Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Blackbox for windows - shell replacement

not entirely sure what i think about this yet http://www.flyakiteosx.com/

i've had it running an a virtual machine and it appears to work very well.

now, it looks very pretty (as mac os x does) but as i'm not into the 'silver' colour scheme i don't think i'll be using it seriously. what i thought was impressive was the ease of installation and the way it appears to have taken over the xp interface. if only it had been a 'dark' theme then i would use it on my 'real' machine (not just the virtual one).

i know stardock do mac os type things but the flyakite one is free and, so far, works really well.

admittedly, i've not tried uninstalling it - so maybe that's when things will appear less impressive, but for now it looks like everything has been perfectly produced.

probably completely unrelated but a friend of mine kept complaining about his laptop not playing things properly even though he knew the same files had worked in the past - the solution was to turn dma back on - somehow it had been disabled.

Screenshot Captor / Re: HELP: Screening an entire Web page
« Last post by nudone on January 07, 2006, 02:51 AM »
i think everyone would be more than happy, mouser, if you could just get it working with the common browsers. maybe that's a big task in itself, though.

i look forward to seeing this major break through in the capabilities of Screenshot Captor.

f0dder and tinyvillager, i had installed the trial version of windowblinds 5 - using the noire skin - it was almost the perfect 'look' for my new new 'black' machine. but, there were a few things i wanted to tweak - just so i could see the text better on some menus and there was a rather chubby border around the windows that wasn't really necessary.

i tried to edit the skin using 'skinstudio' but the 'noire' skin that it picked up appeared to be slightly different than the one i actually had running in front of me - strange. anyway, i didn't edit the skin and it just made me wonder - if i upgraded to the full windowblinds would i then find myself with other version of 'noire' - the one that i actually don't like (it's less pollished).

this, along with your comments about many people complaining, just made me think that i was destined to become another unhappy customer.

i'll give it some thought and then maybe just take the gamble and buy it - looks to me like it's a 50:50 chance of winning.

interesting to read that about stardock, tinyvillager. i was on the verge of getting windowblinds - just to brighten things up a bit, but i'll definitely not bother now.

a little request if that's okay...

with the new launch bar, is it possible for it to also list which programs are currently running - like the taskbar - or is that not really what a launch bar should be for?

i just ask as i find that most of the time the windows taskbar is fine but when i'm running full screen programs like photoshop (in full screen mode) i lose the taskbar. no big problem of course i can use 'alt+tab' or the 'win' key to flick over to other running programs or get to the taskbar.

but you know what a lazy swine i can be - sometimes using the other hand is just too much for me - i'd love to be able to just hit the edge of the screen (or a corner) with the cursor and see a list of other programs that are running and then just click the one i want to bring forward.

i'm sure there must be something that does this already (i'm almost sure that i must have tried such a program in the past but i can't remember what they were) but if there isn't then i'm just asking if such a method could be included into the new launch bar?

Living Room / Re: sticking two routers together?

just thought i'd mention that since the firmware update for the netgear router everything appears to be working fine (thanks f0dder for prompting me to do something i should have tried months ago).

not really put the router under much stress at the moment (just one pc plugged into it) but it's stayed connected to my isp for several hours, which it certainly wouldn't do before.

well, i guess i shouldn't but i'll hang on until i hear news of a 20% discount. i'll install the trial version for now.

i've probably asked this before (or it has probably been asked on the forum before by someone else) but what advantage would i have of using admuncher over using the built in 'blockers' that come as part of browsers like firefox or maxthon.

i currently use maxthon but i feel like i'm missing out on something as everyone appears to be raving about admuncher. is admuncher more intelligent, such as in the above case of spotting ad and non ad flash content. if that's the case, then i probably could find a use for it...

a fantastic improvement.

that would be fine, Carol, but it's not really an improvement on what i've got. if the netgear does decide to work after the firmware update then i'll just stick with that for a while.

mimo and gigabit can wait.

the story goes like this...

the netgear is an adsl wifi router (with 4 ports), it worked fine for about 12 months (after a few teething problems when i first got it - random disconnections).

after the 12 months of perfect use the netgear decided to start disconnecting itself from my isp - it would stay connected for about 10 minutes, sometime even an hour - it would immediately reconnect, but it was annoying - messenger having to reconnect, large downloads upset, file sharing queues upset.

as i couldn't see any logical explanation for this behaviour (not that that really matters with computers) i 'decided' that the netgear router had become too ill for me to use any more. my isp settings hadn't changed and i'd not changed anything on my computer either, so i couldn't see any good reason why it shouldn't work.

on plugging my cheap no brand name non wifi adsl router into all the right connections i found that everything worked fine - no disconnections to my isp at all no matter how long i leave this old router switched on.

now the problem is, this cheapo router works fine but has no wifi. the netgear router that has a mind of its own has wifi but is too unreliable to use as the main device.

solutions: buy a new adsl wifi router or link the two routers i've got at the moment and get the wifi working again plus a few extra ports, well an extra 2 ports.

i could do with the extra ports but i've lived with 4 quite happily so more of them is just a bonus really. i could buy a new adsl wifi router but this netgear one didn't impress me that much - i've found that i only use the wireless once in a blue moon anyway.

i'd probably get one of the new mimo wifi routers in a few months when i can't hold out any longer - just so i can play around with it. hopefully someone can recommend a brand that works reliably.

idealy, i'll like a gigabit router that has adsl and wifi but i've yet to see one (any suggestions) so it looks like i would have to mix and match a few devices anyway to get what i want - i think it's a bit poor what's on offer at the moment. just a simple mimo wifi adsl gigabit router would be the right tool for the job.

as for the firmware update - just downloaded it and will do it in a few minutes but i'll be amazed if it works - i really don't have much faith in this netgear jobbo.

would this integrate well with the hosting mouser has provided here?

i wouldn't be interested in it if it's just the domain forwarding thing (or whatever it's called) but if it were the 'proper' thing i'd go for it.

(sorry about the incorrect terminology - my brain is stuck in 'far cry' island mode, so i'm still trying to dodge imaginary bullets.)

hmm, thanks mouser, thanks Carol.

never even thought of bridging them. i'll just stick them together and if it doesn't work first time then i'll start reading into it.

Living Room / sticking two routers together?
« Last post by nudone on January 01, 2006, 07:47 AM »
i was using a netgear adsl router up until a couple of months ago. i had to give up on it as it decided that it liked to disconnect itself from my isp every hour or so (it was working perfectly for about a year).

i'm almost ready to throw it in the bin as nothing i do to it makes it stay connected but before i do, i'm wondering...

can i connect this netgear router to my other cheapo adsl router?

the netgear one has wireless on it whereas the cheapo one doesn't - i'm hoping i can join the two via a cable (do i need to use a crossover?) and thereby get a bit of wireless action going again - even if it's just for an hour, until the netgear decides to start sulking and disconnect itself again.

i ask this as i'm hoping it's a standard thing to do (???), you know, connecting routers together (???). i'd experiment but the routers packaged away under loads of junk so i'd prefer not to fish it out if i'm on to a loser right from the start.

opinions, please...

er, sorry, i said above "nice find there brotherS" in response to 'alphaclock' but i've just realised i should have been thanking LuckMan212. sorry about that.

looks like mouser has been taking the same medication as me as he also referred to me instead of LuckMan212.

bizarre.

well, i have to say that i didn't know that, Carol.

i guess i would have discovered it eventually but i've been trying to get comments for folders - the properties method doesn't appear to work that way.

whilst i was quickly testing this file comment method i noticed that i couldn't apply it to video (.avi) files.

thanks for pointing it out, Carol. i'd still like to know if there is a way of doing it for folders.

i think i've seen a similar project in Custom PC magazine - if i can find it i'll let you know.

edit:

just had a look in google - there appears to be quite a few sites talking about such projects.

« Last post by nudone on December 30, 2005, 11:57 AM »
again, pardon my ignorance.

i see there is a 'comments' column you can display whilst in details view when using windows explorer - er, like, how do i write a comment for a folder (or file)?

is it just for things like mp3 tags?

can i do something similar in Directory Opus?

(i have a feeling this has been talked about before.)
