General Software Discussion / new Site for my Software
« Last post by MilesAhead on November 07, 2013, 09:40 AM »
Most programs that were available for download from FavesSoft.com are now hosted on:
Miles Ahead Software

If you cannot find it there it may still be on Softpedia.com

This new site is still being modified.  But there are about 50 utilities available for download.

I have just gotten a Laptop running Windows 8.  Eventually I'll check out my programs to make sure they work ok under 8. I still have to update About information and Visit Hotkey Page, as well as Readme files with the new url.  Also the dead links on Softpedia have been fixed by the techs there.

Glass on W8 can be downloaded here

I'm using it now.  Totally clear window borders and taskbar(for those of us who do Desktop mode.)

2 Provisos..  you have to disable secure boot .. and on each boot a dialog comes up asking for a donation.  It's a nag screen that's turned off by donating.  I'm hot sure how to back off unless there's a control program.  I assume running a restore point will do the trick.

Living Room / Free Podcast of Series Game 6?
« Last post by MilesAhead on October 31, 2013, 03:12 PM »
Anyone know where to download a Free Podcast of Series Game 6?  Unbelievable as it may seem, anytime The Heat had a game, even a pre-season game, the World Series was not on the radio in Miami.  At least not on any station I could get on my Sony hand held transistor radio.

They finally clinch a series at Fenway and I don't even get to hear the play by play.

I just got a Laptop with W8 on it.  I'm pleasantly surprised.  Of course I disabled indexing and put latest Everything Search on it.  But out of the box it was much more usable than Vista before the first SP.  I really miss the Glass though.  But on the Laptop monitor it's tough enough just to read text on some sites(Color Toggle FF AddOn gets me over that hurdle.)  I have to wonder how Glass would look.  The Control Panel is still accessible.  So once there most confusion is eliminated.

It seems to be stable.  Although I haven't taxed the Laptop.  My days of converting video are over.  Too much work.  :)

Edit: as for "tips" Brink keeps the Tutorials section of W8 Forums loaded with tons of howto stuff.  Like how to switch from Microsoft Online login style to local login etc..

Thanks for the suggestions.  :)

but you could try NoSquint:
I've been using it for a while now to reduce glary webpages, including DCF, after someone in DCF pointed it out.
 (see attachment in previous post)

Thanks.  I'll try it.  :)

Color toggle maybe? (I don't use that one myself)

For hard to read pages I use No Color.

:)  I was just coming back to report I found Color Toggle.  :)

I set up my color scheme with "allow pages" unchecked .. and the alternate scheme I left at default/don't care with "allow pages" checked.  So it amounts to toggling "allow pages" setting with a hotkey.  At least it's a start.

Are there any good alternatives? perhaps something like Shadow Defender?

It's my impression that the "rollback" type utilities give you greater protection against yourself than really nasty malware.  Afaik they depend on reverting to a known system state on boot.  But a really nasty malware may hose the boot mechanism entirely.  I'm not sure how W8 secure boot figures into it.  I just got a machine with W8 and I haven't read up on secure boot details.  Supposedly it's more resistant to rootkits is all I've heard.

... seems slightly harsh.

-"slightly harsh"? Suicidal, I would say!

Even prior to this it switched to a mechanism that called home.  It gave the author the ability to kill your license at will. At any rate I stayed with the last "self contained" license key version. I just didn't like the idea.  I got out of the habit of using it after a while.

Stylish perhaps is your answer... :)

Note: Not affliated with that addon just a user of it.

Thanks for the suggestion. I dabbled with it. But trying to edit each site is too time intensive(assuming no ready-made themes produce legible text.)  I think the real answer would be in the Firefox settings.  In the color picker there should be a special choice called "pass through" to leave that color alone.  That way changes could be enforced in one or two categories.  A lot simpler for the user.  Although it's probably more difficult to program.
3638
I wonder if anyone knows an AddOn or setting that would allow the web site's images, backgrounds and colors to come through, but also allow text and link colors to be overridden?  The built in FF settings allow me to choose text, non-visited, and visited link colors. But they won't be used if "Allow sites to use their own colors" is checked.

What I'm running into is nice themes on forums but the text is hard to read.  If I could only override the text colors I'd be golden.

Primer
 (see attachment in previous post)

Rated:

I cannot agree more, Primer is a fantastic movie.

It's one of my favorites.  It seems like I have to watch it again every six months.  Then again, maybe I only watched it once but get sent back twice a year.  :)

it makes me think like I'm being selfish by not sharing the source
I know  how you feel exactly.  I was a mechanic and neighbors would ocassionally ask me to help them out with their cars.  Having an older brother  in the same business, I took his advice.  I would stand and watch as they did the work.  I'd offer advice.  But if something went wrong, well they did it!!  If I touched the car then the temptation is to make me fix everything even if unrelated aftwards.  The old "it was fine  until you touched it!" routine.  Nobody is so picky as someone getting something for nothing sometimes. It's unfortunate, but it can bring out the worst in some people.

I've encountered some of the same thing about providing source code.  For a small ahk hack I wrote myself it's one thing.  But if it's C# as example, I may have used free components or controls dropped on a form and it's just not practical to try to distribute someone elses controls or components.  Also it's not always in my memory where I got every one of them. It might take longer to trace all the stuff I dropped on the form than to do the dropping.

But I wish they would pass a "plain language in licensing" law like the plain language insurance law they passed in Massachusetts in the 70s or sometime thereabouts.  I mean, it's absurd when it would cost $500 in lawyer fees to get an interpretation of license language for $10 software.  Like, can I use it or not?  Can I sell a program written using this control, function, component etc.. or not??  There's no practical way to know other than being sued.

The "intact upgrade" approach is detailed in this thread

Assuming you make a backup image so that you can get back to square one if need be, another alternative is to get an ISO image of W7 and do a clean install with no product key.  It should allow you to evaluate Windows Seven on the machine for 90 days.  If you use this technique be sure to impress upon the owner of the machine that they should not commence an activation when prompted.  Unless of course they have decided all is well and they wish to purchase a license etc..

90 days should be plenty of time to decide if Windows Seven is nice to use.  If the owner turns out not to be thrilled, the system image of XP can always be restored.

edit:  The sojourn from XP to Vista to W7 I only found by search.  But sevenforums is a good site with knowledgeable posters.  I should note that the "Custom Install" which leaves a lot of the old OS stuff still does gather up programs installed in Program Files and the registy entries etc.. and wraps them in Windows.old folder.  So it's not like you can just keep using installed apps.  But data is ok.  Stuff that doesn't need install, like AHK programs etc.. that I put on my machine in C:\Utils, well they came through the custom install I did from Vista to W7 and I could use them just by making a new shortcut.

On the 90 day evaluation... install with no product key.. many people get paranoid and think it is some kind of a hack. Not at all. It's totally legal.  In fact sevenforums and vistaforums are both loaded with Microsoft MVPs and very paranoid about any license infringing info such as booting another OS to overwrite Admin passwords etc...  They won't post it if they think it's questionable. Even on sevenforums there's a tutorial to "rearm" the 90 day evaluation to get 30 more days.  The OS is fully operational during the evaluation.  No hamstrung demo crapola.   Just so you know.  :)

Seems to be some good deals on some of the "Postcards" series of jazz CDs.  I especially like Ralph Simon and Chip White

At less than $10 it's tough to go wrong.  And the sound quality on these are excellent.  I think I had 6 of the series.

General Software Discussion / Re: Online HTML index generator?

Oh, ok. I was going to set you up on some free space I have, with a free .tk domain name to point to it, like I did for Tom's site. A simple, free Wordpress theme appropriate for the purpose, fully secured, with automated offsite backups, too. And I would maintain it and keep Wordpress, theme, and any plugins updated for you.

You'd actually be doing me a favor. Don't think you'd be getting away with no strings attached, just because I said it's free.  :P

I'd want an honest testimonial for my site, in exchange for the work. That way when I start offering my services to the public, it doesn't look like I just started yesterday.  ;)

Maybe we could work something out in that case. I thought you were going to do it on donation coder space. The only reason I'd want to keep the domain name is so links such as in readme files would work. (I did a perhaps inadvisable  thing and put caps in the readme links such as "FavesSoft.com/Whatever.zip" to make it easy to see there were 2 's's in FavesSoft, because I had an .htaccess line that set the domain portion to lower case automagically.)  Also I'd be able to update pad files.  That would be cool.  :) Mouser can always just delete the page if we go ahead.  I'd only want to offer program utilities for download.  I can recycle the wallpapers.  None were particularly artistic anyway.  So total space used should be only a few MB.

@app  thanks for the offer. I talked to Mouser previously and he wants to do just a mirror.. no domain hosting.  He has already set aside the page

I think my domain registration craps out in December anyway. No real reason to keep it going.  "FavesSoft" was named after one application called "faves" that actually sucked anyway.  :) I more or less wanted to put up a site with a product just to see what all was involved. I leanred a few things.  One being not to bother paying LLC fees unless somebody is paying me fees.  :)

These machines are really locked down.  I mean, it wouldn't even let me run Firefox Portable off a USB.

But the program App suggested does look a bit more versatile than the simple link generators I've used before. I intend to make a super simple page.  Just a heading like Programs by MilesAhead and links, with maybe a one-liner description of each.  That's it.  One size fits all. :)
