General Software Discussion / Re: Is Windows 10 a trojan?
« Last post by wraith808 on August 17, 2015, 09:58 AM »
The proper way to redistribute software internally - and the way any responsible administrator does it - is to download a redistributable to one system, check it, and then redistribute it.  Microsoft provides this capability for nearly everything you can get from their site. Just look for the IT and tech support versions.

There are enough PCs in my home, that its like a medium sized business.  But I'm not looking for IT overhead, even though I know how to do do such things, it's a headache.  So the more its built into existing infrastructure, the better it is for me.

I'd love an option to specify between "share downloaded update data between computers on my local network" and "share downloaded update data with the entire goddamn Internet". But I agree the option could/should have been in the installer, maybe even a time-based auto-selection (i.e. it defaults to "yes", but pops up on screen as a question for 30 seconds to a minute while other stuff is being done in the background, and if no answer is given it becomes yes, but you *can* choose no if you care to). With a time-based option they could avoid the problem of added complexity in choice in the installer to some degree.

Btw in this thread I'm really wishing for a "like" option for posts. :D

- Oshyan

That option does exist.

Yeah... i sent them an e-mail about it, and they said they knew... but not having a person or a direct way to communicate with google had proven very frustrating.  They are in the process of proving that it's a false result... but in the meantime, they're losing sales.

That may be true, but Delivery Optimization probably should be opt-in (like torrents are). For a corporate network, some sort of group policy should allow it to be easily configured.

Actually, most of the things Auerbach discussed should have been opt-in.

I haven't paid much attention to the Windows 10 release - is there anything compelling in Win 10 that might make me want to move off of Win7?

World of Warcraft is... using Bittorrent.  And it's not opt in.  Facebook and Twitter use bittorrent... and it's not opt-in.  There are a whole lot of other uses for bittorrent and p2p that are not opt-in that are in use all over.  And they're so not opt in, that there is no indication that it is being utilized.

Ironically, these same people also think torrents are the cats meow..

Personally I think it's a brilliant idea, because it allows updates to be downloaded from the fastest source possible...instead of forcing everyone to try ripping it fresh through the same tiny hole.

Exactly.  Is it the use?  Or is it who is using it?  It seems to be who is using it that is the largest objection.

  • Join.me (can't figure out how to disable launch on startup)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run -> join.me.launcher

Of course, whenever you use it, it adds it back :(

I don't run the software, but perhaps renaming the launcher (brute force) is the way to go ? (but then you'd still have to do it after every update)

Whenever you use it, it adds it back.

Isn't 9 EoL, or do you still get security updates for it?

Not sure. I've got 9.5.5 now. Haven't paid for any new versions. And I rarely download PDF files. I *always* check the source.

I have a strong aversion to Adobe- mostly because I have to develop for it, and doing that let's you know what kind of arsehats they are.

My solution to this has been Stardock's Fences. Neat little app worth looking up

+1

Find it at Stardock's Fences Site

Key Features

  • Create shaded areas to organize your desktop
  • Double click the desktop to hide or show icons
  • Define rules to organize your desktop icons
  • Swipe between multiple pages of fences
  • Create a desktop portal from any folder

FencesExample.png

The fences on the left are actual icons.  The Newly Installed fence puts anything I install into that fence by default.  The fences on the right are portals into folders I have set up (I do it that way because I use it for quick launch bar also).  It can do more complicated things... but that's good enough for me.

I bought in on the Humble Weekly Bundle: The Return of Space Boy

There were a lot of duplicates in there for me, so I'm putting them here.  You have to be a member of the DC steam group.  There are also some personal groups included in there to make the pool a little wider- but not much.

The giveaways run from today until 8/27/2015 (2 weeks)

Note: if it's just you - and only you - who will ever be accessing the server, you can also simply grant Full Control permission for the Everyone group across the board and be done with it.

O_O ... Ggaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!

I think something broke...

+1 with SJ, I've used the relevant key for swapping between architecture, (x86/x64), over the years for XP, 7, and 8 without any problem.

It'll fail if you try to install a product it doesn't match though, (eg. Pro key and you're installing Win HP).

You could also try backing up the activation tokens from the upgrade and restoring them into the clean install.

Although, ATM and Produkey come up with two different product keys for my Win10Pro netbook  :-\

I wonder if this points to the reason for that:

Windows 8.1 is * NOT * fully supported. All the activation data can be saved, but only those that were activated by * Phone * will be restored properly.

In other words, the Online activated backups can not be restored until now, * ONLY * if your OS is the Windows 8.1 – Other OS(es) are NOT affected ! We are working to discover why.

*** You can * NOT * restore the Windows 8 activation on Windows 8.1. Microsoft was made hard changes on the Windows 8.1 activation system, so we are unable to port the Windows 8 activation to Windows 8.1 without brick the system.

Remove everything is different than a clean install.  I currently have windows 7 ultimate 32-bit installed.  I want to install windows 10 64-bit.

There's no upgrade path.  I have to do a clean install.

No, I haven't.  I guess I should before I get to that step... Now I'm concerned.  I have my DVD ready to go... but I'm just apprehensive about trying the full install

So ofcourse Microsoft being Microsoft they are very vague about licensing which makes the whole thing somewhat unintuïtive.
This is what i figured out myself, and it works for doing a complete fresh install of Windows 10 and activating it if you are currently running Windows 7 or 8(.1).

1: First things first, make sure you have everything backed up and saved. Also write down your current key for Windows 7 or 8.1.

2: Then download this little tool https://www.microsof...e-download/windows10 . And use it to download an ISO for your version of Windows. Got Windows 8.1 Pro? Go with Windows 10 Pro. Got Windows 7 Home Premium? Go with Windows 10 home, etc..

3: Make a bootable USB stick with this: https://rufus.akeo.ie/ . Use GPT for partition table, and file system FAT32.

4: Then put the USB stick aside and install the Windows 10 upgrade through Windows update. The reason being that your old key won't work to activate Windows 10. But during the update process you automatically get a new key, a legitimate Windows 10 key.

5: Now once it's all installed use this tool: http://www.nirsoft.n...t_cd_key_viewer.html to find your new Windows 10 key. Make sure to write this down, so you can always find it.

6: Now with your new Windows 10 key you can install Windows 10 and activate it like you're used to. Boot from the USB stick, install Windows 10, install the drivers, activate and off you go.

I hope this is helpful for someone out there, because it took me a while to figure out as well since there are 0 tutorials explaining this right now at the time of writing.

And gets 84mpg.  If you check the blog, you will see that they were quite open about needing $25mil more in order to get the production run up and going, and were in the stages of securing that.  And they have in prospective interest, but there's a difference between that an offering, which they are currently in the early stages.

As far as the 'driver's spirit', I think it's made more for the commuter's spirit.  I'd love to go 2 weeks between gas ups, personally.

I suppose it's more of a CYA thing.

The backup camera has an obvious use for convenience/help with backing up the car.

The rest seem to be to have a record of potential traffic incidents, including a view of the driver if the car is stolen or if the driver is attacked or something.

* Deozaan shrugs.

Yes, I think you have the gist of it.

Stardock has launched Start10 for Windows 10. The $4.99 program is in beta, but the final version 1 is due the 12'th of August.

https://www.stardock...om/products/start10/
Features: https://www.stardock...start10/download.asp

I don't like how Stardock does business. They spew forth a ton of different programs and don't address bugs. The only time you see a new release is when they have a paid upgrade & it'll have its own set of bugs.

The only program I've seen them update with any frequency & with any commitment to fixing bugs is their WindowBlinds product. Do people even use that anymore?

Yes, they do, and yes, they fix bugs.  The fast track is to have the object desktop subscription.  It comes to the slow track when stable. And I never paid for an update to Multiplicity (the one I use the most) until they added the KVM features, and in the meantime got several different unpaid updates to address issues.

I've not had any problems with them in 10+ years of using their products, so I guess YMMV.
