Living Room / Re: Are You Ready to Switch to GNU/Linux?
« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on December 30, 2010, 09:18 PM »
1. You’re Tired of Paying for Software
 - Not really, I dont generally pay for much in the way of software, and when I do, its generally "Donation Ware" so I pay what I want...because I wanted to.

2. You’re Tired of Upgrading Hardware
 - Actually...no...thats one of my favorite times of the year :D

3. You’re Tired of Malware
 - I think I had malware once...
4. You’ve Seen One Too Many Patch Tuesdays
 - wtf is a patch tuesday?  I have automatic updates turned off, and have done since M$ decided to ship a crap load of viruses with one of the XP SP versions (dont recall which exact one)

5. You Don’t Have the Time
 - To learn a new operating system?  No

6. You Like Speed
 - Yes...this is why I have good hardware, backed up by a good internet connection...

7. You Like Sharing
 - Yuhuh, thats why I have MSN, Dropbox, Facebook, DC, and P2P software........

8. You Don’t Actually Love Internet Explorer
 - Hell no, I hate it...and the only time it ever gets loaded is if some crappy ass peice of badly coded crap that I have the misfortune of finding, decided to open it cause the coder was to goddamn lazy to simply open my freakin default browser, like any SANE person would do.......

9. You Want to Be in Control
 - There is no spoon...

10. You’re One of a Kind
 - I might be unique, but using *nix doesnt make you one of a kind...it makes you opne of a bunch of other people who use that OS...

Also, why the hell do people switch to *nix then do things like install WINE to run everything...tbh, if i was gonna install *nix, i would do command line only, no desktop enviroment...desktop enviroment/gaming is for microsoft, command line/servers is linux, anything "edity" like "photoshop" or "pinnacle studios" which _can_ run on windows, should be run on mac.

Seems to be lagging like hell when you try to atach any form of anything...

Just tried 3 times to post something in my personal area, so I could check the layout and such first, and every single time, i got timed out.

Before mouser asks...no, the image was not my usual 3MB+ file size, in fact, it was a measly 300kb (appx w300xh100)...1 singular image, no idea why its happening, or if this post will even get through lol.

Doesnt seem to be a problem on my side as I am able to visit and post on other sites.

-Stephen

*edit*

This post went through without a single problem or hint of lag.

*edit 2*

So did the last edit (Instead of getting stuck in an endless loop, im not going to post on the outcome of this edit)

Little island...little island...that owns America...

What! Has China finally taken over Taiwan and moved it's capital there?  :P ;D

------

BTW: Looked up 'fanny' in my BritSlang dictionary. (Only you guys... :-\)

I seriously doubt she meant it the way some people over there might take it. Especially since the "smack" part would likely require some rather complicated choreography. Possibly even special equipment.

 ;D

I guess you would have to RTFM for that special equip 40hz

*dies laughing*

Either thats lost in translation or yeaaaaah....it doesnt mean the same thing in England

I shudder to think.  :-\

But they drive on the 'wrong' side of the road over there to begin with, so I suppose anything is possible.  ;D

 :o.... :(.... >:(...bad 40hz!

lol yeah, a "fanny" here in England, ya know, that little island that basically owns America, and the country above it ;) means something TOTALLY different  8)

Good list Gwen7

- if you must rant or flame, don't 'go live' immediately after the spellcheck. compose offline and let it sit for a few hours. then delete it.

or rewrite it ten times and then delete it :)

Or do as I did, and go to a legit forum, with nice users, and have a moan about it there haha

Therefore, rather than tell people to "google it" or "RTFM", IF I decide to assist them at all, then - and even if I think that I know the answer already - I nowadays usually google it, or check Wikipedia (say) or RTFM for them, and then send them the results or source links, with the suggestion that  they could probably get even more useful information if they hunted around a bit more themselves or played about with the google search string. This is just helping people to help themselves.

Agreed, the best course of action is certainly to look for a valid google search string, and possibly give some links to WHY thats the string they SHOULD have searched for.

The main reason behind me posting this, was the fact that I _HAD_ googled for the answer, and when I clicked on a few links and didnt find anything, I found that forum, which then directed the original poster, and of course, anybody else who had GOOGLED it to find that post, BACK to google, which was kind of frustrating, and not exactly helpful.

I ALWAYS check google first before asking anybody outright, and ONLY if I cannot find my desired answer, or I find the answer but am still not 100% sure, will I ask somebody about it.

« Last post by KynloStephen66515 on December 26, 2010, 09:03 PM »
In this thread, I want to highlight one main forum that I feel needs to be named-and-shamed.

The following forum, is a supposed programming "help" forum...well...they might have SOME programming info on there...but thier forum is certainly not worth bothering with.

You see...unlike here, at Donation Coder, where users take the time and effort to help, the following site seems to love to use the phrase "Search on Google".
That phrase is an obvious "Go away, I cannot be bothered", which makes you wonder...why do they bother replying, if its not of any help?

I'm starting a small application and in it I want a very simple IRC client.
I can't find anything using google to where to start or how to do this?
Is there anyone here that knows or have worked with an IRC client before and can help me get a very simple app started or direct me in the right place.
Quite a normal question right?

I thought so...Now heres the FIRST reply...which I should mention...is from a MODERATOR!

Re: Simple IRC Client

Google Search

After a few other posts of the moderator saying "GTFO and Google it" and the user actually not clicking on that these people dont care, another user says the following:

Well... you probably didn't click on the 3rd link did you, because it has a complete solution ready for use.

Btw: 2nd link on the google search, redirects back to this thread.. Infinite loops atw

Now...I'm pretty sure its common knowledge that google is dynamic, and what shows up #2 for one person, might be #8 for another person 10 seconds later...

The site im going to name and shame is.........

Click To Reveal The Mentioned Site

The forum post that the quotes where taken from is...........

This is the reason I love DC...I have NEVER seen a user dismissed and told to GTFO and Google It :D

Do you know any other major forums who are guilty of this?  If so, post them!
3063
Yeah app, its not unique :P but figured id share it seeing as im on a mission releasing a ton of tray utilities haha.
3064
Am i the only one experiencing DC forum as being very fast to browse, but as having gotten verrrrrry sloooooooooooowwwwwww shen you submit a new post (or post modication).

I experience this as well.  Sometimes, they don't post at all so I have to go back, refresh, and click the post button again.

Last 3 or 4 posts I have noticed this also.
3065
a screenie please..  :)

Of the error dialog?  It's not going to be much help...
 (see attachment in previous post)

Thanks for the error report.

Ill get it fixed now and upload the fixed version :D
3066
Its going to eventually be added to an all-in-one installer, but for now, im keeping it seperate cause its not really anything big.

3068
Hey guys, this is nothing special, just something ive been using for awhile and figured I may as well clean it up and post it here.

This does nothing special other than sits in your tray and gives you quick access to all the major sections here on Donation Coder.

If I remember correctly (Im not a regular dock user) but you could try the following steps:

Go to your Add/Remove programs and locate it.

Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs

(Sorry if this doesnt work, its the only thing I can think of due to me not using Circle Dock)
