Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: XYplorer File Manager
« Last post by Grorgy on April 18, 2008, 03:05 AM »
thats why i only go to the developers forums as a last resort, if im choosing software i look around here to see what people are using and who is using what and why.  Then look for impartial reviews on other sites, but the hardcore support forums are always last on my list if i ever go there

I find I'm using XYplorer more and more as time goes by.  The dual panes are becoming less of an issue and I have a couple of options there if i really want to see 2 panes.

I have onenote and surfulator to replace evernote, pity to see something so good at what it did change, i havent decided which to use yet, they both seem pretty good.  Probably onenote just edges out surfulator but  mainly its just the finish of the product.  Thought I'd change now before I had too much stuff in evernote.

General Software Discussion / Re: HowTo EASILY create image backup?
« Last post by Grorgy on April 15, 2008, 05:59 PM »
I'm using paragon hard disk manager version 8 special edition (came free on a magazine)  I have backed up a couple of times using it, full 1:1 image, and I have had 1 recovery using it, and it worked perfectly.  At the price its the best thing I've seen  ;)  (I think it retails for around $USD 50)

interesting choice, exhume - 1783, from Fr. exhumer, from M.L. exhumare, from L. ex- "out of" + humare "bury," from humus "earth." An earlier form was exhumate (1548), taken directly from the M.L.  (http://www.etymonlin...ex.php?search=exhume) no latin no french we would have missed such a worthy word  ;)

DcUpdater / Re: Screenshot Captor 2.37.01??

Im using the update checker from file hippo which has introduced an option to 'skip this version'.  Which I find useful, I dont want to see more than once that some driver for my mouse has been updated to make gaming work better, but I will want to see what the next version brings.  Something like that might be useful for DCudpater.

I gotta say that after a while, dual panes becomes less of an issue.  Most of the stuff I do is easy enough with either 1 pane or 2 tabs, i dont have to see all the files in the other tab.  Saying that though I have total commander UP for when I think dual panes would be better.  and xy just gets better day by day almost anyway, at least a couple of times a week a new update.  I only get the final release usually unless i see something I really want in the interim releases, I was downloading so many xyplorers it was getting out of hand  ;D

General Software Discussion / Re: GAOTD & Virus
« Last post by Grorgy on April 07, 2008, 05:28 PM »
I find I have yearly problems with Antivirus and other security programs.  Bit defender for instance just never works for me and causes all sorts of nastiness.   People yell virus when its probably just not compatible with their setup.

ahhh ok, thanks for checking Darwin, an extra discount would have been a good thing, but i guess they have to get some income sooner or later  ;D
336
If you click on the visit the Vcom website on the autoupdate screen, after it has checked it has a little note saying to visit our new website and to use the coupon code they supply.  Its a further 35% if it will work, my computer is just hanging on it for a while then saying page can't be found.
337
well, i've been trying to get to the page where the sale starts, mainly to see if i can get both the upgrade price and the welcome to the new website discount, but the pages keep failing to load.  But if i can get it nice and cheap I might jump in, thats how I got version 6, for just a few dollars.
338
if you type in the address in the auto update it gives you a cheaper price  ;)
339
I tried it, it freezes up as soon as i start to use it, cant use its menus and the only way to get rid of it was to kill it in process explorer.

Best Dialog Extender / Re: Revisiting (XfilesDialog, File-Ex, Direct Folders)
« Last post by Grorgy on March 23, 2008, 07:14 PM »
I'd be back to Enhanced File Dialog except that the last time I tried to install it, perhaps a month ago, I could not get it to work at all, so gave up.
I know how you feel Darwin, as you know I couldn't get it to work either, anyway I've just done a reinstall of windows on both my computers and its working fine on both of them now, it is a fine little program, but not worth paying for object desktop just for it, nor is it worth reloading windows for it, there are other alternatives: I kinda like flash folder, but if it does work it must be close to the best IMO

I bought the ultimate version using the MS promotion to students.  From what I've seen so far it looks good and works well, takes me a while to find things but the things I use all seem to be there.  I ran into an initial problem with taking forever, well 10 seconds or so, to let me start typing again after going to some other program, turned out to be incompatibility with some add ins, text aloud and pdf ones, none of which I had ever used. So i disabled them and that solved that problem.

It was also quite slow to load and since its fun to clear things up sometimes, i was looking around for things I either didn't need or never used.  PS tray factory was one of those (a didn't need, I was using it) .  After I closed it word loads in about half the time (I'm mainly using a 1.5ghz Celeron M laptop with 760 mb of RAM, ohh and a HDD that spins at a liesurely 4200rpm, its adequate for my needs but was never fast)  Also outlook has become more responsive.

General Software Discussion / Re: Xobni beta - Outlook Mail indexer and organizer

Perhaps it isn't playing well with another addon, it has  only not closed outlook completely once in the 2 or so days I've been trying, but I dont use other addons, the ones I like seem too expensive for the added functionality to me and the free ones haven't offered a lot.

My outlook has closed completely most times, it never has closed every time but xobni doesnt appear to have had any effect on this behaviour.

when i delete something, i expect it to be gone.

In the brief bit of testing i've done so far, it is gone, but it still lists the file as one that has been sent to you.  So instead of saying "nooo you never sent it!!!"  you can ask for it to be resent and apologise for losing it  ;)

Yeah, I know what you mean about the conditioning Darwin, but, for the functionality I am thinking it could be worth the additional RAM, besides, I don't leave my mail on all the time when i am at Uni, and when at home its about all the laptop does, mail and IM, so its not really a problem.

I use a thing called netset from http://www.otakusoft...#featuresandbenefits  its 14.95 (i got it from Bitsdejour on the cheap)  its probably overkill for what you want, but should do it.  There are probably free options out there as well

NetSet significantly speeds up the chore of changing network settings, allowing you to:

    * Store any number of network setting profiles for each network adapter.
    * Configure DHCP, IP address, and DNS server address settings for each network profile.
    * Configure the Internet Explorer home page and Local Area Network (LAN) automatic configuration and proxy server settings for each network profile.
    * Configure the default printer for each network profile.
    * Execute a shell command after switching to a network profile.
    * Add network profiles with an easy-to-use wizard.
    * Quickly switch network profiles via a hot key or by selecting a profile from the Network Profile List.
    * Instantly display network adapter IP configuration information via a hot key.

No it was'nt me, I'm innocent!, (admit nothing, deny everything  ;) )  I liked VisageSoft, but then again what i like most about it was its price, it gives you great edting abilities and I think I paid $40 Aus for it.  It has some peculiarities with the GUI as has been noted in the PDF threads but overall, good bang for the buck.
