since switching to Win7, i had been using Direct Folders for this purpose. there is a free version if you want to take a look.

hmm.. the idea that a company that gets by with revenue from ads is actually going to launch a pro bono social platform for its "users". i believe the bookies stopped taking bets on this one a long time ago.

still relevant

i'm ok with PDF format but not so with Adobe's unnecessarily bulky updating mechanism. i had used Adobe Acrobat before and didn't find it a hog. however nowadays, i am using the same apps as yourself (SumatraPDF and PDF-XChange Viewer).

most of my video browsing is done on my android devices and when i am at home, i just 'cast' them on my tv instead of watching on the PC. since Adobe themselves don't support Flash on Android, it should be a wake-up call for video content providers to get themselves updated. so because of that, i am holding back from using Flash on my PC.

as i said earlier, Java is a different proposition but thanks for reminding me about the portable setup. i believe i still have your batch files from sometime ago and i will try to use them to recreate a similar setup on PCs that require java.

for some reasons, i am trying to keep Flash, Java & Adobe's PDF off my computer (more specifically out of my home network).

i am quite determined to get by without these ubiquitous trinity, therefore i am wondering if there are any methods being used by the community to do that currently.

as it stands, PDF is the easiest to replace and Flash is in the middle ground, being gradually replaced by HTML5 at most sites. however Java is a different kettle of soup/fish/tea, with it being the prerequisite for some apps/games (damn you, minecraft!). in the long run, i am thinking of a sand-boxed version of java being made available just for those software that requires it.

with my weak google-fu, i could only find this article - http://www.pcworld.c...eader-and-flash.html

sorry about the burnt electronic equipments, i too recently lost a modem and router to a lightning.

but thanks for the read, i love to read about these kind of home network set-ups. :up:

powerline/homeplug adapters are something that i am interested in but haven't invested in any. also thanks for the product links, they come in handy when it comes to the specs.

note: links for these two seem to be broken.

i turned it off since i already have an alternative screenshot uploading method. this could be more useful with some fine-tuning.

Yes, thanks for getting that link. I referred to the Chrome/Chromium extension in my opening post, but I had not trialled it. Actually, I went to trial it before making the post, but then abandoned it when I read:
...Old Compose is free, but it requires you to share the link on Twitter or Facebook before you get the download. ...
Not with a 10-foot bargepole.

that article on LH must be outdated because now they also require an email address to download.. ;D

try it like this:

Code: Text [Select]
  1. "C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --user-data-dir="D:\Software\Chrome Default" -- "$$1"

works here on my Chromium.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Taking a screenshot of Steam client

actually, %nicename% is the whole of highlighted blue text. i tried several times and they all return the same lengthy name.

i also looked up the Steam processes in process explorer and i found 2 of them, pics as below
Process Explorer_2013-09-25_00003.png

and here are the results of different fields that i tested on Steam client.

My Default Template: %quickfield%%nicename%_%customdate%_%num% (Note: customdate is as following %Y-%m-%d)

Tested fields:
windowtitlepure = Steam
windowtitle = Steam
filename = Steam
nicename = Steam Client Bootstrapper (Steam Client Bootstrapper (buildbot_winslave04_steam_steam_rel_client_win32@winslave04)) [Steam]
fullfilename = C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\Steam.exe
productname = Steam Client Bootstrapper

ever since it was introduced, i had always used the %nicename% field in my file-naming template section. however recently when i took a screenshot of the Steam client, i noticed that Steam had somehow messed up in naming its interface and the following is returned when i use %nicename% field:

Steam Client Bootstrapper (Steam Client Bootstrapper (buildbot_winslave04_steam_steam_rel_client_win32@winslave04)) [Steam]

with that the filename becomes unnecessarily lengthy. i was weighing up my options and they are as follows:

1. use another field like %windowtitle% instead of %nicename% but that would be a global change.
2. use the post-capture command-line tool option to run a script that truncates the excessive parts.
3. to post here so that i can dawdle over my coffee while mouser comes up with a response.

so over to you, mouser.. :D

i remember this game from its previous incarnation. cool time-killer while waiting for the bus. :up:

btw, apk download only leads to an embedded unity-player page. am i missing something?
346
Thanks for the clarification.  I'm quite puzzled as to how that might have happened -- haven't seen that sort of behavior here.  I hope I can reproduce this reliably at some point...

That's the version of Aldiko I tried to reproduce with...unfortunately, no luck so far.

If you don't mind sharing the info, is your version of Andrroid pre-4.1.x?

i don't mind at all, here's a screenie.
Spoiler

since it only happened once, maybe some other apps that were running in the background caused it.
347
When you say "went on a loop of re-launching", do you mean that when you invoked Again once, it tried to re-launch multiple times?

BTW, what version of Aldiko are you using?

there was a prompt saying that 'Again' has stopped working and when i pressed the 'ok' button, the previously launched apps were launched one after another. in hindsight, should have read the contents of the crash message.

as for aldiko, i am using version 2.2.3
348
just want to report a little incident.. after accidentally exiting Aldiko, i tapped on 'Again' to launch Aldiko. however 'Again' crashed and went on a loop of re-launching 7-8 previously launched apps. i assume 'Again' reads from a saved list of previously opened apps. is there a way to reduce this cache?

since we're running up blind alleys, perhaps it's best to do a system restore and see if it helps.
