I use both: Softmaker Office is much more compatible with MS Office. Libre Office's compatibility is so-so to poor in my experience. Softmaker's main weakness in comparision to Libre (again in my experience) is it's search - search steals focus, and doesnt allow you to edit, you've got to close it (search) to do anything - and then open it again to continue.

Once you've searched for something and closed the search, you can press F3 to search again without having to open the search dialog.

thanks for that tip Jibz, will try it out shortly

First interview with Tara the cat.. didn't have to wait long:
http://jezebel.com/h...s-her-fir-1576482599

first lol laugh was cause of your prediction (which I have to admit I didn't take that seriously earlier)
second was because kids and cats just dont perform quite as TV wants ("can you tell me 'I love Tara'?" - "Yeah" :p)

Jumping between an attacking dog and a small child might be unorthodox cat behavior, but barely tolerating the affections of doting humans is not. Cat celebs: they're just like regular cats.
should probably be changed to:

You can also try LibreOffice, which is free.

Softmaker forums are active, I'd highly recommend it if MS compatibility is important (disclaimer: I've absolutely no experience with PowerPoint/Presentations).

I guarantee that cat is going to be interviewed on some morning shows and when he is we'll get an update of him :)

lol, a worthy guest :) well done cat
reminded me of a phase I had a while back of watching Ceaser Milan videos, where he would go in and help people sort out their relationship with their (troublesome) dog - very impressive how he worked. Too late for that dog probably...

-ccfile doesnt trigger a capture, it simply copies the last capture to clipboard.

if you really want a commandline capture (and copy to clipboard, etc.), use MiniCap.

I'm happy with the first, will definitely have use for that, thanks to you both!

I'm a commandline noob - do I understand this correctly? ...

SC is e.g. set to save path to clipboard after capture.
I make another shortcut with, say "SC path" -ccfile.
If I start this second instance via FARR, the last screenshot will be copied to the clipboard.

if so, I'm still unsure of the details:
1) does it take a new screenshot and copy that to clipboard?
2) if so, is it full screen image then? or can I still e.g. capture selected area with this new instance?

Manual scrolling was fairly simple and very successful in FF - I used the default guess margins etc and they worked perfectly,

gallivanting

Awesome! My grandmother's favorite word to describe what her working daughters were doing Fridays after work instead of coming home for dinner! ;D

I still say that -with roughly the same usage as your granny. My mum used it a lot when we were growing up (Ireland). The kids today dont use it there, but I *think* they'd still understand it, mostly anyways.

PS nice little family story 40

Note: the license for that OEM copy of Windows that ships with a PC is not transferable and is legally for use only on the machine it originally shipped with. That's why it cost much less than the full retail version Microsoft would be happy to sell you. Not to say an OEM licensed copy of Windows can't be physically installed and validated on another machine. But it is a EULA violation to do do.
For the record - this is not fully true in Germany:
from an(y) ebay.de reseller of OEM Windows 7 -
-
roughly: the courts ruled that OEM versions may be sold without related hardware.

Most interesting! More on that here.

Glad to see the EU courts aren't falling for the arguments used in the US to abrogate a buyer's 'first sale' rights.

Not sure if that EU ruling has had a direct influence on Windows OEM resale** (anyone?) - the ruling I quoted was from the Federal German Supreme Court. I see Windows 7 OEM's for sale on UK Ebay and they oddly quote the ebay and MS policy/license limitations:

Please Ensure you read the below Policy and Legislation very carefully so you fully understand everything involved in the sale of this item.
If you have ANY questions whatsoever, then please message us through ebay and we will be happy to get back to you within 1 business day, or the next available business day where weekends/holidays are effective.
Ebay Policy States: OEM, bundled, or recovery software may be listed only if it is included along with the original hardware, such as the motherboard, hard drive, or computer sold with the OEM software.
Microsoft Policy States: "Large brand-name computer manufacturers, such as Dell and Compaq, often include OEM software on non-holographic “recovery” or “reinstallation” discs that show the manufacturer’s brand name. These software packages are typically marked with a phrase that states, for instance, “For Distribution with a new Dell PC only.” Recovery or reinstallation software is licensed only for distribution with new computers and can be redistributed only with the computer for which it was initially distributed. Distributing such software with individual PC hardware components (e.g. hard drive; RAM) does not comply with Microsoft’s OEM distribution requirements." In compliance with the above, we confirm that you will receive an original Microsoft Disc, and that the decommissioned PC is also included in this sale, however the Dell PC models vary and all are damaged beyond economic repair. Due to the size, weight and low value, PC's are only available by collection only. This item is also intended for use by OEM (original equipment manufacturers) and system builders. It is not intended for consumer use.

sounds like they're saying you're breaking the law if you buy this (nudge nudge wink wink :p)
** Presumably that EU ruling does give them the security to resell openly in the EU without fear of hassle or conviction.

Yeah, likewise, gute besserung Curt!

Tom, your screenshot is scary; thank you for hiding it!!!  :P
I can think of reasons, but I'm not sure why you find it scary :) multiple choice:
(a) desktop colour
(b) win8
(c) the working plan-drawing,
(d) simply seeing something of such antiquity on 8
or, none of the above?

Tbh, I only ever really use it on my Win7 desktop, but it works fine on the 8.1 laptop)

The guy is fantastic, I'm buying this live album for sure.

tbh I just 'discovered' him - I dont know do any of his albums have quite that sound. The live one I ordered is a different concert - that vid above was a one-off track with that band. He does seem to use a brass section a lot, but often play just himself + acoustic guitar. Check out his stuff on www.amazon.co.uk - they have previews for some (but not all) of his albums. (They only available as imports in the US.)

Living Room / Re: YouTube finally forces creation of google+ A/C to comment
« Last post by tomos on May 09, 2014, 03:30 PM »
Bugginess in the YT/G+ world lately. Dont know if they're making changes again or what.

  • Comments I make in YT not showing up on my G+ page.
  • Unable to find the name of the person I'm replying to (usually it shows automatically in the reply box, or gets suggested after you type '+' and the first few letters of the name). End result being I have no idea if they get notification of a reply to their comment.

Both pretty major bugs to me. Maybe my standards are too high, but one of the things that attracted me to g+ was the fact I could look back over my YT comments and thereby maybe find a video or maybe a user I replied to - or the uploader, or whatever.

They seem to do a push every once in a while to try and get me to use my real name: being forced again and again to chose between my real name and my YT one. Ironically they seem to hassle me less when my gmail account is open in same browser...
They also seem to have a sense of how far they can push - I was getting seriously pissed off with them last week - and there's been absolutely no problems that way since.

@tomos - Nice! Some older influences to be sure. And all the better for it I think. Refreshingly honest and real performance for a change. (No twerking dancers or other distractions either!)

Yeah, the only distraction was the big screen slide-show. That was there because it was a tribute concert (to the guy who was the founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival; I used always think that was somewhere in French speaking Canada - seems it's in French speaking Switzerland :-[)

I think it might be Superboyac's cup of tea as well. Looking forward to getting my live CD anyways :)

I'm just after buying a live album by this guy.

Paolo Nutini - Coming Up Easy - Montreux

he's especially good live imo - very passionate singer, great voice.
I love the music he writes/play - lots of older influences but still new.

EDIT: Also, whatever you do, make sure you add a keyboard shortcut to toggle flat-view (Command: Set FLATVIEW=MixedNoFolders,Toggle)! So useful!

thanks for that tip
Set FLATVIEW=Toggle used to show the mixed flat-view with folders, now (v.11) it shows grouped (like a tree view).

Almost all of my favourite programs from the past have been abandoned, so I guess my favourites of the present also may be abandoned some time in the future - so what if I like (FastStone Capture) this (Pale Moon) or that (jetAudio was updated!!) program (Dynamic-Photo HDR 5)? Tomorrow will be a different story.
Wow, Curt.  Sounds like you've had a bad day/week/month.  :(  Yes, it's true that nothing lasts for ever, but that's no reason not to enjoy programs while they're useful and no reason not to be interested in what other people like.  And for that matter, I've continued to find some programs very useful for a decade or more.  HyperSnap and I go back 17 years; there almost never a day that I'm at my computer without using it.  Mulberry is still my primary email client after 14 years of use (in spite of my trying unsuccessfully to find a more modern replacement).  UltraEdit has been my default text editor for about the same amount of time.  Someone turned me on to ActiveWords ten years ago, and I still use it every day.  Carpe diem program.  :)

cyberdiva, that inspired me to comment on my (still) most used work tool - Freehand 9.
I even have it running under Windows 8.1 (14 years after release/purchase) - it doesnt like my trackpad (I dont either, but it works okay with a mouse), no compatability business required:

screenshot of 8.1 use
Screenshot - 2014-05-08 , 00_41_00.png

[FWIW I have a copy of Illustrator, but, apart from it's slowness, I'm just too set in my ways to change that easily ;)]

« Last post by tomos on May 07, 2014, 01:35 PM »
^lol

I started having the same problems with FF 29 as I used to with Pale Moon and Waterfox, i.e. occasionally not being able to complete some purchase transactions within certain e-commerce sites. It would come to clicking the button "pay", and nothing happens, which is hugely frustrating, especially when you're trying to book flights and risk losing a particular fare that is selling out.

I had problems, on a few occasions, a couple of months ago (with Ryanair), but I presumed it was the site/payment system - rather than the browser :-\
Be interesting to see if it continues okay for you with Chrome.

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox with multiple rows of tabs!?
« Last post by tomos on May 07, 2014, 04:16 AM »
I'd recommend going through all the tab mix plus options to see what's possible

I did briefly, but nothing jumped out at me. It does a lot of stuff like duplicate tab rename, freeze, reload, etc, but I didn't see what I'd think would have been a numerical setting like tabs/row.

oh, I should have been more specific - the option was shown under the cursor in my screenshot above. On another note I'm now happily using it on Pale Moon as well
