So... I waited another year ... When they decided to repeat the same friggin stunt, again...and raised the drinking age to 21. Needless to say, I was pissed.
So, you really hadn't waited at all  ;D

Compare "apple products" sold in applestore and "windows products" sold in any random computer shop.

I don't think that's a fair comparison.  This is true art that one person in a million has the skill to develop and true artistry like none other.  To compare that to popcorn technology is not quite an apt comparison in my opinion.

Definitely not an apples to apples comparison.

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

  - when you can drink (legally)

That one's highly overrated. :P

Not if you gotta do it 3 friggin times it ain't!

Back when I was growing up, the drinking age was 18. That was the target, and we all waited for it. However... Two weeks, before my 18th birthday, the state legislature raised the drinking age to 19. Hence I did not get "Grandfathered in".

So... I waited another year ... When they decided to repeat the same friggin stunt, again...and raised the drinking age to 21. Needless to say, I was pissed.

Mind you, I had started drinking in bars back when I was 16 ... So this was seriously over complicating my evenings having to duck the fuzz every friggin 5 minutes when they decided to (yet again...) raid my favorite bar..

Since I'm usually a fairly calm individual - and feel that way - I suspect I've become a master at subconsciously pushing it all down. And it's now reaching critical mass.

Have you started getting annoyed by people asking you how you stay so calm yet? I've found that that is the first sign that Stoic needs a vacation before somebody gets hurt. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Best Windows 7 desktop background changer?
« Last post by Stoic Joker on January 25, 2012, 04:30 PM »
I'm looking for Win7 software, preferably freeware, that can randomly choose desktop background images from a directory (and its subdirectories), stretch the image to fill the screen if necessary, and change the desktop background image every X seconds.

Um... Windows 7 already does that natively. You can go as low/fast as changing the WP every 10 seconds if you like.

Ya know... The more privacy issues that crop up around this target advertising thing ... The more I realize that the 80s tampon commercials weren't nearly as annoying as I'd thought.

Actually, they were less annoying than the ones today.  They stated their point, and you winced and it was over.  The ones today, you can watch the whole commercial and have no idea of what you were watching until later it goes off while you're doing something else.  And those delayed winces can happen at bad times...

Amen to that! Most of the advertising these days leaves you sitting there wondering WTF was that all about? No name, logo, or product mentioned...just a big gush of fan fair about some wondrously unspecified mystery thing.

Quick! Run out and buy a damnifiknow ... Why??!?

Do you know anyone who has had to dig inside one of these AIO's?

Yeah, me. And you don't want to. However we do have some of the HP (310-1124f) TouchSmart AIOs here at the office. We got them refurbed for like $500 each. and much as I'd planned on hating them - I fought Against using them for months - They really aren't that bad. I've got one of the 22" ones on the test bench running Windows 8 ... And it's doing a fine job of it.

I'm just dreading the day I have to crack the case as the last one I worked on was a total nightmare to even get into the thing. It actually took two people and a full day to change the F'ing video card.

Living Room / Re: SOPA Shelved - ACTA is Worse
« Last post by Stoic Joker on January 25, 2012, 11:31 AM »
The internet seems to ignore legislation until somebody tries to take something away from us... then we carefully defend that one thing and never counter-attack. Then the other side says, "OK, compromise," and gets half of what they want. That's not the way to win... that's the way to see a steady and continuous erosion of rights online.

The solution is to start lobbying for our own laws. It's time to go on the offensive if we want to preserve what we've got. Let's force the RIAA and MPAA to use up all their political clout just protecting what they have.

Now that's brilliant! All we need is a small hoard of (mildly psychotic) legal types to start flooding them with a constant barrage of "legal" bullshit, and it'll be like hitting them with a courtroom based DoS attack.

So on the FF detection front. It does seem that coordinating an attack by a user-base that's on a global network, would require one to specify a time zone. Not to mention, that it would also help immensely if they had specified a time that actually existed (12:00am does not).

AM = Anti Meridian (before noon)
12:00 = Noon...
Pm = Post Meridian (after noon)

News Flash. SOPA is a Zombie!

Not only a zombie, but a zombie that has children...

Déjà Vu in the form of OPEN -- The New Anti-Piracy Bill

As an alternative to SOPA-PIPA, Representative Darrell Issa (CA-R), and 24 co-sponsors introduced the Online Protection and Enforcement of Digital Trade (OPEN) H.R. 3782 on Wednesday, during the Internet blackout.

OPEN Huh? Is that as in OPEN your butt cheeks and let the fist shine in??

Short version of that is one of my favorite sayings: History is written by the victor.
Though it is a bit off-topic, I have to point out two things, lest we forget:
(a) That the history then seems to get forgotten if it is not taught in schools.
(b) That the general truth of your statement doesn't seem to have stopped various Fascist or police states from attempting to rewrite the history that shows what they have done in the name of their religio-political ideologies.

I never said it wasn't an ongoing battle... ;)

If someone is making half the money that I am and is battling with the cab driver, I am mentally far more patient with it than with the other girl.  Is that fair of me?  No.  But it's right.

Damn Straight! Back in the day when things were really tight, I'd fight tooth and nail for every dime. Now it's just simpler to pay it and get on with my day. I'm not rich by any standards...but I'm not in a constant and total bind either. So I do my part to "Share-the-wealth" by not being a dick about nickels.

O_o Damn! Her posture was way off (e.g. destined to fail); leaned way back like she was modeling on a runway. Lean into the friggin thing for Christ sake! Good thing it wasn't a Barret 50 cal ... She'd have taken out a few satellites and the ISS.

Scampering back OT for a moment... ;)

I definitely going to have to go with a hardware compatibility issue on the array (which is holding for the moment). I took the second "failed" drive to the office and ran a diag on it.

WD diag said all is good short & long tests.
DBAN burned the drive - DoD Short 3 pass.
WD diag said all is good short & long tests.

But the RAID Array wouldn't tolerate it for shizel... *Shrug* ...This could be a trilogy.

Zoiks! That's a hell of a round. But I'd rather the hollow-point, as they're designed to frag and stop in the first target. It's safer for the Innocent bystanders that way. Chances are you'll have to asses the field of fire in a split second, so it's best not to take chances with overkill.

Perhaps I should have pointed out that the second, (12g - causes very large recoil and makes a really big mess of things ;D ), doesn't go in the first, (1851 Navy Colt - lot of fun, bit slow to reload).

Understood. I recognized the antique black powder/ball ammo revolver. I'd thought that the Navy Colt had a back strap over the cylinder ...(So was thinking Colt Dragoon)... But I'm not that up on with the older stuff. *Shrug*

My brother is a big fan of the solid loads/slugs in a 12g (e.g. I'm familiar with the recoil). Me I tend to think of the shotgun as a mid-range coverage weapon (with 00 buckshot). I carry on a regular basis...so I tend to (must) be/stay mindful of the repercussions that certain choices can have. :)

Hay me too! Happy day we were trying to ignore. :)
