giving me most of this information in the IRC channel a couple of weeks ago)

I don't really even care if the GMail app has all the features I want or need because Android's sync model makes it a non-starter for me. Until getting my new tablet I hadn't used Android (or any mobile OS) for a couple years but I'm sure my old phone (running 2.2.2 or 2.2.3) gave me a lot more granular control over sync operations. On my Samsung tablet (running 4.2.2) the only options are to either sync everything related to my Google account or nothing. Naturally I choose nothing.

Sounds like something Samsung has customized the OS with. The "vanilla" Android experience offers you plenty of customization about what to sync or not. Here's a small sample of a few of the choices on my Android device (found in Settings -> Accounts -> Google):

2014-03-01 05.12.32.png

I'd only use vanilla Android or a custom ROM like CyanogenMod. All the other providers muck up the OS with awful customizations that ruin the experience.

Just go for HDMI cables. That will end all your problems as long as you remember to get the HDMI 2.0+ cables! :P

Living Room / Re: Against TED talks
« Last post by Deozaan on February 28, 2014, 03:42 AM »
I've had a nagging suspicion for a while now that TED talks were becoming more and more like video representations of snake oil shows or SCIgen papers, but I always felt I was alone in this regard.  All the cool kids were into TED, and the water cooler conversations always seemed to include the sentence "... so I heard this one thing in a TED talk...", so what was wrong with me?

Turns out, I'm not as alone as I thought.

Nathan Jurgenson at The New Inquiry (not one of my regular hangouts...) has written a pretty good summation of what I've been feeling all along.

TED attempts to present itself as fresh, cutting edge, and outside the box but often fails to deliver. It’s become the Urban Outfitters of the ideas world, finding “cool” concepts suitable for being packaged and sold to the masses, thereby extinguishing the “cool” in the process. Cutting-edge ideas not carrying the Apple-esque branding are difficult to find.

Am I the only one who noticed that that article was written two years ago?

Reisinger also did some personal soul-searching on the role of technology in the classroom, he says, and realized that many of the “fad” devices embraced by other schools didn't align with his educational goals for computing. (See his full rationale in his recent blog post on OpenSource.com.)

“It concerns me that we tend to chase the new silver tech bullet without thinking philosophically about what we want our students doing, or the freedom we want to give them with the device,” he said. “My fear is we're losing the art of computing. Then we lose a generation of engineers.”

Linux allows a level of exploration and control that other closed devices don't, he said. The cost savings in switching to all open source software is an added benefit. Reisinger estimates the district will save at least $360,000 in licensing fees on the high school's 1:1 laptop program alone.

I went to the library yesterday for the first time in a long time (first time visiting that particular library) and saw a few rows of iPads for the kids. I lamented out loud about how I felt sorry for the kids being raised on iPads, and how such a closed system that denied almost any kind of exploration or customization would keep them from learning the important things about computing devices. I think this Reisinger guy is right on the money. Libraries and schools are so often just after the latest technology that they often just pick what's cool rather than what would better enhance learning (or be more efficient uses of money!) such as Linux/Android.

This particular school did a few impressive things not only in deploying over 1,700 laptops to students in two days, but also in their choices and philosophy behind why they offered these things to their students.

Too busy dabbing with various Linux distros and now, with a Google Nexus 7!

You're installing Linux distros on your Nexus 7? O_o

Which ones?
Windows 7 and Nexus 7 are mine.
The Windblows 8 is my friends.
Sorry Microsoft but i just can't appreci8.

If that was a response to my above quote, I meant which Linux distros are you installing on your Nexus 7? But now I see I misunderstood what you wrote. You said you were busy dabbling with a Nexus 7. Not busy dabbling with putting various Linux distros ON a Nexus 7.

My mistake. (c:
