Living Room / Re: Darwinism + geneticism +walkers = The Walking Zed!
« Last post by Deozaan on February 11, 2015, 01:36 AM »
NECRO THREAD, ARISE FROM YOUR GRAVE!

I recently came across this, from the same guy who did the first one.

How is the score calculated?
In order to promote upright walking, each creature receives points based on how high the head is in relation to its feet, and how much it advances while upright. Bonus points are given for each proper step forward.

I don't find it nearly as fun to watch as the genetic cars, but it's still pretty spiffy.

As an aside, after playing around with the Genetic Cars again, I was unsatisfied with how some things worked. I saw that the source was available, so I've been referring to it to make something similar in Unity. Here are some screenshots of my progress (click to embiggen):

Here's one of my earliest screenshots after getting the basic (though still somewhat incomplete) car generation working:

Screenshot - 15-02-09, 21-20-54.png

Here's one that wins the award for BEST PROCEDURALLY CREATED CAR EVAR!!!!111:

Screenshot - 15-02-10, 19-07-38.png

And here's a rather sporty little car that was doing great compared to its peers, but my timing on the screenshot was poor. It's doing a little nosedive after coming down off a hill:

Yup, once you buy something on the Play Store, it's yours forever.
Thanks for the confirmation!  :)

There are some possible exceptions: Consumable in-app purchases (IAPs)
Consumables?  Please can you give an example?

This is probably only a "feature" in games. For an example I'm making up as I go along: Some games let you pay $1 for 500 in-game gold coins. And you can keep paying $1 as many times as you want to get 500 more gold coins. Obviously, since you can spend the 500 gold coins in-game, you can't buy them once and keep them forever. They're not permanent, so they allow you to keep buying them repeatedly.

These consumables come in the form of in-game currency, temporary power-ups, and other similar things.

Couldn't you use one of the password-protection apps, like Asus' own App Locker that was supplied with my Asus tablet, to prevent easy, casual snooping?

Is this available for phones, too? All phones, regardless of OS? And would it still allow an officer easy access to the e-documents he would need access to? And would an officer want to give you the time needed to activate it, before handing him the phone?

Android Lollipop has an app locking feature which allows you to require the device to be unlocked for people to change apps from the currently open app. I always thought of it as a "kid mode" so that you can hand off your tablet/phone to your children with a drawing app open and keep them from messing anything else up, but I guess it would work here, too.

EDIT: It's quick and easy to activate, too. It just takes a couple of taps and the current app is locked.

Is it really hacking when you own it?

Good question. But an even better one would be "Do you actually own it?"

It was meant more of a tongue-in-cheek jab at "Government Motors" since the whole GM buyout/too-big-to-fail fiasco a few years back.

I think it's just cell-shaded 3D models from Poser or something like that.

Thx. Learn something new every day. :)

It should be noted that I am not certain about how the video was made. I was just sharing my opinion based on what I saw. My conclusions could be wrong. :)

@SB! I really really like the look of that animation. Almost a noir vibe don't you think? Did they rotoscope it? Or are they working off 3D models? (It looks rotoscoped.)

Great music too!

The movement seems too off for rotoscoping to me. I think it's just cell-shaded 3D models from Poser or something like that.

I say if you willingly hand your phone to a police officer, you should assume that he will snoop through it. But as long as it's just an option, and not required, then I don't mind the choice being there.

This is an ad for Android, but it's also a pretty good Animal Friends video:

eleman beat me to it. I have purchased apps on the Google Play store once and have been able to use the purchases on both my phone and my tablet simultaneously.
Just to be perfectly clear; does that mean that if I uninstall a utility purchased through the Google Play Store, either through the Play Store itself or via Settings, I can come back at some later date and reinstall it without further payment?

Yup, once you buy something on the Play Store, it's yours forever.

There are some possible exceptions: Consumable in-app purchases (IAPs) and subscriptions (which I believe also count as a form of IAP).

@Deo - like it even if it drifts dangerously close to hip-hop in places. She reminds me a little bit of Blossom Dearie with her vocal styling. Be fun to hear her with a real big band.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of rap or hip-hop in general. That said, I'm occasionally OK with things that are close to it if mixed well with something else I enjoy. Though, to the best of my memory, "Back It Up" is the only song that has anything close to hip-hop on that album. (Though I've been told I have a poor idea of what exactly constitutes hip-hop.)

Here's another one from Caro Emerald:

Windows 10 for RPi 2 isn't what people think it will be. From what I've heard, it will essentially turn the device into an Arduino with an MS-DOS prompt. You wouldn't want to use it for anything other than development testing anyway.

Living Room / Re: wierd mouse click problem
« Last post by Deozaan on February 05, 2015, 01:08 PM »
Sounds like a common problem I've experienced with Logitech mice. Eventually the clicker wears out and starts double-clicking occasionally when you only click once.

That was my first thought too, but I don't think it's just Logitech that is susceptible to this behavior. I've had several different brands of mice (granted mostly MS, but there were others), and all of them died the exact same - ^this - way.

I figured it probably wasn't unique to Logitech, but they're the only brand I've used for the past 15 years or so. That is, until I bought my most recent replacement last year. Now I'm using a barebones $7 Amazon Basics mouse. I decided that if this one fails after a short amount of time, it will be much easier to replace than my $60 mouse I was using before.

That said, you can buy replacement parts and solder them into your mouse. If you're up for that kind of thing. :) You can buy a bundle of them for a few bucks on eBay.

How about some Caro Emerald?

She's got an interesting mix of 20s-40s swing, jazz, and big band(?), along with some modern elements. I'm personally not a fan of swing, and I especially don't care much for jazz, but I really like this stuff:

Every Logitech mouse I've owned in the past 10-15 years has eventually experienced this issue. One mouse started exhibiting this kind of behavior after only a couple of weeks!

I'd love Logitech if their hardware didn't wear out in 1-3 years.  >:(

^ Ok, now that's hilarious!  Reminds me of the newlywed show episode where they were asked "Where have you wanted to make whoopie that you've not had the chance."  Of course, the answer was supposed to be a place... but one of the wives said "In the butt".  Hilarity ensued.

Or your own little render farm in the cloud. (c:

Living Room / Re: Raspberry Pi's $35 Linux PC
« Last post by Deozaan on February 03, 2015, 10:24 PM »
The Raspberry Pi isn't a tablet. It's a little credit card sized computer board (without a case). You have to provide your own keyboard, mouse, monitor, wifi, SD card, HDD, etc., if you want those things.

Also, the architecture (for Pi 2) is ARMv7, as opposed to x86 (or x86_64), which means you can't run Windows on it. And even though the Pi 2 will have some stripped down version of Windows 10 available for it, I suspect it won't be what you might think, (e.g., you probably won't be able to run any .exe file on it like you'd want to).

But if you were to install a flavor of Linux on something like the $35 ODROID-C1 (Quad core 1.5Ghz, 1GB RAM) you just might have a nice little portable computer replacement.

General Software Discussion / Re: how do I disable FF Synch or whatever it is?
« Last post by Deozaan on February 03, 2015, 10:05 PM »
I've found that Firefox Portable will still use the default Firefox profile location. Meaning it doesn't matter how many copies you make of it, they're all using the same profile on your computer. I found this out when I downloaded Firefox Developer Edition Portable and it wouldn't run while I had Firefox Portable also running, because "the profile was in use."

(see attachment in previous post)
The $35 credit card sized computer just got much faster

The article says it will be able to use a version of Windows 10 from Microsoft. Would this ruin it?

Just for reference, this was mentioned in this post:

Raspberry Pi 2 out now; includes support for Windows 10

The Windows 10 that runs on it will be very much stripped down. Not at all what regular folk are used to, methinks.

Arrgh, why can't I delete my own messages??  I obviously wanted to post only one message, the one right before this one.  I apparently hit some wrong button, and trying to deal with that only made it worse.   :(

This ability was removed a few years ago when someone went on a binge deleting their messages to burn the earth when they left.

Huh?

Thanks for that... I'm checking it out... but I think I'm all in. :)

Oh yeah, I'm ALL IN with the non-refundable $1000.  Now for the hard part, waiting for it to come off the assembly-line.....   :D

The only two things I still have to research are the maintenance/parts and acceleration.  If they're in high demand and your car needs a part... are you going to be able to get it?  Are there going to be mechanics certified to work on it, or how easy/hard is it to work on?  Especially with those exposed wheel mounts.  And they mention top speed... but not acceleration...

Anyone who paid/reserved for an Elio car... Have they given you any updates? 2014 came and went as AFAIK nobody has gotten an Elio 2014 model. Are they releasing this year for sure? Next year? Or is it vaporware?
