Find And Run Robot / Re: FARR V3 Discussion

It's not sexy like new features but I'd like to see either a more complete help or the ability to search settings pages.  Some of the settings pages aren't that busy.  But a few have enough to fool the eye where I can look for certain settings and not see them... if you know what I mean.  :)

With form display I don't know if there's a way to do Control-f search through.

Thanks for the info.  :)

edit: I tried setting of 2 but it still loads the page when it first connects regardless of cache.  So I'm going with 0.  At least the back button is responsive.  Instead of spinning cursors I think Windows 9 needs to play a porno while you're waiting for pages to load.  Man!!  My 14.4 modem was faster than this over the phone!!!

I don't know if it's a Windows8 thing or what but it seems even if IE is the default browser, if another browser is open, a page launch will go to it instead. I have no idea how it's being launched as it's part of the WiFi click a hotspot "connect" button.  This is my first Laptop so it's all new ground.

I prefer to use BrowserBunch because if I switch to another browser all I have to do is add it to the row of buttons. Not configure yet another program.

One thing I did find is if you turn off FF addressbar url trim in about:config then you have to provide the full url on the command line.. with the http:// and the whole nine yards.  Otherwise the browser bunch text file read in can have just site.domainsuffix or 3w.site.domainsuffix etc..

Strange that it's so damn picky.  :)

Instead of messing with sessions I set up BrowserBunch to open with my 4 main tabs and set the browser to open a blank page.  Otherwise it will just come up frozen with the network here.

Maybe you would know... is there a method to launch a FF derived browser skipping session restore for this launch only?  I tried Shift click, alt click on the shortcut. It just comes up as always.  If I could bring it up blank then the page open would go to it instead of IE.  Opening with sessions it tries to connect before the WiFi is initialized causing the browser to just hang.

(I tried searching for the answer but all I get is how to set the session settings.. which does me no good as I want the session restore for WiFi that will connect with no manual intervention.)

I tried Pale Moon awhile back.  I think most of it is the staccato WiFi on/off/on/off/on/off

The thing I don't understand is why these browsers insist on connecting when using the back button when the page was loaded only a few seconds ago.  What's the Internet Cache for?  It's infuriating when you have to sit and wait just to go back one page when you know damn well the data is already there.

Seems they overreacted to complaints from people who had to hit F5 in older versions.  Now it loads no matter what settings are in effect it seems.

At least this WF is much better afa scrolling.

I'll take a look at default portable setting.  Thanks.  :)

Out of desperation I tried Waterfox Portable 18.01.  That helps somewhat.  Tough to tell with herky jerky WiFi.  Seems like all of them have been total crap lately.  I can't set portable browser as default so I set it to IE.  I only use that for WiFi login screens that need to launch via default browser.

This 18.01 is a lot snappier than 24.0 WF.  Still a bit sluggish coming up.  But no where near as bad as 24.0.

It's not The Godfather but I got a kick out of Killing Them Softly

It makes its point with a sledgehammer.  Penny ante Mafia guys killing each other over a few large while the big buys rip us off for trillions smooth as ice cream.

I don't who recommended fail-safe...but it was very good!

I haven't checked IMDB but I think it was the first big role for Larry Hagman as the interpreter.  Also it provided the basis for the Dr. Strangelove spoof.  I saw that in the theater but  was too young to get it.  I was pissed when all the bombs went off at the end.  I must have watched DSL a dozen times since though.  Just don't fight in the war room!  :)

Old flashes are at the root of evil ( )... Update Flash, and you will have less problems.

I have the newest release.  I'll double check it though.
Thanks.  :)

I don't remember it being this bad ever.  It's almost like the signals from the mouse are on hold.  It's tough to tell exactly what's what when the network hangs so often.  Kind of strange in itself because sometimes all the pages in my browser will be spinning cursors except that I download a 9 MB file and it's down as soon as I click it.  Really hard to figure.  :)

Firefox 25.x scrolling sucks.  This topic was discussed some time back with older versions. It suggested making a new topic since the old one was, er, old.  :)

I'm running FF portable 25.0 and as default browser..  Firefox installed 25.1.  After going through AddOns it seems on the Portable it was Tab Mix Plus that prevented me from scrolling.  On the installed it seems to be Download Status Bar.  Granted these might act normally on a snappy network.  But the WiFi at the library can really hang.  But for some reason killing and/or removing these AddOns seems to allow me to scroll the page at least.

The installed FF was so bad it would open to an empty page and still hang.  I couldn't even open a bookmark folder without waiting for who knows what.  Really weird.

I've been in Miami  since February

Is it still warm down there? Because it's downright cold in central FL right now (I hate winter).

During the day it tends to get above 70.  But lately there's been a lot of wind.  Thankfully not that much rain to go with it. I think I got one hour sleep last night total.  The wind didn't quit until around 4:30 AM.  Last Feb. there were a few days below freezing. I was hoping to get off the street before the really cold weather came back.  Usually what gives you a leg up is meeting somebody who will help out with small favors.  Let you leave your pack at their place at times, maybe take a shower there, use their address for driver's license etc..  I met a friend like that as she came out to walk dogs every day.  Things were going along pretty well but then her roommate decided to kick her out and she had to go to Jacksonville to live with her mom until she got work.

Anyway, sorry to turn your question into an excuse for a soap opera.  :)

edit: it's just frustrating because stuff that you can do in days or a couple of weeks, like straighten out your driver's license as example, if you have a permanent residence, can take months.  A lot of these guys who go through the alcohol or drug programs don't end up driving a car.  The social outfit buys them a bicycle!!  An uncertain percentage of these guys become purse snatchers on wheels.  You see them whizzing up and down the streets and sidewalks at 3:00 AM looking for people asleep with a backpack or shiny sneakers to swipe.  Once they're on the bike you can't catch 'em.  :)

edit2: I hate Winter too.  I went to LA with a friend when I was 19 or so.  He had family out there.  We stayed a couple of weeks.  I always wanted to get away from freezing temps of Boston to LA.  But I figured FL wasn't a bad second choice.  It has palm trees after all.  :)  The first 20 years weren't so bad.  :)

I was thinking "the key to my heart" and "the key to the city."  Of course there's Key Biscayne.  I've been in Miami  since February and I still haven't tried out Biscayne Beach.  Hey!! One way bus ride is $2.25 now!!  :)

You'll find the option to center the window (or not) in the "Display Options" tab.

Thanks. I must have looked there 3 times and not seen it.  :)

« Last post by MilesAhead on November 12, 2013, 08:40 PM »
Latest portable insists on centering search window.  I drag the window where I want.  Close it.  Hit Pause key.  It pops up center screen again.  I'm on a Laptop.  As an aside, I tried a few Start Button replacements for Windows8.  They all seem to have some side effect that makes the shell flaky.  So I'm thinking I might just use FARR to find programs and forget about the start button.

Living Room / Limitless

Another flick I enjoyed was Limitless

Unfortunately it's yet another example of a film with a great premise that degenerates into plot cliche.

The wrinkle I did like was
Spoiler
how the drug made the hero smart enough to guide a chemist to fix the undesirable side effects of the drug.  Sort of like bootstrapping.

@4wd thanks for the generous offer.  Skwire already set me up with FTP access.  What a world of difference! I uploaded my AutoHotkey Scripts folder, about 1,200 files after I deleted all the .exe files, to MEGA, a web based deal. It took hours on WiFi.  I just now uploaded the same folder over FTP to Skwire's server using FileZilla.  I watched them go on.  Maybe 3 or 4 minutes and done!

The page has a long way to go.  App is actually doing it. I've never used WordPress (as you could tell if you ever visited the FavesSoft site.  Just blocks of color done by hand in css and html.  The only "tool" I used was a navigation panel generator.)

There will be means of contact as well as donation buttons. From what App is telling me it will likely be possible to post bug reports etc..  She has a free hand as long as my software can be downloaded from there.

So if it looks good when done it will be due to App's work.  I just uploaded the zip files.  :)

This Mega seems like it would be OK if I could log in via FTP.  I like that it's manual.  But I don't know if it will give file info for syncing without using their sync app.  In case anyone is curious:
https://mega.co.nz/

Maybe I'll post a question on their support about direct ftp.  It seems they do have an ftp address... a good sign. :)

OTOH it has public key encryption so I dunno' if FreeCommander has any way to deal with that.

I'm trying MEGA. Supposedly 50 GB free storage.  But it seems to be Web interface only.  It's cumbersome if I can't use FreeCo9mmander smart syncing.  The WiFi here ain't the greatest.  Web upload totally hobbles FF Portable 25.0.

The stuff isn't sensitive.  I just want to store it so I can download it later.  :)

I just tried Google Drive.  Explorer drag and drop copy, not involving the GD folder, just on the same partition, was reduced to a crawl that hung for long periods, then crawled again.  I uninstalled GD and now it's back to normal.  I don't need all this auto-sync stuff.  FreeCommander sync is just fine.

Free FTP storage using my own FTP client??  Does it exist?  I don't want automatic sync.  I'd rather use FreeCommander as it has FTP client and folder sync features I already know how to use.  I just tried Google Drive but I think the folder change detection may be bringing Explorer to its knees.  (I have to remove GD and test to be sure.)  I copied a couple hundred files into a different folder on the same partition(not the GD folder) and it virtually hung Explorer.  I only need a few GB.  But the manual control is the important part.
