Living Room / Re: Internet Explorer 10 arrives on Windows 7

Biggest worry here is what IE-specific web apps break this time, after upgrading... Yes, I know it's the task of the developer to try and anticipate on any browser changes, but with IE the changes often seem to be so huge, anticipation is next to impossible. We'll see how the story goes, this time, I'll wait a couple of weeks and ask around a bit :tellme:

And that's exactly why I won't upgrade. Banks are at best marginally competent. I told my wife once, "Watch this. It will take me a hour just to login & check my balance." I was right. Last week I spent over 3 hours getting another site to work. (That involved 3 computers with 2 running clients.) One of my banks forced you to stick with IE 6 for years.

The mere fact that they make things IE specific (and often IE only) tells you that there's something fundamentally mental going on.

I think I'll skip it... I have a hard enough time with the few web sites that I use IE for... They work now, so I'm NOT going to mess with that.

Soju is the people's drink! (rough translation as it doesn't translate elegantly)

Soju is some extremely strong stuff that shouldn't be drank alone, but mixed.  My first experience with Soju in Korea was the WORST hangover I've EVER had in my LIFE!  I puked and excreted green for 3 days.   :o

Hahahaha~! ;D Funny thing is it isn't really all that strong, but it's deceptive as hell! It's generally around 20%, but doesn't taste all that strong, making it much easier to pound back than something like tequila. It's even worse when you go out with all the guys... Koreans pound it back incredibly fast. I quit drinking it and limited myself to 1 and only 1 cup after having been decimated by it more than once. (Took me a while to learn my lesson there! :) )

And yeah, it makes a much better mixer! :) The current rage now is soju mixed with drinking vinegar, which only makes it easier to drink faster! :P

(I started to start this in the basement, just because of the response I wanted to give.  But I refrained, so at least it can start here.)

I can see that entirely! :) I don't think I have anything to add here that people can't use their imagination for. (Hint: A dash of cynicism, a tablespoon of apathy, a half cup of paranoia, and a liberal handful of vulgarities. ;D )

It's just too surreal.

@Tomos - Ooops. Yeah. Got lazy there. But it doesn't make much of a difference. Well, a 17% difference. :D But the point is that fuel efficiency is against the law in the US. :P

BTW - Looks like the Canadian version blows compared to the UK model.

http://www.vw.ca/en/...9f6ab08c97063c51cb6c

that'd be like putting up taxes on beer in Germany - then there'd by a riot.
I think it's a cultural thing, in every country there is some-thing that the people wont accept, that will push them over the edge.

I remember a few years ago they tried to push up taxes on soju in Korea... They just about had a revolt! :D Seriously. People everywhere had buttons on their coats/shirts. Signs everywhere. Massive protests. The tagline was (IIRC):

소주는 우리 민주의 술!

Soju is the people's drink! (rough translation as it doesn't translate elegantly)

If it isn't a stupid question why aren't there riots in the street over this?

On fuel efficiency, it is illegal to produce fuel efficient cars for the US market. I'm not sure what the penalties are though.

Here's an article on the topic:

http://www.activistp...nt-deliberately.html

And from the VW US site:

Screenshot - 3_1_2013 , 8_58_05 PM.png

In miles per gallon, it's 22~32.

Now for the UK VW site:

Screenshot - 3_1_2013 , 8_59_11 PM.png

35 to 74.

So, the same car you get in Europe is roughly twice as fuel efficient. Or a heck of a lot more efficient anyways.

Looks like the US oil companies noticed the increased mileage and adjusted their price for diesel fuel accordingly.

Sounds like they've done well in learning their douchebaggery lessons from Thomas Edison & JP Morgan. :D

In the U.S., Jammers are outlawed federally.

I know. That was just tongue in cheek. But still, it would be cool to have jammers if for no other reason than just to fart with the fuzz. :D

I know used is a better buy, sometimes, but new is special.

+1 and +1 ;D

A decent tune up and some work on a used car can make a WORLD of difference. Again, going to the better value thingy.

But yeah, it's nice to drive a new car that is fresh off the lot. Kind of seems like that whole thing about virginity and all that. (The sex metaphor MUST come into the discussion at some point -- we're talking about cars after all! :) ) Same thing goes for hopping off the gondola and hitting the slopes early in the morning and skiing on virgin snow - it's just so much nicer than compacted snow and granulated ice. New is always special.

SpeedDial is Opera's new tab page.

Um...what?

This is by no means new.

I believe you may be reading this differently than the author intended... I see this a a statement of fact, that SpeedDial is a feature that Opera uses as its new-tab page. ie a new blank tab displays SpeedDial, as opposed to the feature being new.

Darn language. I vote we all start being a bit more precise and mathematical and using brackets, braces, and parentheses for clarity. e.g.

SpeedDial is Opera's open parentheses new tab close parentheses page.

Which could be clearly distinguished from:

SpeedDial is Opera's new open parentheses tab page close parentheses.

(etc.)

:P

(English is simply horrible when it comes to clarity and being unambiguous in certain cases. You need to be overly verbose for what should be simpler. I believe Russian has some nifty features that help in these areas.)

Speed dial has supported touch for quite a while. It really is a great feature and certainly beats the way Google defiled it in Chrome.

...INSURANCE! (ripoff!)...

I found out a little while ago that back where I'm from the insurance companies have written new laws that make insurance even more insanely expensive. "Ripoff" is putting it mildly.

That link, was unreadable for me.

Seriously...For what is supposed to be a professional news post, the lack of basic grammar makes me wonder how these people get jobs.

If you have some classical education, it's almost impossible to listen to most people speak as they are barely capable of speaking their own language properly. Similar for print now.

Publishing is more about profit than publishing. Tight deadlines and all that make it difficult to properly edit or proof anything, let alone do any real journalism or fact checking.

Press releases from companies have been accepted as news for years. None of this should be a surprise.
3442
You really have to wonder who is writing these things and why? The references aren't coincidence - they're either meaningful or they're misdirection or just to screw with people's heads.

Does anyone other than me get a smug look on their face whenever they hear anyone say something like, "Well, everyone needs to pay their fair share in taxes"?

This sounds like all the more reason to decouple the carriers, hardware manufacturers, and the OS.

You can't decouple hardware SDKs/APIs, but there's no good reason why the OS can't be. Sure, some math issues for some chips, but still, those aren't that hard to work around with things like conditional compilation. (I've got a math issue on a couple of my devices in some cases - Raspberry Pis.)

Actually, it would be cool to see a hardware add-on to turn a Raspberry Pi into a smart phone! :D

« Last post by Renegade on February 26, 2013, 09:26 PM »
"It's only funny until somebody loses an eye."  :P

The correct answer, as with all things in IT, is, "It depends."

DDoS by a foreign military is an act of war.
DDoS by a violent, paramilitary religio-political/whatever organization is resistance/terrorism, and it all depends on what side of the fence you're on.

Killing people is murder? We don't call it that when it's self-defense.

It all depends... And the author isn't remotely interested in addressing anything except to dismiss or trivialize anything that doesn't scream "criminal" or "terrorism". He's a flake.

My next vehicles will likely be some sort of a larger vehicle for family and cargo, e.g. minivan, then a compact or sedan, and an el cheapo beater of some sort -- only concerned about how it runs there.

I'd like to get something like 4wd posted there -- an older, reliable jeep-style/4wd. :D

Whatever it ends up, I'll get 'em all used.

Living Room / Re: DDoS: Terrorism or legitimate?
« Last post by Renegade on February 26, 2013, 08:21 PM »
The author barely pretends to address the issue. He's merely screaming that DDoS is criminal. He's a douche.

There is no room for prevarication. A distributed denial of service attack is criminal and may well be a terrorist attack. There is no high ground here. If you participate in a DDoS attack, you're either a criminal or a terrorist...and a fool.

Yeah... DDoS is "terrorism". Ridiculous. In the extreme. The guy is an idiot and just posting for absurd shock value. It's typical tabloid journalism. Tomorrow he'll post about bat-baby vampires drinking the blood of children raised by werewolves in Atlantis.

While hijacking thousands of computers for a DDoS is one thing, it's a very different thing to yell out to a crowd of people, "Hey, let's all visit somerandomwebsitedotcom tomorrow at high noon," and then laugh as the site goes down.

When you can be without owning a car, keep it that way. Unless it is your hobby and you like to do maintenance yourself. Only a wife can spend/waste money faster than a car. But only just. Of course thats in the case you don´t get stopped by police or being caught by a camera...and find 3 weeks later a check in the mail for 50 euros, written out to the municipal, because you were speeding 3 kilometers an hour. Or 5 km/h, but then the ticket is already 75 euro.

Freedom, right. To independedly go from one gas station to the next, while bringing the rest of your money to your local government. In the Netherlands a car like eleman´s would easily cost you 120 euro a month or more, depending on the size of the engine, the type of fuel it uses and general weight. The car has not moved one inch. If you want to do that, you pay close to 2 euros per liter of fuel, depending on type and location of the gas station.

Also, when your car is 3 years or older, you have to do an annual checkup at a station that is allowed to do so. Whatever they say is broken/worn/out of regulation you have to fix. Prices for this test vary, I always had to pay around 65 euros. Cost of the repairs would vary. And if the repairs take too long, you would have to pay again for the test.

Insurance for a car like eleman´s, would also be around 120 euros monthly for not much more than basic coverage. Fines for any of the above are high.

No, When I came to Paraguay, I didn´t need a car anymore and that felt liberating...much more liberating than being the owner of a car ever gave me.

Of course, your mileage may vary, but I am glad to be rid of that moneypit.

Seems to me like you're mixing up the freedom that a car brings with the chains that a bureaucracy throws around you. They're not the same.

I'd love to post a bit on that, however, I wouldn't ever post it as I possibly might perhaps say something that would maybe be admitting to or not admitting to what in some jurisdictions might or might not be some sort of an offense or non-offense or compliance or non-compliance with an existing or imaginary regulation or statue or unspoken rule or pigment of someone's imaginatory fantastical illusions of stuff. :P
