Here is the always amazing Ella Fitzgerald singing in front of Count Basie Orchestra.  That's as close to perfection as it's going to get.  I just posted this on youtube and I think you guys will thank me for this!

General Software Discussion / Re: Format Factory ASSHOLE installation of Ask.com
« Last post by superboyac on November 03, 2010, 09:40 PM »
Thanks, dude.  I guess that's the most we can accomplish with our rants...a little sympathy.
3303
So I was updating my Format Factory installation with the Ask.com toolbar.  I like this program, but since it's free, it has to offer to install the Ask.com toolbar and all that bullshit.  Well, right at the end of the installation when you get to uncheck all those ask.com boxes, as I was clicking to uncheck the box, it just finished the installation before I could clikc Next or uncheck the other two boxes.  It just finished!  Now, I have the fucking ask.com toolbar installed which I HATE because it's a nightmare to uninstall sometimes.  I hate this bullshit.  First of all, why are there THREE fucking checkboxes for the ask.com???  A bunch of assholes, all of this bullshit.  I hate it.  I know.  I said I was going to not rant and be positive.  but cmon, now it gave me a headfake at the end.  What the heck am I supposed to do?  Now, i can't even uncheck what they're allowing me to uncheck??

And maybe it's a bug.  fine.  maybe something weird just happened this one time.  but I find it funny that the part something would screw up on is the part where I'm trying to get rid of the advertisement.  A little too coincidental for me.  I hate all this stuff so much, it's unhealthy, I know.  I liked the program, too...everyone has to be such assholes.  man.

superboyac: it's because of Oracle's tradition of lies, backstabbing, deceit and being just generally despicable. Sure, that's pretty much something you expect from any big corporation, but Oracle just... seems to be worse.

True, and because Oracle is one of the quickest companies to sue everyone in sight at the drop of a hat (or a perceived patent encroachment). In other words, Oracle doesn't make the world a better place. Cisco is another company that's similar -- they repeatedly steal open source code and then try to pawn it off as their own until they get taken to court under the GPL.
Yeah, that's pretty horrible.  Two of the biggest names in enterprise technology...shame.  What does that mean?  You have to be an asshole to be really successful??

General Software Discussion / How do I fix my gibberish font in Firefox?
« Last post by superboyac on November 02, 2010, 11:08 PM »
A few weeks ago, i started noticing some gibberish font showing up in Firefox in some places.  Here's an example:
Screenshot_20101102210547.png

Also, on Engadget, none of the Post titles show up.  All of the titles are blank, but if I move my mouse over it, I get the color changing mouseover effect, except it's just one big colored rectangle.  I must have done something to screw it up but I have no idea what it is.  Any advice?

Living Room / Re: Am I the only one who finds the new Apps-based world boring?
« Last post by superboyac on November 02, 2010, 05:51 PM »
Is this not an argument for the whole world of unix and linux? It seems to still be a world that is thriving with enthusiasts writing programs and scripts, mostly for free, that are not motivated primarily by the desire to make money. The distinction between users and developers remains blurry, and shell scripting is so powerful, one can amuse oneself endlessly writing customized scripts for one's own use. The proliferation of apps and portable devices is primarily aimed at practical needs that can be sold to end-users. The whole locked-into-devices-vendors-OS's-websites trend was already pioneered by Microsoft with IE, the infamous registry, its net-framework, etc. The strategy then was: make windows-related things so dependent on windows, that you have to keep buying  Microsoft products to use the things you like, or to develop things that run on windows.

I still hesitate with unix/linux apps -- because I so hate hunting for where various libraries, macros, and directories are in THIS installation -- in order to succeed in a make and compile of some application.
I love this information.  I had never thought about that before.  Thanks so much.

If you don't reboot very often (I don't) you don't get the Flash update prompt very often.

I hate Flash on general principals, it's just a lazy way of adding gaudy crap to a site that didn't need to be there in the first place.

Oooo an animated banner on the top of a page - That's distracting as hell and makes my eyes try to cross vertically.

It's odd... since reading (and posting in) this thread, it occurred to me to check my version of Flash and my update settings. It's up to date and automatic updates for it are enabled. I've had no trouble with this whatsoever on Vista or XP 32-bit and 7 64-bit. Luck of the draw, I guess?!
yeah, you might just be lucky.  I saw it on my computer.  Fine. that was ok because I fiddle around with my machine so much.  But then I saw it on everyone's computers.  My sister, my friend, i was looking over someone's shoulder at work and saw it...yeah, i would say you are the exception more so than the rule.
3309
In fairness, automatic updates of java and flash are a really, really good idea considering the track record of exploits. Just annoying that it's not streamlined with Windows Update, but requires the use of individual installers. Would be really nice if MS let 3rd party developers into Windows Update...
That's true.  I have no problem with the updates themselves.  It's the WAY it updates that I don't like.  And because this kind of experience is typical, I'm actually afraid of updating.  Because I know it's working fine before the update.  Then you update, and all of a sudden there are problems.  Your browser starts saying flash is not installed, but it is.  Then you reinstall.  Then you uninstall.  rinse. repeat.  You look for solutions online.  it's all one big headache.  that's the REAL reason why i turn off automatic updates.
3310
Why don't you just turn off the automatic updates?

http://www.macromedi...tings_manager05.html
because I've turned it off in the past.  Then, one day, there's a stupid error out of the blue.  Then you have to reinstall/uninstall a few times until everything gets working.  Then you have to remember, 'Oh, I have to go back and turn off updates again" because, of course, as soon as you reinstall, the updates will be back on.  And, of course, there's no obvious way to change the setting.  You change it through their website?  How weird is that?  Yeah...they didn't do that intentionally. sure.
3311
I see.  Wow.  That's unfortunate.
3312
Hey!  40hz is back!  Welcome back, buddy.

I've heard so many bad things about Oracle, but I don't understand it because I just haven't been following.  So why does Oracle have such a bad reputation?  I have to deal with oracle reps here at work sometimes.  I've been let down recently.  I asked for a business process diagram tool (see my other threads) and they assured me they have something.  I asked him to show me an example of documentation other companies have created.  i DON'T want to hear a sales pitch or a demonstration.  i actually want to just see an example of what some other company created.  They never got back to me.  I know the guy too, he says he hasn't forgotten.

Living Room / Re: What's Your Internet Speed/Reliability SATISFACTION?
« Last post by superboyac on November 02, 2010, 11:13 AM »
After reading gothic's post about ISP's, I have a question...

I have $50 to spend a month (maybe more if the ISP is great).  Other than the typical options which are your cable provider and landline providers, what other companies offer are in my area and how do I find them?  Please don't just say Google, because google's a mess.  How would you explore the alternatives?  Do any of you know of lesser-known companies that are good?
3314
How about this one?

In Ubuntu if I try to watch YouTube videos, YouTube tells me I need to update to the latest Flash player, but clicking the link to Adobe's website I am informed that Chromium comes with the latest version of Flash installed. Huh?
Sheesh.  You know, I'm very sensitive about the impressions I give off about myself: as you know, I'll come off as a whining, irritable, negative, etc...kind of person.  And it's true, I can't deny it.  But I can't stop myself from thinking through all this stuff, and the more I learn and discover, the more AARRGH I get!  Haha...I know...and these forums get me even more so because I have to social inhibitions...so i feel I'm just ranting left and right.  Again, i want to be a problem solver...not a whine...I'm working on it.

Anyway...back to the point.  So I'm thinking through this flash stuff and asking: what is really the problem here?  What is the annoying thing and what is Adobe really trying to accomplish here?  Why did Flash become this thing it has become?  An the long and the short of it is...they have gotten the word "Flash" into everyone's head, geek or not, and that's all they need.  Because Flash isn't really a product.  it's not something that we would go out and buy.  Like, we don't go out and buy mp3 decoders, or other decoders, or html, you know?  So, very cleverly, they've made it very "normal" for people to treat Flash like it's a regular piece of software, when it's really just a tool to show website content.  And because it's so widespread, you HAVE to have it.  So they've made sure we see Flash and say Flash all the time.  Now, everyone knows Flash as much as they know Windows, Mac, Internet Explorer, etc.  You don't see Ajax popping it's head out all over the place.  My friends won't know what Ajax is.
Anyway, good job Adobe.  Way to nag us into popularity.  it's like the annoying boy who goes after the girl but has zero charm and just nags her until she gives in.
3315
Haha thanks stephen!  That's how you lighten the mood up!  I've been seeing that flash dialog a lot lately also!
3316
Thanks!  I'm going to check it out.  I think I've heard of this Sperry company before...
3317
That, and there are two different flash programs needing update - the one for IE and the one for FF and Opera. The auto-update program gets its claws into the very heart of the OS occasionally running its pop-up during the computer boot process. Also, flash installs itself not into \Program Files\ like a regular app, but rather into the \Windows\system32\Macromed folder.

I hate adobe.
Thanks for the info.  Now I hate flash even more.  I've never been a fan of Flash, despite it's uses.  I hate how it's even become a "thing".  It's not like it's a tool that we use.  It's just a stupid thing that displays content for us on websites.  I don't know why we have to deal with it so much.  It's like having notifications and updates for html standard updates and stuff.  I don't care...nobody cares.
The only time I ever actually needed to know something about flash was when I had to upload videos to youtube or my website, and I learned about flv files.  And even then, I thought it was lame that videos had to be converted to flv to put on a website.  I know that's a stupid complaint since there needs to be some standard for animation and videos on websites.  I just don't like software like Flash.  not because of what function it serves, but because of the way they go about it.  They've created a nuisance to us just so we have to say "flash" a million times a day, so they become very popular.  This is why everyone complains about windows stuff...it's because of the shitty things they run into like flash, java, needless driver issues, overly-complicated interfaces.  There's absolutely no good reason why all of us basic users of Windows should be dealing with Flash issues this much.

Living Room / Re: I'm thinking about learning how to program.
« Last post by superboyac on October 31, 2010, 08:06 PM »
C# is actually pretty good too -- it's been a while since i played around with it and i must say it would also be a good language, and perhaps better than python if you are less interested in quick coding, and more interested in developing good Object Oriented Programming habits for larger projects.
I think so.  I'm not in any rush.  i'm not even committed to the idea of becoming a legit programmer.  It's just that so many of my ideas are hindered by the fact that I'm not a programmer...both at work and personally.  So I figure if I get slowly started, maybe by the time I'm 40 or something, I'll have another really great tool under my belt.  It's really a long term plan I'm after.  I'm definitely NOT interested in just learning as an academic excercise or anything like that.  I'm at a point in my career and life that I need to focus on what it is I HAVE to do, and what I can pay others to do for me.  I'm in a sort of skills housekeeping phase right now.  i've amassed plenty of skills kind of indiscriminately over my life, and I'm now at a point where I have to just DO a lot of things.

This is kind of a weird little secret for me:  I want to get to a point in my life where I can have a programmer on-hire for myself or my company.  Someone I pay either a salary or some kind of on-going subscription kind of thing.  I'd go to that individual with my ideas and cartoons, sketches, etc. to turn into programs.  I know I'm good at that part, but the programming is really the meat of it and the thing I can't do yet.
3319
Ever since 10.1 was released, I am getting notifications to update Flash all over the place.  My home pc, my work pc, friends pc's, all my laptops.  And I swear i've updated all of them, even though I'm not really keeping track.  I just updated firefox, and after it reloads, it tells me that firefox is updated, but flash isn't.  Now, I know for sure I've updated my home PC, so I don't understand.  Either Adobe keeps updating Flash with weekly builds, or there is something wrong here.  Of course, they give no easy indication what version you are using and what the latest one is, nor when the last time you updated was.  All I know is I'd like to just stop hearing about my fucking flash being out of date.  I don't give a shit anymore.  if it's out of date, so be it...I don't want to hear about it until there's an issue I have to fix or something.  Now they're using version updates as an advertising method.  And since it's not a real ad, it makes users timid about turning it "off" because it's masked as a security risk or deadly issue.  I'm so sick of it all...

In my current condition, if I were the java update, I'd be afraid to show my face right about now.  I'd probably go nuclear on its ass.  yeah Java, you're next...don't be poking your head out anytime soon buddy.

By the way, MAJOR props to Zaine's enormous word processor review.  Man, that was a ton of work, and very well thought out and organized.

Nice find!
http://mindfulmusing...-dirty-donkey-balls/

I have to agree with those sentiments.  I'm also now terrified that the section breaks I just added are going to corrupt my document.  I have an insane amount of backup versions, so rolling back won't be a problem, but I don't even want to deal with it.  but I can't have separate page numbers and headers otherwise, so what the heck am I supposed to do?  I'm going to start looking more closely at WordPerfect and Indesign as my formal documentation tools.  More on that later.

Living Room / Re: Laptop choice: better CPU or more RAM ?
« Last post by superboyac on October 31, 2010, 06:26 PM »
Finding a good laptop is hard these days. All these "glare-type" displays actually suck. Dell and HP seem to be the only companies who still sell "business" laptops without a lot of disadvantages. A pity, really.
yup.
3323
I fixed it by going into outline mode.  I saw some weird placement of headers and I fixed it there.

No, I have not used the mvps forums much.  I'm really not that interested in participating in too many forums.  It's frustrating and a waste of time to me.  I come here for most of my questions and it has proven to be very reliable and pleasant (thanks!).
3324
I've seen a lot written about corrupted Word docs, but I haven't read much carefully since I've never had one.  I do remember that list numbering was often the culprit.

Are all these problems happening with the same document, or versions of the same document?
No, this is a different document.  I don't use any autonumbering on lists, that's why I asked for the List Numberer program that skwire recently created.  The only automated stuff I do is with the table of contents and page numbering.
3325
Word is really fucking me over at work.  I'm trying to be as cautious as possible, but problems keep coming up.  Now, when I update my page numbers, it shuffles some of my body text into the table of contents, the headers get all fucked up, and I have to undo it.  But I don't know why it's doing that.  It's a headache.  I spend more time trying fix all this crap than I do just writing the document.
