I guess it's the latter !  They have this warning in case you just want to recover files from C: and are about to install Easeus on the same C: hence risking making the recovering process a failure, because space used by the lost files you want to recover might be reused by the installation process.

It really happens.  My wife picked up malware that did that at myspace.  I was thankfully able to get rid of it with a combination of system restore and the free version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Right-click on deskicons.exe and select "Create Shortcut" from the popup menu. Then, right-click on the Shortcut to deskicons.exe file and choose "Properties". Go to "Shortcut" tab and set the key (e.g. Ctrl + Alt + Q) to toggle the desktop icons.

On WinXP, PlaceHolder creates a folder in Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data where settings are saved... so not portable but still a useful little tool.

Edit: ooops... forget about this one, it only hide/unhide the icons but does not solve the space issue.
