What's the Best? / Re: Voting & Ranking Programs in the Best Of section

sounds good to me - just don't make the job of modding this section too much work for yourselves :)

well the original idea was to choose the funniest ones.. since you made cody and allen made the cards, maybe you and allen can pick out your two favorites as the winners.

The CodyCards contest is almost over!

ps. how should we choose winners?

well things like bugzilla and mantis are good if you have a big multiuser project.. but for single developer todo list, i would rather have a nice local tool.  that abstractspoon one jroad posted looks nice, going to give it a try.

luckman your points are valid..
and i think you are right to a large extent; the point should not be to collect every program ever made.

what about this:
people should post their choice of favorite tool on the thread, whatever that is. ie people can say what they think is best and why.

the first post, continually updated by the mods, is to serve as some guidance; if there are a couple that are clearly favored by most people, it would probably list those.  if there are discussions about the topic or programs on other threads on dc, it should link to those.

but it's in the mods discretion to decide what goes in that first summary post.  the intention being that everyone can join in the discussion and when the mods see a point or a trend or url worth highlighting they would add it in first post.

so basically the first post is the must-read post.

other follow ups are like commentary people can read for dissenting views or elaborations, and also those posts are suggestions to the mods for stuff to add.  but it's the first post that is the important one that will save people time when they are looking for the best.

can i ask that the mods on this section (and all sections) please add a donation link to your profile so that i and other members of the forum can make donations to you to express our appreciation if the mood strikes us.

more info on how to do that here: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1283.0

What's the Best? / Voting & Ranking Programs in the Best Of section
« Last post by mouser on February 27, 2006, 04:19 PM »
mouser, I see your point but aside from ranking the programs, how could we really determine which were the top apps?

i think you answered this question yourself sort of.

i see the job of this section not as choosing the best app.
the job of this section is to let people express themselves as to what app is best at a certain task and why, and debate it.
with the first post in the thread summarizing the collective views, with relevant pointers
(pointers to other posts on dc, and pointers to things like betanews comments as brotherS suggestsion, or maybe other reviews of such programs).

so in summary, there is no need to decide which programs are best - just let people express themselves in posts to the thread, and every once and a while when something relevant is said that is worth adding to the top post (a url or an important observation, or a new program that multiple people like), then the mod adds it to the top.

what do you think?

[ps. jgpaiva and luckman you now should have the mod powers to split and merge posts and rename them, etc.]

What's the Best? / Voting & Ranking Programs in the Best Of section
« Last post by mouser on February 27, 2006, 03:31 PM »
i am very wary of numerical votes for rating programs - i think they invite abuse and manipulation by authors registering in order to inflate their votes.  i think its much preferable that instead of having polls people just post their thoughts about which program is best on that thread and why.

sounds right to me - i'm loving this bestof section more every day - i do believe it will turn out to be one of the best aspects of this forum.  the perfect way to help people to find what they are looking for.

do you have my sample alias file loaded? when you type 'acronis t' do you see a list of map related items in the list results?

it seems i forgot to add regex anchor to only match start of text and so it is mistakenly thinking its got a regex match.

will be fixed soon.

for now, the solution is to add a ^ as the start of the regular expression fields in group aliases.

great post, and beautiful looking too.
i think LuckMan212 is going to have to give a course soon on how to make a nice looking post on dc forum - i know i'd sign up.

i love the look you achieved for that chart with the big courier font.. really nice

i think we should def. add links to the main-review child board, like
Desktop Tools
-
+ Dialog Box Extenders (would point to https://www.donation...index.php?board=66.0)

also,
this chart of yours is going to be put in the main review section where i think it will be a wonderful way for people to find reviews they are intersted in - it's exactly what i was hoping we could come up with as a nice new front page to reviews.

if you dont get it sorted in a couple of days make another post and ill try to install "no aware" and url snooper in a virtual machine, and watch what it actually removes to see if i can't figure out why a reinstall doesn't fix it..
but it's hard to see what it could remove that wouldn't be fixed with a reinstall of winpcap..

there is a real dilemna about creating subsections on the forum -
on one hand it adds real logical organization to the forum, but on the other hand it hides stuff away where people never wander in.

the areas that get attention are the main sections on the forum.  right now "what's the best" is a child section of "Mini-Reviews" but i think once this section starts to fill up, we will want to move it to a main section, either sibling with Mini-Reviews or mini-reviews as a child of it.

i think one thing arguing against actually making separate section for each category is the face that there will only be a few threads in each section.  so i think i'm still leaning towards just having a main chart like yours as the first thread in the section that people can refer to and leave the threads themselves unsorted..

another possibility would be to move the folder organization to a kind of wiki format, with links to the threads.

so that the idea would be a hierarchical wiki web type organization as you have proposed, with the wiki linking into the forum threads.

opinions?

i think these these requests fall within v2 plans, just a matter of working out some remaining gui issues.
32796
this thread itself is pure brilliance, with live links to the bestof threads..
we could create the sections as you say, or just have thiread as sticky in this section so people can consult it.

and then also link to this hyperlink chart from the review page.

i think the idea of having buttons that modify the search/results is not a bad idea; it matched with the idea of modifier keywords we have been planning for v2; just have to figure out the best way to allow toolbar access of them..

but then this is definitely approaching a normal document file search tool you are requesting, and maybe a program like 'Locate' which brotherS loves might be more appropriate - or else this the idea that farr support more traditional document searching functions.
