By the way, are you able to explain? As I wrote above "I still don't know what the "motion elements" and the accompanying little symbols were referring to, in the picture.".
I have to ask - what were they?       (Enquiring minds need to know.)

I have no idea.  I just searched google images and they were the most "cubey" ice that did not come in an ice cube tray, that I could find.  Google must just scrape sites for images.  I would not have a clue how to trace it to the origin.  It does sound like they are moving the mountain to Muhammed.  Weird though.  Searching that phrase I get this jazz about if the mountain will not come to Muhammed, then Muhammed must go to the mountain. I always remember hearing it the other way around.  If you can't get Muhammed to the mountain then move the mountain to Muhammed.  Seems like more revisionist data on internet.  :)

I saw the cube/cubicle bit, but that seemed a kinda obvious and awkward pun

No pun is obvious, awkward, or stinky enough to escape being pressed into service when the need arises.  :)

Begin Edit:

"...when they moved us from 2 man offices to the cubicles..." and I thought that could have thus been referring to something that immediately pre-dated office cubicles in the US and that was beyond my ken (I saw nothing special/unusual in 2-man offices).

I can see the logic here.  No, I only worked at IBM as a contractor for a few years.  It was just that our group got moved around among the buildings from time to time.  The building with the 2 man offices was across the road from the main building.  The main building had a large area full of cubicles.  When they moved us over there we were in the cubes.  Being the last one to move since I wanted to finish the stuff I was working on before shutting down my PC, I ended up with the cube nobody wanted.  Right outside the manager's office door.  But it worked to my advantage.  I only lived about 7 minutes down the street.  I liked to get in early and grab coffee in the cafeteria.  So when the manager got into work every day he could not miss the fact I was the only one in the group there working.  I left a bit early too but it still left the good impression with the boss.

End Edit

It is funny how the mind works though.  I find myself often trying to fathom something when everyone else listening has digested the speaker's comments and moved on.  Looking for subtlety can be dangerous.  One has to hear "DUH"  a lot from witnesses to the mind whiff.  :)  But I think it ads to the genius mystique.  If I don't have a clue what is happening it must be due to the fact my mind is amusing itself by searching for the sublime.  At least that's how I try to play it off.  :)

The ice block pics I used were the closest thing I could find to a cube without using pictures of actual ice cubes.  I probably should have attempted making an icicle out of one picture of an ice cube pasted and iteratively downsized and concatenated.  But the result could have been even more nebulous.  I did think though, that if anyone got my drift it would be cranioscopical.  He can find a pun even if there isn't one.  :)

I just checked Wiki.  Quite an interesting spread of publications from the man.  Not to mention them naming an automobile after him!  :)

I was trying to go for "cubicle" with the pic.  Unfortunately I'm not a photoshop kind of guy to do it myself.  :)

That reminds me.. when they moved us from 2 man offices to the cubicles I told the Team Leader(tm) that they weren't taking the principle far enough.  What should happen is each worker be issued a golf cart type of battery powered gizmo.  The desk, PCs, and all that is incorporated.  All that's needed to change to another venue is to drive up to a plug-in station.  There is a modular connector with all power, network and phone connections.  The individual just drives up and plugs in.  No "hitting the ground running" as (s)he is already "on a roll" as soon as reporting for work.  The Team Leader enjoyed my scenario.  The guy definitely had a sense of humor.  :)

General Software Discussion / Revo Uninstaller Free bugfix release (2.0.3)
« Last post by MilesAhead on April 04, 2017, 12:26 PM »
Revo Uninstaller Free has released a bugfix update.  Version 2.0.3.  The last release was nearly four months ago so it may be a good idea to download the new one.  Here is the version history

It says "minor bugs" fixed.  But still, it doesn't cost anything to update.  :)

Edit: Btw, I was looking around to see if the Pro version was on giveaway anywhere.  I had the free version 2.0.2 installed and noticed the update.

What's even more impressive - it says, of the day, so they must change the code daily.

Either that or the free drink changes with the day of the week?  :)

Since it says your_drink, I was assuming that you got the first of whatever you drink free, or else you can't solve it with what's on the sign.

I have to agree something that can't be solved is a bad sign.  Especially if it is a sign.  :)

When I was in high school I got a kick out of reading a satirical scifi novel When They Come From Space by Mark Clifton.  They wanted $10 for it on Amazon but I found it on Kobo DRM-free for $2.99.  I will likely start reading it again later this afternoon.  It was published in 1962 so it will be interesting to see if it feels dated now.  Especially since the Cold War(tm) is over.  :)

Edit:  I finished the book today. It still has its bite.  The main thing dated in the story is the necessity to get a "long distance operator" to make the connection for you for long distance calls.  :)

While MSE is still my favorite, it's no angel. It FP'd on me a few weeks back on a copy of f0dder's FSekrit I'd been using for years on 5 different machines.

In AHK a standard technique for remapping keys is to check for some condition, then if it doesn't apply resend the same keystrokes.  To avoid an infinite loop a keyboard hook is used to detect when the key combination is actually coming from the hardware.  That alone is enough to trigger many of these AV scanners as detecting a key logger.  My hope is that the situation will become so ridiculous that the invalidity of the whole concept of AV will filter down to the typical computer users.  So far I have not seen any formula posted how many good scans it takes to offset one bad scan.  If you line up hundreds of scanners there's bound to be a bad scan in there somewhere.

Maintenance on the machine is becoming the primary purpose of the machine it seems.  Get your computing in using one hour per day because the other waking hours will be consumed maintaining the system.  :)

Just installed the Giveaway version.  Thanks for the tip.  Do you favor the registry cleaner because it's less likely to do damage like CCleaner's?
-Midnight Rambler (March 28, 2017, 10:15 AM)

I more or less took a shot with the Registry Cleaner because I had Tweaking.com Registry Backups.  They use the VSS service to back up all the hives even though Windows is running.  So I thought I could try it without taking too much of a chance.  Turns out on reading the Tweaking restore instructions I have to go into Safe Mode, and I don't think this open box Laptop will do that anymore.  But the Wise Registry Cleaner itself automatically makes a backup so I wasn't totally without a parachute.

I figure it must do a pretty good job of finding dead references because it always seems to find at least 160 things it wants to fix in the registry.  Glary Utilities, which I also have, is a Registry Repair.  Typically a scan will find zero or one errors.

But from memory I would guess the Wise cleaner is on a par with the CCleaner Registry module.  One of these days I have to try to figure out why this beast does not want to boot into safe mode.  Edit: No biggie.  Turns out I just had to hold down F8 on the built-in keyboard.  The F8 on the USB keyboard doesn't work right at the start of the boot.  One problem solved.  :)

Or just byte the bullet and toss it.  I should get a lightweight detachable keyboard touch screen type PC with Windows 10 on it to tide me over until I have a desk to put a desktop on again.  :)

Also I do have to admit I like the display.  The categories it cleans are in a nice table so you have a clear idea what kind of stuff it wants to cut out.  But for those who enjoy getting freeware that does the job well I think I would recommend the Wise Disk Cleaner Portable and Wise Registry Cleaner Portable programs.  They should be fine for running from a thumb drive and they are updated as frequently as the Pro version afaict from casual observation.

Sorry for the long-winded response.  I am just sort of thinking out loud.  :)

Well of course when I tried to report the false positive they won't let me -- I have to fill in detailed information proving I own OfficeScan, etc.

These security services should be run out of town the way they handle this stuff..

Pretty soon there will be like 80,000 scan apps available.  If you don't pay the vig to the scanning site they will submit your program/file/site/whatever to consecutive scans until they get a bad one to point to.  It seems like the trend is to get everyone to spend all their time treading water.  There's no "progress" anymore.  Just survival for another day.

Found Deals and Discounts / Wise Care 365 Pro [softpedia giveaway]
« Last post by MilesAhead on March 27, 2017, 06:59 AM »
Wise Care 365 Pro is available for download as a Softpedia Giveaway

There is no time limit on the license but there are no free upgrades either.

The main feature I use is the Registry Cleaner.  To be honest I am not sure which features are in the Pro that are not in the Free version.  Free is likely fine for most people.  But it can be kind of fun to get the Pro of any software if it is on giveaway.  :)

I finally saw Shin Godzilla

I really enjoyed it.  It broke the mold for Toho G flicks.  The ending seemed to beg for a sequel.  It will be fun if they follow it up.  Twelve years is too long between "episodes" though.  Toho has to learn it must toe the line by keeping us supplied with Tokyo stomping special effects.  :)

Non-Windows Software / Re: Android: (Wired) File Transfers from PC

I found this page on Addictive Tips how to set default USB transfer type in Marshmallow:
http://www.addictive...type-in-android-6-0/

It would not let me change it to the USB Ethernet setting.  But I was able to set it to MTP rather than PTP.  Now when I plug it into my Windows Laptop it shows as a media player rather than just an MP3 player.  In any case TeraCopy seems to have no issue with transfers at USB 2.0 speeds.

I got a note from the developer that my GOTD license code would work now.  Sure enough it accepted it and the CPU Affinity setting can be enabled.  I turned it on accepting the defaults.  I'll see if I notice any difference.

General Software Discussion / Re: Adobe Acrobat

Hi all.
I cannot open my .pdf format document in Adobe Acrobat. I am getting this error: Adobe Acrobat cannot be used to read pdf files.
Is there a way to open pdf file??
Any help you anyone can provide would be great.

In File Explorer right click on the PDF file, then select "Open With..." and see what is in the list.  If Adobe is in the list, click it.

But I think in any case I would get MalwareBytes free version 2 and scan your PC.
Seems like prankware got on your system.

« Last post by MilesAhead on March 18, 2017, 07:17 AM »
I've found on a laptop I have that it will occasionally get stuck on the spinning dots screen after an update. A solution that almost always clears things up for me is to shut down, remove all USB devices from the machine (the only one I have in this machine is a wireless mouse dongle), and boot it up. The machine boots up relatively quickly and then I can plug in the USB devices again, and all is well until the next update breaks it.

Isn't it wonderful we have these time-saving devices called Windows PCs?  It will get to the point where you spend 6 hours a day on doing what MS pushes on you and 2 hours a day doing "your stuff."  To me the trend started with Vista pre-SP1 where the machine tried to hog the HD to index stuff, add stuff to WMP library(which I did not use as a player anyway) and just send you an email when it was OK to take a turn using your own machine.  The day of "pay per RPC" is not far off.

As it turns out the email I got back from the GOTD promotion seemed to indicate I did not need to activate it.  Merely install.  So I missed the activation window.  I contacted the software publisher and apparently the same thing happened to many others.

So if you downloaded it and had an issue with it refusing to activate I suggest going to the publisher's site and pushing the Green Help Button.  I did so and explained the situation.  I got an email from the author saying a new GOTD type key would be generated to enable the Pro feature for those in the same predicament.

So far it seems to work quite well without the "affinity change" feature.  But I am curious to try that out.

Developer's Corner / Re: Do you use a good office chair when programming?
« Last post by MilesAhead on March 17, 2017, 08:32 AM »
When I worked at IBM they bought a bunch of office chairs that looked like this one:

I am not sure if it is the exact model.  But I remember the manufacturer also made gas shocks for automobiles.  I used the chair for close to a year and never ran into the issue where the seat could not be adjusted high enough because the gas shock failed.  I found the exact same chair on sale at Office Max for $40.  The only thing with it was, the "cloth" upholstery was nylon and wore like iron.  Never wears out but not a good idea to sit in the chair in shorts unless you stuck a pad or cushion on it to keep your skin from being sanded off your legs.  :)

Great chair for cheap money.  The chair you mentioned is the same type they have at the college here.  All kinds of adjustments for the armrests etc..  It takes me 2 or 3 minutes to adjust everything before I can address the PC.  I found the armless model simpler.  Hit the lever to adjust the height and you are done.  :)

Edit:  I am cheap and love to get a bargain.  I think I bought this swivel chair in the mid 90s.  I used it up to the day I was evicted in Feb. 2013.  Even then to look at it you would think it has not been used.  I got my $40 worth!  :)
