Find And Run Robot / Re: Feature Request v2 - time to get started
« Last post by mouser on August 29, 2005, 06:53 PM »
great suggestions.
i think that my plan for f&r commands is going to do what nontroppo and carol says, let me expain.

you will be able to make a command in f&r that says:
Match on regular expression: "wik (.*)"
and then list the following as results:

http://www.google.co...&oe=UTF-8&q=$$1
http://www.google.co...&oe=UTF-8&q=$$1
http://www.bbc.co.uk...p;go=homepage&q=$$1
http://www.bbc.co.uk...p;go=homepage&q=$$1

so you see the idea is when user types: "wik donationcoder"
then they will see in results box the 4 possible searchs:
http://www.google.co...&q=donationcoder
http://www.google.co...&q=donationcoder
http://www.bbc.co.uk...&q=donationcoder
http://www.bbc.co.uk...&q=donationcoder

its exactly like group aliases.  in fact now that i think about it, i think we can merge the group alias list and command list into one thing, which makes like even easier, ill just let user specify an optional regular expression mask for group aliases.

now, as per an early suggestion by carol we can be nicer about presenting results, and let results list include a "nice" display item.
so for eexample you would configure in the goup alias like this:
googleuk $$1 | http://www.google.co...&q=donationcoder
google $$1 | http://www.google.co...&q=donationcoder
search all bbc | http://www.bbc.co.uk...&q=donationcoder
search bbc news | http://www.bbc.co.uk...&q=donationcoder

now if user types: "wik donationcoder"
they will see in results list:
1. googleuk donationcoder
2. google donationcoder
3. search all bbc
4. search bbc news

and then of course pushing the number button would open the browser and run the search.

what do you guys thing - it seems to perfectly fit with f&r approach and seems like it would really work well.

Cheat Sheeter / Re: Any progress here?
« Last post by mouser on August 29, 2005, 10:33 AM »
Cheat Sheeter is about 90% done, but it's on the back burner for a bit mainly because i think its going to require some real assistance from me when it goes public to help round up people to write some help pages for it and tweak the style sheets and stuff, and i think that we should concentrate on getting the other apps all updated before releasing this new major tool.

hi gottadoit,

if you can figure out anything more about that access error i'd love to hear more, i've yet to see one and any clues would help.

good idea about basefilename, i will add it in next release.

im not sure im fully understanding what you are saying about the copy to clipboard interception of application name.. can you try to explain it a bit more?

i think the timer idea is a good once, and a smart mode to only capture when screen changes is a good idea, i just have to figure out if i can do it efficiently.

ok fair enought about right hand side of window, i will fix that so that the rightmost edge of window doesnt trigger zoom.

ill have to check out the problem with long file names - i will definitely add an autotruncate if thats a problem.  any more insight into this you can shed would be welcome.

Find And Run Robot / Re: F&R fans get an update
« Last post by mouser on August 29, 2005, 08:45 AM »
kfitting, yes good point - it's currently not at all keyboard friendly..
two possibilities - allow user to assign hot keys to them vs. ctrl+1 through ctrl+9 to be equiv to hitting buttons 1-9 ?
or else just say this is a non-keyboard thing aspect.

carol,
1) i am currently debating with myself whether to use an optional database snapshot.. i still have to think about it more.
2) i think maybe best solution would be in the aliases allow user to specify a more meaninful name, that is a reasonable compromise i think.
3) i can actually make it so user can decide easily whether to have tools on separate row from text edit, so that is a good idea.

help file hasn't been updated yet but it should launch when you select help, i'll fix that.

you can adjust the size of the area reserved for buttons, just drag the divider (perhaps ill try to autosize it in next versoin).

ok so the buttons...
you can put on the buttons documents or programs (you can also right click an entry to add it to toolbar buttons), or configure specific commands directly.

commands to launch as buttons can be simple standalone launches, OR can be configured to launch the currently selected file, by using the %file% parameter in the commandline.

so for example, you could add buttons for your text editor, hex editor, mp3 player, etc.
do a search select the file and then push the button to open it in the text editor.

--

as for drag and drop out.. there aren't too many cases where it would be useful, but let's say you had an ftp program, you could search for files and then drag them out of find and run robot into the ftp program to tranfer.  stuff like that.

Screenshot Captor / Request for 3rd party freeware tool configurations
« Last post by mouser on August 29, 2005, 06:20 AM »
I'm working on the new object drawing stuff for screenshot captor.. i think this is going to take screenshot captor to a whole new level.

I'd also really like to demonstrate the power of the 3rd party tool configuration system.
what i would love is some help finding freeware tools and configurations for them.

So far i have 2, color cop, a great color picker tool.
And the mini ftp upload tool by crono here on the forum.

Here is what i would love to add (preferably freeware)
tools and configurations for watermarking tools <-- this one especially
tools and configurations for steganography
more ftp tools.
an email tool.
picture frame tools.
special effects tools.
image optimization (ie png compression tool)

in case its not clear what im asking for, im asking for freeware programs that can be run from the commandline, plus the proper commandline configuration for using the tool from screenshotcaptor tool menu.

Finished Programs / Re: IDEA : monitor windows and resize (and reposition) them
« Last post by mouser on August 28, 2005, 05:39 PM »
winwarden looks great.

request (if it's easy to add) -  a command to center the active window on the current screen would be lovely.

to be more clear:
so the idea of winwarden, if i understand it, is that you can make a configuration file that says, whenever program XXX is started, put it here on screen, set it to ontop, change transparency, etc.  very useful.

it might be nice to allow you to hit a hotkey (or system tray menu) to change *active* window immediately without needing to edit config file.
for example a hotkey to center active window on screen would be cool i think.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Plugin idea
« Last post by mouser on August 28, 2005, 02:29 PM »
chs is going to get another round of work soon, first just to address the slowness and efficiency of it - which is clearly an issue as the database gets bigger. then i will begin in ernest implementing the quick paste and generic database functionality.  it's helpful to get a little distance from it in order to get a perspective on what works and doesnt.

i'm also cognizant of the fact that F&R and process tamer are the more popular apps on the site and has been waiting for some updates for a while, so i'm going to spend the next week or two upgrading F&R and doing some minor updates to the rest of the programs before i go back to major work on chs.

however i should say that i think using it as a removable media database would really be asking for trouble since there are so many truly excellent programs for this (whereisit as an example), and it's such a specialized task..

great - i'm glad it worked out.
seems like a good compromise, those who know what they want can quickly check releases page for any new updates.
others can browse the program pages and get lost :)

btw ive expanded the "other software" section more in anticipation of hosting the ocassional software from other authors that aren't quite suitable for their own major section.  System Path Commander is the first app on it:

its common to have to perform an operation on the hard disk to make windows "happy" with the new hard disk mbr.  it sounds like that is not your problem since when that happens winxp will just refuse to boot.  but thought i should mention it just in case.

third failure in 21 years is quite good.

i i will add the browse button, i will fix the button locations.

i will improve context menu thing.  i will *try* to make it a submenu, but i can't guaruntee it, just because of the steps involved in fetching it and displaying it.  at the least i think i can make it appear exactly where it should if it were a submenu.

im going to be adding more features in the next week - i'd like to start with the non-revolutionary features first and go from there, so i'd definitely be interested in hearing peoples favorite things they have been waiting for..

i will also try to add the ability to drag and drop from results out of f&r and into other programs now.
