General Software Discussion / Re: Attention: All TheBAT! users!

I've used TheBat + AntiSpamSniper (freeware version) and no antivirus for quiet a while, and haven't had any problems.

When I used the BayesIT antispam plugin I had freezes several times a month, though.

well it's nice to hear you discovered theproblem.  sounds like solution is to uninstall avast?
Or at least disable it while doing the initial import of your mails.

Keeping a zillion mails on your server doesn't sound like the best way of doing mail 'backups' by the way, especially not on POP3.

I can't help you with the chkdsk /r bug, but with World of Goo make sure you are using the latest version. There was a resolution bug with some of the earlier versions of that game.

Of course, if you are using the latest version then I guess they didn't fully fix the bug.
Oh, there have been updates? I remember trying to look for updates some months back, but couldn't find any on their site... guess I'll give it another go, thanks :)

gothic and i are sitting here experimenting with blocking access to the forum with old SESSIONID info in urls.
please let me know if anyone gets errors explicitly about this while they are surfing the site.
Sounds like a good move - I assume this is to make jacking somebody else sessions harder?

I think I've found a Win7 bug: when using the /R parameter to chkdsk (scan for bad sectors), it starts gobbling up all my physical RAM - chkdsk isn't exactly the application I'd expect to use 6+ gigabytes :)

Also, I can't play World Of Goo in fullscreen mode, it keeps changing resolution like crazy. But that might be a WoG bug or display drivers rather than a Win7 problem.

1. most forum software searches completely and silently ignore search terms that are 3 characters or less. Quite often this means I can't search for what I need (there are a lot of terms that are 3 characters, but are not necessarily 'cut words' like "the" or "are").  But for chrissake, tell me if you're ignoring something in my search terms - especially if it's the only thing in the search!

2. support forums that don't let you search unless you've registered.  If I'm evaluating a product or just want to see if there's a solution to a particular problem, I don't want to have to jump through the hoops of registering for a forum I'll probably never want to make a post in.
Amen!

#1 is something that doco is guilty of too - it's annoyed me a few times here and there.

#2 is really annoying. I've signed up for enough sites already >_<

Oh, how could I forget?

Saturnus - Christ Goodbye. Great stuff, although I prefer the Roskilde Festival live version from "For The Loveless Lonely Nights", it's a bit more uptempo.

Wow64node and two program files folders isn't a vista/win7 thing, it's a win64 thing - XP64 uses the same structure. This is a bit quirky, but not that big of a deal imho.

What I don't like is the "shadow stuff" vista (and thus win7) does - instead of making compatibility folders for programs that play dirty and try to write to their program folder, the OS should simply block access. Sure, it'd break a shitload of software, but perhaps that would be wake-up call to developers...

Anyway, Win7 is great. It really flies on my computer, definitely snappier than XP. I really love superfetch vs. XP's limited prefetcher (and yes, I do have the RAM to burn). With proper hardware acceleration the UI also feels smoother than XP, and there's no shearing/tearing when moving things around. And I really like the little UI touches, it's a great idea to merge the process bar and quicklaunch, and the ability to select individual tabs in IE is really nice, hope that firefox will be Win7-enabled soon.

General Software Discussion / Re: The Best Of: text editors
« Last post by f0dder on May 28, 2009, 01:24 PM »
Thanks, all,for the feedback. I would still think that the need for a text editor to handle humongous files would be rare but I'm sure it's a lifesaver when you do need it. I probably haven't even read 100,000+ pages of text in my entire lifetime let alone having read that much in a single text file.
Yeah, there's a few situations where it might come in handy. I don't mind my day-to-day editor not handling huge files very well, if it does everything else I need nicely... I can always bring out a heavy-duty (but probably simpler) editor from the arsenal for special jobs :)

I haven't had a problem with it on huge files- again, they aren't major changes I'm making... so I'm not sure if that's why it works for me.
Interesting - there's quite a lot of posts on the forums about problems opening large files, and I've had it crash on me as well when testing. Perhaps it's mostly related to files that have syntax highlight activated? *shrug*

wraith808: huh? Notepad++ on large files? Because of scintilla, it's one of the editors that tend to barf once you try opening something not even remotely huge... unless there's been made some extremely severe fixes in the last month or so.

I do wonder why people have to edit text files that large. Viewing and searching is understandable wrt. logs, but editing? O_o

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: AntispamSniper For The Bat!
« Last post by f0dder on May 27, 2009, 05:58 PM »
Suggestion: I would reduce the screenshots a bit, especially the ones that are either obvious (whitelist, blacklist) or don't by themselves tell much to somebody who doesn't already know what the feature is (DNSBL, URIBL), or could be summarized in less space with text (antiphishing).

Pictures are nice, but imho it makes the review a bit long, and some of the screen space would be better used for a short summary of/introduction to the mentioned feature.

Other than that, nice job - and a great program. I've used AntiSpamSniper (free version) for a while myself and have been pretty pleased with it.

Norton is probably throwing a hissy fit - it kinda sucks anyway. Of course you can't rule out the possibility of somebody hacking the treewalk site and infecting the executables, but I find it more likely that norton being plain old crapware - at least that'd be business as usual.

You guys put System Of A Down, Marylin Manson and Nine Inch Nails in a metal play list? :P
Well, System Of A Down is nu-metal, so it sorta qualifies... and if you put oldsk00l snobbery aside, they've actually made a couple of OK tracks. I wouldn't call anything Manson has made metal (portrait of an american family is more punkish than it's metal), but imho a lot of his tracks fit decently in a metal playlist (if you're not going for purist :)). As for NIN, well, Reznor has varied his style quite a bit across his albums. Broken fits perfectly in an aggressive metal playlist.

For some brutal stuff, check out DIE and Dawn Of Demise - those are guaranteed \m/etal, with a vengeance and all. Disclaimer: I know some of the guys from those two bands, so you could see this as a blatant ad :P

Oh, and while it doesn't really belong in an "ultimate metal playlist" (we've already drifted a bit OT), you might want to check out volbeat. It's in the softer end, more rock than metal really... although I suppose you could invent a genre called Elvis-metal for them :)

Really, I don't see the point unless you want notifications, which I find very distracting & annoying.
I kind like them since I follow a bunch of forums. If I need to do serious and über-concentrated work (like, being close to a project deadline) I shut down my mail client and instant-messenger stuff though. But for regular work and computer use, I don't get distracted much by IM or mail notifications.

Something speedy?

Nine Inch Nails: Broken: Wish. When that track comes on, you'll generally (irrespectively of the situation) see me jumping around yelling THIS IS THE FIRST DAY OF MY LAST DAYS!, headbanging, etc. Can't help it. The whole broken album is anger, rage and desperation distilled into one ~40min outburst. :-* :-* :-*

See if you can find Vader's Reign Forever World EP - We evoke dominion! We bring this world to it's knees!.

Dunno. As soon as I receive new mail, Miranda notifies me of it. In the case of Yahoo, the system is a bit flaky (so it could notify you the next day), and GMail is supposed to check every 30 minutes.
But Miranda interacts with your POP3 or IMAP account, yes? Then it has to check for mail every "X" minutes :)

Personally, I set TheBat to check every 5 minutes (couldn't remember whether I used 5 or 10 minutes, and noticed I had it set at 3 - decided to bump to 5 to be a bit more polite to the mailservers). Contemplating moving to IMAP-based mail (and perhaps ditching TheBat in favor of the less cluttered ThunderBird), along with MailStore/whatever to index older mails.

Really tasty program, also faster at scanning than WinDirStat (for some reason I can't figure out how to stop WDS from using multiple scanning threads, which is about the lamest idea ever when not split across physical drives). The visual effect when populating is great, I really like the highlight-and-fade thing (exect on mouse hovering, but of course that's at thing you can disable).

Nice work, Umberto!

Developer's Corner / Re: Own an antivirus system in C#
« Last post by f0dder on May 25, 2009, 03:59 AM »
I'm sorry if the following sounds harsh, but... if you need to ask this kind of question, you aren't ready to write an antivirus application (and imho, an effective AV system today is way outside the scope of what a single developer can do).

If you want to protect the system, you need to write driver code that hooks into the kernel, so you can do scanning before the program is run, and possibly hook a whole bunch of file- and registry-related functions in order to do heuristic behavioral blocking.

For a scanner, you need to implement a x86 code emulator in order to reliably do things like generic unpacking and do it safely.

I took a look at the BoxedApp SDK, and it is not suitable (nor designed) for scenarios like security software.
