Why should XYplorer customers care what name the new product has?:

XYplorer will not stop to exist (and being developed). Other than the name, both products will be 100% identical,

Because it's there! Just plain orneriness (or cussedness)... at least in my case!

xy in English is pronounced "zye" as in "xylophone"

how do I know that this one is xy-plorer and not xyp-lorer or x-yplorer?
The three words are equally meaningless to Joe I.T. Average.

Good point, Curt. I'm pretty sure that it's meant to be X-Y-Plorer.

General Software Discussion / Re: All My Software

Here's a general thread about software databases.

Oddly, despite being *sure* that All My Software has been discussed in more detail in the past here at DC, my searches for it have beeen fruitless... Maybe the Doomer can comment as it appears he may have been using it over the past year (see his post here).

EDIT: I should clarify that it's pronounced this way at the beginning of a word, but completely differently at the end.

I'm still running it - it's been stable (even when disconnecting my Samsung YP-T9, which doesn't connect as a drive) and my Motorola RAZR. I'm still finding the additional features useful, though I'm waiting for the novelty to wear off....

Same here lanux! I have a license for USB Safely Remove and love it. So far, Zentimo features a lot of subtle little tweaks that I really like. I haven't really had a chance to test the major new features, but I've looked at them and like what I see.

Well, don't worry feel too bad, Curt. The giveaway does NOT include an update to 1.1, which is due out next and which apparently fixes some issues in Vista and Windows 7:

the native Windows Safely Remove feature cannot stop device and spine down the hard drive with power off in Windows Vista and 7. We’ve resolved that problem in Zentimo 1.1 final. At this moment Zentimo can switch hard drive power off and spin it down after its safely remove in Windows Vista and 7. I hope we will released Zentimo 1.1 final next week.

For myself, I purhcased a lifetime license for USB Safely Remove a long time ago and love it I have Zentimo activated, installed, and running and I can see things that I like about it. A lot (displays a lot of useful info about my USB devices for a start). I have the option of a very chea upgrade with two years updates to Zentimo from USB Safely Remove and simply can't decide if I really need any of the extra functionality. Time will tell - I need more free time to explore the differences/additional features. That'll have to wait until this evening or tomorrow.

Was there ever a small window of time when someone else could register it?   ;)

??

Do you mean Zentimo? I successfully registered it around the time I posted about it, above. Or have I misunderstood you?

You do have to use Windows 7 Pro or Ultimate (if you have XP Pro you can upgrade) so although the XP image comes without paying for a license it isn't exactly free,

Very true. However, if you have a standalone license for XP (and I suspect that Superboyac does, given that he built his own desktop a year or so ago), you can run and VM program that you wish and install XP in that.

+1 for XP mode. However, I have found that it is intensely slow to load up... to the point that I rarely use it. I had intended to learn how to use ArcGIS 9.1 properly but find that the double whammy of apathy (I had three years during which it was installed on my XP machine and *almost* never opened it) and the slowness with which XP mode opens and closes means that I rarely use it.

NB XP Mode is nice and quick once it has loaded. I WISH that the VM that XP Mode comes with and loads under would run prior versions of Windows - I'd love to play around with a VM of 3.11 (nostalgia). Finally, I have 4GB of DDR2 RAM on my notebook and it's maxed out. I have assigned 2GB to my XP VM. This may explain the lethargy with which XP Mode opens and closes...

Holy crap! I'm with Robertson on his perspective. WTF? We used to be able to buy Vinyl, audio cassettes, or CD hard copies and were thus able to convert them as we saw fit (vinyl to cassette, cd to mp3, etc.)... Of course, from a strictly (and ultra-) capitalist perspective, what the copyright/intellectual property owners are doing makes perfect sense - protecting and ensuring a revenue stream.

I suppose we have to consider as well that the copying technology that is readily available to Joe Q public has improved exponentially, along with the ease of sharing media. To make a good copy of, say, a book even 15 years ago took A LOT of effort and, to do it right, VERY expensive equipment that few mortals had access to... Today unless the media is DRM protected endless, perfect, copies of media are possible, along with the ability for individuals to share them.

Waffling... I'll stop now  :-[

Ghacks/Windows 7 have just started an in-depth review

The first installement, unboxing an HTC Mozart - the HTC HD 7? or is it the Surround? - is here. Promises to be a good series, I'm looking forward to reading the rest of it.

It's odd... since reading (and posting in) this thread, it occurred to me to check my version of Flash and my update settings. It's up to date and automatic updates for it are enabled. I've had no trouble with this whatsoever on Vista or XP 32-bit and 7 64-bit. Luck of the draw, I guess?!

I like the poster, Curt  It nicely captures a concept I try to instill in my students (the point is usually about applying to university), chiefly that if you don't try you're guaranteed to fail but if you do try you might just surprise yourself and others (I speak from experience - I attended two very prestigious universities and have often been asked how I was able to get into them: I applied!).

But another problem is, that the user has nothing to say about the length or order of the various delays, but can merely chose between 'delay' or 'pause'. Nor can the user order what program to start all last. The absence of these features is why I have ditched Soluto, and still am using R2 Startup Delayer

This disappointed me as well when I tried Soluto a few months ago. I'm intrigued by the ability to delay system files, but not enough to prompt me to try Soluto again (I run WinPatrol and am very content with it), for one reason because I found removing it a bit of a chore. I also recall being underwhelmed with it in practice, my objections being in line with what hpearce experienced.
