For some reason Chrome is blocking me from downloading it.

That's was what I was referring to above.  You can use curl, wget, or such utilities to directly download it.

I don't think a pen drive will do versioning and automatic backup realtime as I edit files!

It can.  Very easily.  Install a Git repository on it, and you're good to go.  It wouldn't be automatic (though I think there are some git extensions that enable it), but you'd have backups, versioning, and the ability to get it onto other computer(s) very easily.

If it was just "any random but competent art" as a performance piece, we wouldn't care. And stories are just text, my copy is as good as your copy from Gutenberg's Mark Twain set. And for music, there's whole cultures (besides the lawsuits of grumpy musicians) of mashup. Same with pics.

Those that the art affected would care.  And that's the point of this... art affects in ways that are only quantifiable by contact and taste.  So to denigrate someone else's feeling on the matter in the way that the writer did... I think that's the offensive thing.  And then to put it to such low brow use just because I have the funds for a stunt?  That's a different form of the same.  I'm all for people being able to do whatever they will with the money that they have.  But they are also not immune to the effects of the use of their money.  I'd thought that cards against humanity were a pretty cool game idea, and the mechanics were pretty cool.  And having played it online, I was on the edge about getting a copy.  I'm no longer on the edge.  And I'm just one person, with one opinion.  But I'll use that opinion and consumer power to go against the idea that this is cool.

Having to figure out a way to download it in Chrome sucks.

Just an FYI- how you get around the malicious warning (even though we haven't checked, we're going to mark it malicious) in Chrome

I had exactly this problem with an exe file that is downloadable from my web site. Whenever I tried to download the file using Chrome it gave the warning.

The solution I found was to sign up to Google Webmaster Tools and add my site. It took several days for Google to crawl my site, and fill in any information, but I went back today and finally found loads of information there.

Now I can download my file, and there is no malicious warning any more.

It seems that once Google has checked out your site and determined that you are not a bad person, the problem goes away.

^Yeah, there's a thread on reddit about it too, and some people drew the same conclusions about ransomware.  If you're automatically updating something, err on the side of communicating what you did.  A simple expedient of making the prior messages scroll to the bottom, or at least stay on the screen would be clearer.  Especially if you're still doing stuff.

I actually like the BSOD screen- it gives more user usable info than before.  That's the way I want them to go...

Maybe.  Maybe not.  Just figured I'd suggest for a try.  It does some pretty amazing things.

My HotKeys work erratically, working when I restart Windows and then after using it for a while, it stops working.  I have Window 10 64Bit install and do not have either DropBox nor One Drive (installed but not signed in).

UPDATE: Once I paste the object into the target app, it stops working, restart the app and it works for one screencapture again.

UPDATE: reassigned to own keys and works everytime, so it does seem some app is "taking" the print screen button.  Could it be another screen grabbing app installed by the organisation (Snipping tool)?

The other option to DropBox being stupid is OneDrive being stupid, if you have that installed.  See this thread for more info.

Microsoft really needs to stop trying to be "cute".

I opened my laptop this morning to the messages:

  • "Hi."
  • "We've Updated your computer"
  • "All your files are right where you've left them"
  • "We have some new features we are excited about" (something like that)

The bad thing?  "Hi" didn't stick around for long.  Neither did the second line.  After I looked up, I saw the third line.  And it stayed there, unresponsive for over 5 minutes!  Thankfully, I knew that I'd told it it could install, so it didn't freak me out too much.  But some people are going bonkers when that comes up, and doesn't give any other information.

Thankfully, I changed it so that it has to ask me in order to restart my computer for installs.  I was notified that it needed to restart, and scheduled it for 3:30 AM.  That sort of straddles the line between leaving it on, and giving them full carte blanche.

That message *did* scare me, however.

Again, Microsoft needs to stop trying be "cute", and err on the side of being clear.

Wraith, what about removing the ".lnk" from the display?  We don't really need to see the file extension, and it would be less clutter.

Yes I used 7stacks but it would just run so slow sometimes and take forever to open if I had a lot of apps/files in the folder. I wanted a faster way, so I made this. :-)

My problem with it also, so I'll give this a try!

Nobody thought it was really a bomb. He got in trouble for perpetrating a "bomb hoax." (Whether it was an intentional hoax or not is another story.)

I think that brings up another sticky point.  What is an unintentional hoax?  The 'bomb hoax' angle was a convenient artifice for covering up their reaction.  What you're arrested for at the time (especially as a kid- think about the psychology of a kid in handcuffs), can be very different from what the final charges are.  They kept asking him, "What is this", and he kept answering the same way.  "A clock."

Living Room / CISA almost guaranteed to become law
« Last post by wraith808 on December 17, 2015, 10:10 AM »
Lawmakers Have Snuck CISA Into a Bill That Is Guaranteed to Become a Law

At 2 AM Wednesday morning, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan unveiled a 2000-page budget bill that will fund the federal government well into next year. The omnibus spending bill, as it's usually referred to, is the result of countless hours of backroom dealings and negotiations between Republicans and Democrats.

Without the budget bill (or a short-term emergency measure), the government shuts down, as it did in 2013 for 16 days when lawmakers couldn’t reach a budget deal. It contains dozens of measures that make the country run, and once it's released and agreed to, it's basically a guarantee to pass. Voting against it or vetoing it is politically costly, which is kind of the point: Republicans get some things they want, Democrats get some things they want, no one is totally happy but they live with it anyway. This is how countless pieces of bad legislation get passed in America—as riders on extremely important pieces of legislation that are politically difficult to vote against.

As Politico notes:

"In a closed-door meeting with fellow Republicans, Ryan touted a pause in Obamacare's 'Cadillac tax,' the lifting of a longstanding oil-export ban and preservation of several other policy preferences in the year-end deal, which include $1.149 trillion in spending and several hundred billion in tax breaks.
After the deal was announced, many members of both parties said Democrats won this round on federal spending. They agreed to lift the prohibition on exporting US oil, but turned back other so-called GOP policy riders, including efforts to tighten restrictions on Syrian and Iraqi refugees. The GOP also did not mount a serious effort to strip funding from Planned Parenthood, although many hardline conservatives had demanded such a move."

You see how it is. This is some House of Cards-type shit, and anyone who values their privacy is screwed, because, let's face it—CISA is small potatoes politically speaking compared to the other stuff in here. Every major political media outlet is already talking about how the deal avoids a government shutdown and is talking as though it has already been passed. And that’s because, for all intents and purposes, the agreement on the text of the bill itself was the politically difficult hurdle to clear—the actual passage of it is a foregone conclusion.

It's a Trap: Emperor Palpatine's Poison Pill

In this paper we study the financial repercussions of the destruction of two fully armed and operational moon-sized battle stations ("Death Stars") in a 4-year period and the dissolution of the galactic government in Star Wars. The emphasis of this work is to calibrate and simulate a model of the banking and financial systems within the galaxy. Along these lines, we measure the level of systemic risk that may have been generated by the death of Emperor Palpatine and the destruction of the second Death Star. We conclude by finding the economic resources the Rebel Alliance would need to have in reserve in order to prevent a financial crisis from gripping the galaxy through an optimally allocated banking bailout.

From the comments on the video:

This hits home for me. I had a situation 6 years ago (15yo)when I was in computer class and I was making a blueprint for a portable solar speaker after I finished my assignments. The teacher in his infinite wisdom takes a screenshot as "evidence" and reports it to the principal, and they both think it is a bomb. They call the police to escort me to the county jail for my dad to pick me up. I was expelled and 'sentenced' to alternative school. I took my GED test after a year of waiting to turn 16 to qualify for one. I'm now an associate in mechatronics and I want to continue working with electronics and robotics.

Meanwhile you back 350 projects!? Any quick notes about averages and some special case backing higher amounts?

I am at 376 Backed, with 7 currently active.  The most I've spent is 120 Pounds, followed by 120 USD, followed by 114 USD, and 2 100 USD.  The first is consistently putting out stuff- the next two just closed, but I anticipate no problems.  The third was a failure, with complete recompense and a product.  I was doing it more to get the collateral stuff (editing from gaming professionals, and opinions on work) and they didn't respond in time for my deadline, so that was more of a hit than the actual product.  The other 100 was ahead of schedule for the main product, and the stretch goals followed closely.

There's no way to export your data that I know of, so I haven't really done any analysis.  But I do have rules for backing, no matter how much I want to get stuff, that I've detailed before.  It's become more and more refined as I go along.  I've passed on some things that I've thought were good ideas and/or I wanted because of them- I'm pretty strict in that regard.

Most of the things that I've gotten have been in the gaming category- mostly role-playing games and board games, and accessories for both.  There are a few computer games in there (both of my other failures are computer games), and I really seem to like wallets from what one of my friends commented.

My first backed project was in Dec 18, 2009, and there were no thoughts of failure back then- I was only backing people I knew that wanted to do things.

And on that note, Kickstarter's interface for projects that you have backed sucks when you've backed as much as I have.

My oldest non-fulfilled Kickstarter that I still consider viable was funded on Jul 17, 2011.  My first failure was funded Apr 6 2012, and looking back at it, I wouldn't have backed if I were using my current rules.  But it was only $5.  And looking through, I have another failure- it was for $1.  It actually delivered, but an iOS update broke it, and the developer refunded everyone rather than deal with Apple again, and released the source.

Another interesting tidbit- I have backed only 5 unsuccessful projects (in terms of funding).  I have pulled out of quite a few... subsequent research or a re-think of whether I wanted to be involved were the causes.

Used correctly, it's a great platform.  But a lot of the crowdfunders don't know what the platform is for, and of course are understandably annoyed and verbal when their project fails.  Creating an image that I don't think is accurate, and am sure that Kickstarter doesn't want.

Living Room / Re: help with data matching
« Last post by wraith808 on December 16, 2015, 04:40 PM »
I can pull the postcodes easily, and likewise derive corresponding suburbs.  Trouble is their data doesn't necessarily match my data (and in many cases is just plain wrong)

which brings me back to the street address.  I'd be interested in how I might go about building some sort of regex tool, but given the variables I'm not sure how I would even go about it

Well, I don't know much about AU street addresses.  Which is one of the reasons I quieted down once you clarified.  Can you expound?

Until then, some general resources:

As you said this was for a company, there are several services if you have a budget for this that would probably cost less than paying you to reinvent the wheel.

A good example: https://smartystreets.com/features

I use RegExBuddy to help me build.  There's also a good library: http://www.regxlib.c...etectCookieSupport=1

A good start (but this is US Based)

Code: Text [Select]
  1. \d{1,5}\s\w.\s(\b\w*\b\s){1,2}\w*\.

(need to get mouser to add regex to the code highlighting)

This bit of RegEx allows 1-5 digits for the house number, a space, a character followed by a period (for N. or S.), 1-2 words for the street name, finished with an abbreviation (like st. or rd.).  This by no means solves your problem... it's just meant as a start.

You can also use text matching to brute force the text matches... and use the DICE coefficient to set a threshold for human intervention.  For more on that, visit: https://en.wikibooks...Dice%27s_coefficient.  There are implementation examples in several languages.

A better and more practical explanation: http://www.tsjensen....In+C+Extensions.aspx
