Side stepping for a moment, what's the strategy behind a "company based in Nambia with a server in the US"? In the context of the US's content rules, vs the tax law ones, is some $4 of ad revenue a nice living in Nambia!?

Otherwise they'd have long since made the schools much more efficient at educating the next generation- because that knowledge bleeds through to their parents as well. Somewhere along the line the powers that be have realized that an uneducated mass is easier to control than an educated one, and have been quietly allowing education to fall into decline.

Of course this shows clearly on the internet, where as much as the intellectuals try to explain the situation there are just plain too many under-educated people out there for those of us that know to possibly make a difference in a reasonable timeframe.

I'll add a wrinkle from another direction: At the very bottom of the page is:

"Go Dark For IE © 2012"

So despite claiming to be "inspired by go dark to stop SOPA", they *copyrighted* their page! Not even Creative Commons!

Wow App! That will get a discussion rolling!

In a way I'd say that realtime is indeed a double edged choice. I am starting to wind down my heavy internet usage because I mostly got what I came for. (User-Generated eduction in many topics). By now I have a decent understanding of many important issues, both computer and constitutional, and roughly with some 5,000 posts to my "web brand" I have just about reached a plateau.

That's when it's about time to switch to the summaries or skimming, watching for what's really a surprise, vs what's "just more data".

It makes a killer desktop background! I use black anyway, so now I have a Cody-Clone for a week!

Pity that you don't plan on much, I can see this all the way as a mascot for Stop SOPA-ACTA-PIPA-..... bills, all the way up to an alternate universe where some combination of you/Mouser/A/B/C write code that you then cut a deal with a Chinese businessman, who then pummels the Linux market, and all the news outlet go:

"In latest news, CodyOS outsells iPad, Android, Windows 8 UI, on the tablet and phone market, ...wait, what? Who the hell is Cody and why did he beat the top 3 entrants on the market????"

3534
Iain - it went to DC of course!  ;D

However, compared to the stark nothing before, having to manage "too much poor quality communication" is such a relatively small downside which is why I hoped to convey that the pendulum only needs to swing 50 percent back for my idea of a happy medium.

I certainly don't have all the answers, but I think user side browser plugins might help. For example your user filter has "favorite operands" that you pick and choose for each site you visit.

For example on Slashdot "auto hide First Post and the next consecutive Anonymous Coward posts". However, no other site really has the First Post meme.

On YouTube it would be "Autohide all comments that are not spelled correctly"
.  Hehe for Nigerian emails it would be "Auto Spambox" all emails that mention more than $1,000!  ;D

3535
I think it is not so easy as that.  I believe this mood is more of a counterweight dialectic entry.

After all, for centuries many things were not available in any kind of expedient fashion except through the reporting news services. And except for a token letters to the editor section, readers couldn't hear each other in response to that news.

I have spent a chunk of years where "real life" meant "closed on Oct 1. Will open again in March. Bye!"  Wait for it... "Real Life" (TM) was Always Off.

Where does one go for five months? The Always On Internet .

So I suggest it's just the pendulum and all it has to do is swing a little back to the other side.

Hmm, I'm in the group of once-excited by Linux, and now while I respect it, I'm just worn out and will stay with Windows. Speaking of Ubuntu, *they* were responsible for some of my worst "burned four times" experiences! (Details some other time).

For me it was about the reasons *why* to consider moving to Linux. Blue Screens really don't happen much anymore, some companies are using more and more complicated proprietary software that only exists on Windows, and updates just seem to be really hard and that bothers me. Having to write over with the new version of the OS just feels wrong to me. And in Ubuntu's case they come really really fast!

Another reason is social. I agree with those who think that Vista could have been a great Linux opportunity. Instead it just drifted away somewhere, and Win7 mostly got the job done. I think we even have one more chance with the UI-formerly-known-as-Metro. But I don't see the tidal wave of momentum on the brink of overtaking Windows just yet.

So part of me just wants to use my energy on something else until the "popular opinion" just "Decides" that the time has come for Linux.

Hmm, the spikes are back so the stuff I did earlier wasn't a real fix.

I find that a lot of TOS have section headers, so a lot of them you can skip over because the title says stuff like "arbitration" or "account security" etc.

...snipped...
PS: not being on facebook would be being a sociopath, not a psychopath. just sayin...
...snipped...

Officially there is no difference anymore. Both psychopathy and sociopathy have been combined under Anti-Social Personality Disorder (APSD) in the DSM-IV. Many shrinks now consider the terms to be synonymous, though a number of them still separate the two diagnoses.

Jim

DSM 5 is due about 2013 according to Wikipedia. Fun fact from Wiki: "The publication of the DSM, with tightly guarded copyrights, now makes APA over $5 million a year, historically adding up to over $100 million."

I'm already documented antisocial, though really it has to do with comfort zone- I won't talk unless I am comfortable talking in that environment, so my facebook is purely for keeping tabs on people that I don't like. Somehow, that alone is bad enough to get a shrink to put tags on me and try to sell me pills that are documented to cause the very things they are designed to treat.

Needless to say as soon as I turned 18 and could make my own decisions regarding that kind of thing, ALL of that stopped. I'm better off now than I ever was relying on professional attention, and I'm even riding out the most stressful times I've ever had in my life. Doesn't that kind of thing point finger at the shrinks and say "What exactly was it you were doing for me?"

I've had a kinda rough year of transition growth, and I would like to point out that "not all docs are created equal". I have a pretty good primary care doc who knows his stuff, and as I am moderately smart I amped up the level of dialogue and so we examined the available medicines by the type of effect on neurotransmitters. So he's willing and able to keep up with an patient "active in the process".

Can you get into Safe Mode and maybe try something like System Restore?

I tried PaleMoon, X time ago it gave me a problem (either at home or at work, I now no longer recall.)

I ended up on Cometbird.

I WAS on "Hardware Accelertion", I vaguely recall that kind of thing causing fatal crashes at work, but maybe never considered the home angle ... stand by while I reboot Cometbird...

"Hardware Acceleration" is now off, and the smooth scrolling/auto scrolling are also off, I did a full defrag, and rebooted, and things seem to be a fair bit better.

General Software Discussion / Firefox Spikes
« Last post by TaoPhoenix on August 10, 2012, 07:55 PM »
For X amount of time now, I've been noticing random stalls on web activities. Lately I started putting Task Manager on, and basically every web action I do spikes the CPU. Just typing in this box does it, but the signature annoying one is scrolling pages. Basically any page I scroll shoots the CPU to some 40-90%.

What is that all about? I do know I have a sub derivative of Firefox, (originally chosen to stop a different delay recovering resources when I closed the browser) but it's like it has gotten worse lately. Anyone know if that is at all familiar to Firefox, or am I back to being the Resident Pest with an somewhat non-standard system that messes up people's diagnostics?

Anyone know of something like a hand-optimized variant of Firefox designed for pure speed?

Edit: It's almost like it's a rendering problem, moving windows around does it too.

Good catch. I supposed I am mildly annoyed at myself that I am falling for the clickbait titles lately. This is the third time on a DC news item I've done that. :(

But they're different wrongs. So stop being a murderous terrorist and join Facebook and take your pink pill so you can be a nice docile little narcissistic sheep. That's a good boy now! Yes you are! :o
