Josh,

For more on Keynote's closing;

It's a popular application and still seems to be the best-liked and most powerful freeware of its type.

« Last post by rjbull on January 31, 2006, 04:14 AM »
What about a text editor that just focuses on text creation, on putting words to screen, on writing?

Here is the answer.  You won't like it, but here is the answer, set out in science fiction writer Robert Sawyer's manifesto of WordStar as the True Way for writers

Would anyone be willing to develop a snippet organizer that can contain various things such as html links, text, pictures, etc about various different

Wouldn't Keynote (freeware) do, at least to start with?  It's not ideal for graphics because it's RTF, but should do everything you seem to want, and can be used as a clipboard enhancer as well.

There's plenty of other similar things, most of them payware.  Take a look at John Buckman's outdated but still useful survey at http://john.redmood.com/organizers.html
A much larger number are mentioned at  http://www.fredshack.com/docs/pim.html  but the comments are terse.

I took a look but don't have time to really put WanyWord through its paces.  I personally like the interface of Search much better, where all your options are visible all the time.  It looks to me like WanyWord has a lot of power, but taking advantage of it might be a bit of a pain.

It's not perfect.  I still prefer my DOS programs, partly because I'm more used to them, but most people insist on WinGUI and WAnyWord is the best I've seen.

Search comes with an editor that can be configured to open the found file and go to the first find (with surrounding lines).

When just searching for text, I often prefer not to be given the chance to accidentally change it  ;)

Does WanyWord support true regular expression searches?  I couldn't find a mention in the Help file.

I don't think so.  While those are useful in GREPs, I often prefer the Boolean logic that WAnyWord does have for extracting information from text files.

He does mention his competitors - apparently Search doesn't qualify (Search32 is a different program).

Probably not aware of it; too many programs, too little time...

How would you rate Search against WAnyWord, which is free?
home page http://home4.inet.tele.dk/jensguld/

I haven't tried Search, but see it only presents one-liner results.  GREPs have lots of uses, but if I'm trying to extract information from text  documents I like to have at least a few lines of context, which WAnyWord does.  He even "does a Mouser" and lists his competitors  :)

Here's a couple of Christmas cracker jokes that barely qualify:

Q.  What prowls the streets of Paris in a Tupperware box?
A.  The Lunchpack of Notre Dame.

Q.  What do you get if you cross an owl with a skunk?
A.  A bird that stinks, and doesn't give a hoot.

Mouser,

I just now noticed the Text Scraper function in the announcement of the new beta, haven't tried it yet.  CopyMessageBox at  http://www.thyante.com/  can in most cases save both an image of an error box, and also save its text and send just the text to clipboard, often useful for reporting to authors.  Is that what you mean?

I'd love to hear about other uses too!

I have to retrieve patents as PDF files from Delphion  http://www.delphion.com
I generally use their Boolean search form, which allows you to put four things in at a time.  You have to navigate various drop-downs, as well as type in the text.  Lately people have been giving me lists of 70 to 120 patents to get.  Patents generally have 7-digit numbers prefaced with a two-letter country code and usually suffixed with a letter+digit "kind" code (application vs. granted status).  That's a lot of typing of mindless items.  In the end I wrote an AWK script that converts my list of patent numbers into a AutoHotKey hotstrings script, thereby saving an awful lot of futile keypresses.  Just type the next hotstring trigger into the first box, and off it goes...  Nothing sophisticated, but a worthwhile time and frustration reliever.

Veign,

Give Seeker a try and tell me what you think..

    * Regular expression support

Regexps are nice, but I'd prefer Boolean searches for extracting information from files.  Also, I often want to make lists of files for use in other processes;  can it save its "hit lists?"

Not sure it's quite the same thing but I use Horst Schaeffer's PopSel and QSel for quick launching programs

http://home.mnet-online.de/horst.muc/

then go to Launchers.  Tiny, fast and free.  I've been fascinated by Horst's programs for over ten years.

Shame it won't even work with Maxthon, which AIUI is based on IE anyway.

IrfanView can be set to advance slides automatically - if that's what you mean by "movies" - and/or advance on keyboard/mouse movement.  The slideshow screen also has "Save as EXE/SCR file" and "Burn to CD" options, plus a load of minor(?) features.

I think they have paid for services for website owners to register their websites for enhanced status, maybe that is causing confusion.

Maybe that's it.

Don't know where $39 comes from. On the page I posted it says "Free Download" and it works fine for me. No suggestion it is a trial version.

I think I've seen Web sites where "Free Download" doesn't mean "freeware," just some kind of free trial, shareware or otherwise; hence a certain wariness.

I tend to avoid anything made by Microsoft, even if it's "free," simply because it's Microsoft.  The point about buying Ulead is well made.

Is IrfanView on its own not up to the job?  I don't think it can burn DVDs directly but assume most people will have freestanding software for that anyway.

The Royal Photographic Society's Colour Group has just distributed its annual exhibition CD-ROM (I have not looked at this) made with Pictures-to-Exe;

PicturesToExe has simple and intuitive interface, so creating of a presentation is very easy. All you have to do is choose some pictures (in JPG, GIF or BMP format). PicturesToExe will produce single EXE file, which contains all images inside. No additional programs (including PicturesToExe itself) are needed to run resulting presentation - only that stand-alone EXE file. And it will work under Windows 95, 98, Me, NT, 2000 and XP. If your demands are a bit higher, PicturesToExe allows you to make much more attractive presentations, than simply changing slides. You can customize each slide by specifying background color or picture, adding comments, sounds, objects. Moreover, it's possible to use different cinematographic transition effects between slides, add background music (in MP3, WAV or MIDI format). And ability to exactly synchronize show of slides to music, placing points on the time-line. If it is necessary, you are able to protect your presentation by password and assign expiration date. Presentations can be automatic (by timer) or controlled manually, run once or continuously. If you prefer, you can create SCR files (instead of EXE), and use your presentations as a standard Windows screen savers. Ability to prepare DVD-Video disc. The program has multi-language interface (19 languages are supported now).

More here  http://www.wnsoft.com/apr/index.html

Various registration options from $24 for private, non-commercial use up to $59 for corporate use.

I couldn't easily see the cost from their Web site, but the PC Magazine link they have said its $39.9x per year.  I'd prefer a cheaper alternative that supported other browsers...

They believe that software should be free, 100%, always, forever as in Free Beer and Freedom of speech.

Strikes me the people in alt.comp.freeware only believe in free beer.  In all their whining, I never noticed anything about free speech, i.e. source code availability.

Find And Run Robot / What's the correct abbreviation?
« Last post by rjbull on December 21, 2005, 03:53 AM »
Mouser,

Is there an official abbreviation of Find&RunRobot's name?  I've seen it written FARR, FaRR, F&RR, f+r, etc.

Just wondering...  the more so if the forum software's search feature is global, in which case using the "wrong" abbreviation might not retrieve what you were looking for.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: My new favorite pen
« Last post by rjbull on December 20, 2005, 03:49 AM »
I use fountain pens too, but I'm in the cheap-pen camp.  This is partly because of cost/loss/breakage/theft, of course, but only partly.  The other part; it seems to me that the pen/pencil you write best with is the one that wants to help you write, so in my case, I want a barrel that's not too thin in a pen that's light in the hand, and not cold to the touch.  That rules out most quality fountain pens because they're often metal and therefore heavy.  My current choice in fountain pens is the Sheaffer No-Nonsense range, which meet the above criteria and seem to have pretty good nibs.  The latest bottle of their black ink isn't to my mind as good as the last one, though.  Meanwhile, I keep casting sheep's eyes at Lamy pens.  They look very modern, but have what look like very ergonomic barrels.  I see the author Garth Nix now uses Waterman fountain pens to write his fantasy novels:  http://members.ozema...arthnix/writing.html
He adds some notes on why he likes to write in longhand.

Why is Roboform so much better than the Saved Passwords system in Mozilla Firefox, or a freestanding thing like KeePass?

I still have lots of little-used ones stored in Passpack though I have to remember to switch ClipCache off before I use it.  KeePass avoids sending clips, and with Firefox they're irrelevant.
