Mouser's Zone / Re: New policy - separate beta and stable versions
« Last post by mouser on May 10, 2006, 05:00 AM »
another new policy i am going to try to follow:

i will not feel compelled to do full real updates of the help file with beta releases,
but i will make a solid attempt from now on to have full stable version releases include an up-to-date help file.

it seems to me that if we expect to earn a reputation of top quality software, our help files should be up to date.

Living Room / KPL - Kids Programming Language
« Last post by mouser on May 10, 2006, 12:20 AM »
This sounds really great if you have kids - looks like they spent a lot of time getting this easy to use and smooth.
And it's donation based? nice!

What is KPL?

KPL stands for Kid’s Programming Language. KPL makes it easy for kids to learn computer programming. KPL makes it fun, too, by making it especially easy to program computer games, with cool graphics and sound.

Can I learn to program?

If you are using a computer to read this on the Web, you can certainly learn to program! Programming is really good exercise for your brain, too.  The skills you already have that you will let you learn to program are reading and typing and math. As you learn to program with KPL, you will also learn something called ‘computer logic.’

A computer program is simply a series of instructions to the computer. Computers are very good at following instructions, but they must be told what to do very precisely, and using logic that the computer understands.  When you learn KPL, you are learning how to do that. When you learn KPL, you are learning how to make a computer do anything you want it to do – including play games!

KPL is for games?
We invented KPL because we think learning is best when learning is fun. And the whole point of games is fun, of course! It’s also true that playing games is the thing that computers are used for more than anything else in the world. Computer graphics and computer sound make for some very fun games!

Because we were thinking about these things, we designed KPL to make it easy to program computer games.  So it’s easy for you to make computer games yourself! KPL is not only for programming games – it’s for learning other things, too. But learning is best when learning is fun, right?

Show me some games!
KPL comes with several games, some of which we will show you below. Note that these are games you can play, but that they are also KPL programs which you can read, learn from, and change. The idea is for you to make your own games – but these fun examples will help you do that!

ProcessTamer / idea for new feature: rescue hotkey
« Last post by mouser on May 09, 2006, 11:25 PM »
so i'm thinking of adding a global hotkey that would:
  • reduce any process using more than say 20% of cpu to low priority.
  • boost priority of process tamer to high.
  • display list of running processes for further manipulation and termination.

the idea of this would be that some people might not normally want to be taming processes; and this would be a key you could use in an emergency to regain control of your system on demand by pushing PT up to high priority so it should be able to beat out any currently ill-behaving process.

ProcessTamer / Re: Process Tamer usage tip
« Last post by mouser on May 09, 2006, 11:22 PM »
perfect timing - i was just about to release a new version when i saw this post and decided it would be a nice feature to add to make it easier for users to choose to run in this way.  so the new beta includes an option to run at high priority :)

thanks for the tip!

ProcessTamer / Re: LATEST VERSION INFO THREAD - v2.05.01 - May 9th, 2006
« Last post by mouser on May 09, 2006, 11:19 PM »
Ok,

Keeping with the new policy, i have released the new version as a beta with both last stable version and current beta available for download.

The new version has some nice features, most of which have been requested by users, including better control over which messages you want to see, and some interesting foreground boosting options (you can choose to always boost the foreground process to high priority, or just to always keep foreground process from being tamed; make a rule to ignore an app if you want to exclude this behavior for a given app).

i've also added an option that lets you tell process tamer itself to always run at high priority which can be useful if you have apps that sometimes uses so much cpu that you can't get control of it (thanks eFotografo for the tip: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3563.0).

Screenshot of new version:

note:
if you check both "boost foreground" and "protect foreground" then you could end up in a very counter-productive situation where the foreground app is out of control and is given HIGH priority instead of being decreased in priority - which would make the situation worse.  Having both checked would really only make sense in some rare cases.  But having only one of these checked will avoid this.

jukla i hope you will stick around for the v2 discussions..
you've got some interesting ideas and i'm understanding some but not all - but they definitely seem like exactly the things we are trying to figure out for v2.  part of the reason v2 is still in waiting is that i feel we are still trying to get our mind grasped around a consistent solution to the main issues that can make v2 something on a truly higher level of operation.
31762
brilliant idea - i hope someone figures out how to do this.
31763
good idea Roman, I will add it.
31764
love the idea..
does it already exist i wonder?

i know that seedling has made recently an mp3 tool on this site(random mixtape maker), so maybe this is a good task for him if it doesn't exist already.
31765
you really just need to leave url snooper running - it doesn't have any special batch processing (though i could add it if people wanted it).

then open each of those pages one at a time in a browser or in another program and let url snooper work in the background.

keep in mind there are some very good "spidering" programs (offline explorer, teleport pro, blackwidow, etc.) that are designed to find all the normal urls and pages on a site.  url snooper is specially designed for sniffing live traffic to discover things like hidden multimedia streaming audio/video urls.
31766
can you be a little more specific about what you want to do?
31767
just click a litttle smiley and the text version of it appears in the editor; it will be converted to the smiley when you preview or submit.

this is a good idea i think..
with line numbering also.

what i think would be nice would be

[pastebin=php]
blah blah php code
[/pastebin]

or

[pastebin=c++]
blah blah c++ code
[/pastebin]

i think to make a programming section on simplemachine.org forum extensions so you programmers can start helping to write extensions to this forum :)

i'll put it on the todo like i think it's a very good idea.

The DonationCoder.com has a lot of different content..
In addition to the forum there is the reviews, software, specials and discounts, contests, podcasts, some articles, help pages, etc.
Then on the forum itself we have the programming school, review commentaries, etc.

It's a lot of information and i don't think we're doing the best job of presenting it..
Furthermore, it's not the easiest thing to maintain.

I keep looking at CMS systems but not found anything perfect yet.

I'm looking for inspiration from other sites that do a nice job of cleanly and simply organizing a lot of content in an easy-to-navigate way.  Simplicity of presentation is a key desire - rather than an overwhelming swarm of information all crammed on one page..

Suggestions?  Favorite sites that do a good job?

i monitor lots of forums with website watcher.

In general you just have to set the properties to use your normal web cookies - not need to do any advanced logging in (assuming you are normally recognized on the forum).

usually the only slightly tricky part is setting the strings to pay attention to and ignore in order to only detect new posts.

Developer's Corner / IDE for Ruby on Rails
« Last post by mouser on May 07, 2006, 09:44 PM »
This is an eclipse-based ide for Ruby on Rails (the framework for Ruby that helps build websites).
Haven't tried it but it looks interesting.

RadRails is an integrated development environment for the Ruby on Rails framework. The goal of this project is to provide Rails developers with everything they need to develop, manage, test and deploy their applications. Features include source control, debugging, WEBrick servers, generator wizards, syntax highlighting, data tools and much much more.
The RadRails IDE is built on the Eclipse RCP, and includes the Subclipse plug-in and the RDT plug-ins. The RadRails tools are also available as Eclipse plug-ins.

Living Room / More free audiobooks - from Project Gutenberg
« Last post by mouser on May 07, 2006, 09:34 PM »
Project Gutenberg makes audio eBooks available for some of the same great literature available in plain text. Thanks to Mike Eschman for most computer-generated eBooks, to AudioBooksForFree.com for our Arthur Conan Doyle series of human readings, and to LiteralSystems.org for work on new readings by volunteers. We are also working with Librivox, with a similar effort to get people volunteering to read. Please consider joining them!
Our listings are divided into two categories. We are still adding new audio eBooks read by people, primarily through work by LiteralSystems.org and Librivox. However, we have stopped adding computer-generated eBooks. Instead, we are working on methods to automatically make computer-generated eBooks on demand (that is, by choosing options, then getting the file within a short time).

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: HTML Organizer/Viewer
« Last post by mouser on May 07, 2006, 02:47 PM »
i understand what he wants, and it makes some sense.
he wants the program to be able to bookmark and refer to LOCALLY stored files.

in other words he wants the pages and files to be left alone on his local disk where he can manipulate them as normal files; and just let the manager program work with them there instead of trying to repack them in its own format.

im actually a bit interested in what you might find for this so i hope you'll keep us informed if you find something that works.  this is sort of relevant to the discussions we've had about note taking apps - and the issue of how data is best stored.

Living Room / Re: Which CMS System does Donationcoder use?
« Last post by mouser on May 07, 2006, 02:44 PM »
we are currently using the smf forum system (www.simplemachines.org), and no cms for the other pages (just some handcoded php for some stuff).

i have been flirting with the idea of converting the main pages to a cms (mambo, drupal, tinyportal), but can't make up my mind about which..
