The only real bad attack I had used an IE helper object.  I knew something bad was happening, but I had a new computer going through first setup and the one being attacked, on a kvma switch.  The switch quit working so there was no way to gracefully shut down the new machine.  Rather than risk munging the Preloaded Vista x64 on the new system I let the old machine get hosed. Not that big a deal.  I just installed XP Pro that I was meaning to put on soon anyway.

But that experience is the main reason I avoid surfing with IE or browsers that use the IE engine.  ActiveX and BHOs are too wild west for me.  :)

RichCopy isn't a file manager but it's free and has many options.  Is is multithreaded and designed for bulk file copying.  To be honest I only used it to copy a Windows.old folder as TeraCopy does enough for me.  But it handled Windows.old copy to a networked drive smoothly(around 260,000 file objects.)

Good for the toolbox even if not perfect for this application.

The link is to an article which contains the download link.

Edit: It extracts to a folder, HoffmanUtilitySpotlight, and from there you run the setup.

This might be described as having the window one has a pointing-device pointer over coming to the front / top automatically.  I think it's likely to get used where the settings are such that focus-follows-mouse (so no clicking necessary for focus to change).

Ok.  I remember when I first used XWindows that used to drive me nuts.  Focus change on hover and single click launch.  I'll be glad when I can get a workbench with a few machines on it.  There seems to be a plethora of specialized Linux distros now.  It's a good time to jump back in the pool.  :)

One nice thing about the Brink Tutorials on the Vista/W7/W8 forums is if it includes a .reg file to set something up, it also includes a .reg file to undo it.  The Vista forum has low traffic these days, but the other two you can figure if there's a bug in the tutorial or .reg files someone will point it out before long.  It's a pretty safe source.

Also in W8 if you hit Winkey x, there's a small menu with commonly needed links such as Computer Management, Programs and Features, Disk Management, Control Panel, Admin and regular Command Prompts, Run etc..  :)

Also I find Theme Font and Size Changer is great.  Tab titles esp. are easier to read when bold.

@ewemoa I don't know what "auto-raise" is.  Would you describe it?

Edit:  Sorry, I should have listed all links in my first post.  I guess I was a cup short of a coffee.  Or stunned that this FF x64 ran smoothly.  btw after using FEBE to get passwords saved from FF Portable I could get SyncPlaces to load passwords.  Last big thing to do is find the cookie so I don't have to manually log in to my MDC gmail account.  FF Portable seems to generate the cookie where the other FF flavors won't. :)

I'm just trying Cyberfox now.  I don't want to speak too soon.  But so far I like it.  I just used FEBE to load in most of my FF AddOns.  Then added Classic Theme Restore.  Using SyncPlaces I got my bookmarks toolbar in the proper shape.  I haven't noticed any glitches yet.  64 bits and seems to run smoothly.

I guess if you are frenetically tweaking it can save navigating to the links.  Windows likes to hide them with every flavor change it seems.  It is good if you can remember the hotkeys.  Like Winkey Pause still brings up a window with System Protection on it, same as Vista/W7.

I can't find a screen shot of what the shortcut brings up.  In any case it will just be links maybe in muliple columns instead of one.  I'm sure in the registry it's al clsid stuff.

This just seems redundant to me, unless it gives you access to things not normally accessible even through administrative interfaces.

winkey+r, type compmgmt.msc

I personally like msconfig and compmgmt, but you can access just about any builtin utility the system has through the run command.
-SeraphimLabs (July 29, 2014, 04:03 PM)

I'm lucky if I can remember services.msc   :)
I haven't tried God Mode.  But esp. W8 it seems a lot of clicking to get to computer management.  Of course I could just make a shortcut.  In W8 I don't mess with Disk Maybe when I have a couple of desktop machines so I can bail out of mistakes. Esp. with this new fangled GPT stuff. But by then I'll likely be on W9.  :)

Same thing with hotkeys.  I write my own and with the system accelerators and the Start Screen ones added in, I'm good if I remember Winkey Q  :)

Afaik it's the same.  The tutorial title says All Tasks (God Mode.)  I haven't tried the one you posted.  I have seen a God Mode with a rectangular window with multiple columns.  Is that how yours looks?

^ I meant "give away" as in, let the enemy know my defenses.  It just feels funny posting "Hey!  I don't run a real time shield!"  Like putting a target on your own back.  :)

Just paranoia I guess.  :)

The anti-virus industry kind of reminds me of purchasing health insurance.  Unless your purchase is subsidized, it seems not to matter if you purchase catastrophic, all inclusive, or any coverage between.  The actuaries have it figured so there is no "smart buy." You get ripped off royally no matter how you try to amortize it.

Some problems I work on Windows forums, after some Q&A exchanges the poster then relates the fact that he or she is running 3 or 4 overlapping products simultaneously.  It's lucky the machine runs at all.  If you don't know how the machine works I guess the scare tactics can be quite effective.

The trouble with arguing against AV on forums, other than that the interest on the other side is vested, is that to make your point you have to give away your disaster avoidance/recovery strategies.

It's kind of like trying to ban the "Genuine Placebo" ads in the back of magazines.  The magazines get revenue to run them.  You get nothing out of pointing out the folly(except the joy inherent in pointing out follies of course.)   :)

Here's a tutorial how to add or remove All Tasks button to/from Control Panel for W7 and W8.  For lazy people like me, .reg files are available for download.  :)

Have you looked at Vim?  I thought it was a Windows port of vi but apparently it is multiplatform

]
portability

Vi is only available on Unix. Vim works on MS-Windows, Macintosh, Amiga, OS/2, VMS, QNX and other systems. And also on every Unix system.

Thanks for the info. I uninstalled too.  Maybe I'll check it out again later.  :)

By the look of things they should have named the service Dead Drop.

I'm playing around with it on Windows 8.  I clicked Column Mode in edit menu.  But I sure can't figure out how to select a column.  Most seem to work by holding Alt while dragging the mouse from the bottom up.  No matter what I do it selects by line.

The basic editor window looks interesting.  But also I notice no RegEx support in search.

I'm always on the lookout for good plain text editors.  If there's a killer feature I hope someone will tip me off to it.  :)

Not only does common sense not get updated, I've found it is also prone to being disabled very easily.  :tease:

People tend to lose all sense when dollars are on the line.

Not anything unusual but I got one of these mouse pads for use with my optical USB mouse and my Laptop.  They are cheap and lightweight for adding to the Laptop bag.  Also if you have a FedEx Office Store nearby they will ship it there gratis.

So for like $.75 you can have a lightweight mouse pad delivered.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Sublime Text Giveaway
« Last post by MilesAhead on July 23, 2014, 12:28 PM »

I suppose you could always send a query to their sales department and ask if you're that curious about who won it. But with only a single copy up for grabs I don't think there's much financial incentive for the dev to be playing games over it.
 8)

Yes, of course! Though I'm not that interested who won if there is one that won and an announcement like "Giveaway is over. The winner has been notified and thanks a lot for giving your email addresses." would have been very kind.

I think there is this one guy who wins everything.  State Lotto Contests, new cars, Irish Sweepstakes etc..  He used to work for the US Postal Service.  He was in a unique position to discard the entries of other participants.  This gave him a tremendous advantage.  Especially since he could bombard the contests with entries funded by the postage meter at the mail sorting center.  I believe he retired when snail mail contest entries went out of favor.

Unless of course he branched out into telecommunications.   Hmmmm.

Time to take part in the giveaway is over now and the page silently disappeard. No notice of a winner or that it existed ever. Sad.

I'm sure the developer has a free copy installed on his/her machine.  No need to download.  heh heh

It's frustrating for me because it's usually proper names.  Like I'm trying to tell someone about an actress and I can remember her major movies, the costars and directors, but not her name.  Drives me nuts.  :)
