General Software Discussion / Re: Metadata search software
« Last post by cyberdiva on September 13, 2012, 10:21 PM »
I'm sorry and a little surprised that File Locator Pro can't handle this kind of search.  You're probably right that it can't, but it might be worth asking their tech support.  I haven't had much contact with them, but I've been impressed with their responses the few times I've written.  You can find a link to a technical support form here:  http://www.mythicsoft.com/Page.aspx?type=gen&page=support

Good luck.  I hope you find something that works for you.

I haven't tried to do such searches, but I suspect that File Locator Pro could handle metadata searches.  I know that it has a setting to "search raw document data of processed files," and it's got many other settings for finding things other search programs can't handle.  There's also a freeware version, Agent Ransack, but I doubt that it has the same range of features.

there's two amazon comments threads AFAIK, but both those threads are about reviews being paid for. I havent heard of reviews being censored...
I too am astonished to hear that a negative review by 40hz was taken down on Amazon at the request of the book's author.  What possible justification could there be?  Yes, I'm aware that some positive reviews are paid for, and some negative reviews are concocted by competitors, but Amazon's agreeing to remove a presumably knowledgeable review boggles what's left of my mind.

Hi, Steven.  Thanks for posting this frustrating exchange between you and Roboform.  It makes me glad that I switched to LastPass some time ago, even though I already had a license for RF's desktop version 7.  I have one question about what you said re security hits on LastPass.  I only recall one, and if I remember correctly (always a question  :) ), no info was compromised, but LastPass nonetheless immediately notified users about the hit and advised changing the master password.  I remember doing so then.  Have there been more hits?

I'm not sure whether you're interested only in free programs, but if not, you might take a look at Hot Keyboard.  It works via hot keys and text shortcuts (which I much prefer to hot keys).  I don't think it makes use of the start menu or the run dialog.  You just type whatever hot key or text shortcut you wish, and it will instantly open a file, navigate to a website, etc., using either your default program/browser or another that you specify.  For example, when I type /sv, my Sieve file instantly opens.  (I use the / to be sure I don't accidentally trigger the shortcut when I don't mean to.)

A similar program is ActiveWords2.  It's more expensive than Hot Keyboard, but it allows you to install it on multiple computers and has a mechanism for preventing accidental triggering.  I own both programs and recommend them both.

General Software Discussion / Re: SoftMaker Office 2012 BETA testing
« Last post by cyberdiva on September 09, 2012, 09:34 PM »
I too have been very pleased with SoftMaker Office, which I've been using since the 2010 edition.  Unlike dvally, I opted for the Standard version, which doesn't have the email client but is less expensive.  I took advantage of a special offer and wound up paying about $25 for the entire suite.  I've never regretted moving from MS Office to SoftMaker.

I've been using the free version of Burning Studio 10 for quite a while, and I've been VERY happy with it.  It has worked well even when other programs have not.  Ashampoo continually sends me email offers to upgrade to the paid version of 11, but I've never seen a reason to do so.

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox 15 less of a memory hog
« Last post by cyberdiva on September 02, 2012, 12:15 PM »
edit: hmm, mistake updating LastPass. Messed up Opera so it wouldn't even load. Had to do restore point. Turns out I don't see any big memory savings anyway. Back to 14.01 for me.

I decided to set a restore point and then give Firefox 15 a try.  I'm happy to report that I did not have your experience.  After I installed FFx 15, I used Last Pass, and it worked fine.  I then opened Opera, and Last Pass worked fine there, too.  The Last Pass version that I have is 2.0, which I think I've had for several months.  I didn't need to upgrade to 2.0.2:  2.0 works fine with both FFx 15 and Opera 12.02.

I'm not sure why my experience was different from yours, but I'm glad it was.  :)

Oops, sorry.  I just figured out why I may have this on my computer.  Simple answer: I don't need it and will remove it.  I would have removed this message had I been able to figure out how to do so.  :-[  Since I couldn't figure out how to delete the message, I've just deleted what I originally wrote and replaced it with this apology.  (If someone has the power to remove it completely, I'd be most grateful if you'd do so.)

Thanks very much for the updated info.  I was about to update Firefox, but I care a LOT more about LastPass and Opera than about whether Firefox is at version 15.  For some time now, Firefox has not been my browser of choice but rather the least of evils.  If more software developers cared about their programs working with Opera, I'd happily make Opera my browser of choice.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: BitsduJour Malware bytes Deal
« Last post by cyberdiva on August 30, 2012, 01:18 PM »
Would people consider running just this, instead of an anti-virus?
Even the Malwarebytes folks say that MBAM is intended as a supplement to an anti-virus program, not a substitute for one.  I take them at their word.  MBAM and Microsoft Security Essentials play very nicely together; in the past I've also found MBAM to play nicely with other AV programs.

Superboyac, I've posted before about my husband's LG Optimus V, which is smaller than the iPhone.  I don't want to sound like a broken record, nor a fan girl (heck, I don't even own one of these phones), but my husband has been very pleased with the LG Optimus V (I think the V simply stands for Virgin Mobile--there are other Optimuses (Optimi?) for other carriers.  Anyway, it's definitely NOT the most modern phone--I think it runs Android 2.2.  But my husband uses it to read books, read his email, surf the Web, and a bunch of other things, including phone calls  :) .  He claims that he can see the screen well even in broad daylight, and he loves the fact that he can carry it in his shirt pocket.  In many ways, it sounds like it may meet your needs, and at a small fraction of the price you mentioned for the Xperia SX.  The best thing would be to try to find it in a physical store, so you could see how it feels.  I think the keyboard is smaller than I'd like, but my husband said that though he felt that way at first, he got used to it and now finds it OK.  Anyway, good luck with your decision!

General Software Discussion / Re: Help me understand Virtual Machine [VMWare]
« Last post by cyberdiva on August 21, 2012, 05:13 PM »
@CD - if you get a chance (and can spare about an hour) do try to watch some of Eli the Computer Guy's Introduction to Virtualization video I mentioned earlier. It's a very gentle, but not dumbed-down, introduction to virtualization technology. And one of the better instructional vids I've ever seen. :)
Thanks very much, 40hz, for the recommendation.  I watched the shorter video you mentioned earlier, about VirtualBox, and found it helpful.  I've now started to watch the longer video you mention here, and it may turn out to be really useful, but I wish Eli had broken it into two parts, one dealing with type 1 hypervisors and one dealing with type 2.  I found it somewhat tedious listening to him go on and on about type 1, knowing that I'd probably never use that.  I finally realized that there was a contents list below the video, and I was able to bail out of the rest of the type 1 discussion and move on to type 2.  But by then I was getting a bit antsy, so I stopped the video and did other things.  I definitely will go back to it later today, however, and I'm very grateful to you for letting me know about it.

Snapshots are managed and executed by the virtual machine software so it is really just a menu click away

Mouser, thanks very much for your fast and helpful reply!  So the VM software has within it the ability to make these snapshots, rather than having to use something like Macrium Reflect or Acronis?  If so, that's great.

Thanks VERY much, Skwire and Renegade, for your helpful responses.  I've got one more dumb question (well, actually I have an almost infinite store, but....): is a "snapshot" the same as an "image" such as those made by Macrium Reflect, Acronis, etc.?

Btw since it hasn't been said in this thread yet -- a virtual machine is an absolutely essential tool these days; it lets you test software safely and without polluting your real machine.
At the risk of appearing as dumb as I really am, I need to ask how this works.  If I install a program on a virtual machine and the program turns out to be malware that starts doing harm when you install it, how am I better protected if this happens on a virtual machine rather than on my real machine?  Obviously just getting rid of the malware program isn't enough.  Do I have to remove the virtual machine?  Is that what will solve the problem?  And does that mean that every time I encounter a problem, I have to trash the virtual machine and start over again?

Impressive job, kunkel!  (And I loved your remark about looping.)  Did you use Morpheus Standard or one of the more expensive versions?  Is it ever offered on Bits du Jour or GAOTD?

...and really, the screen on any phone is too small for that. Heck, I'd say an iPad2 is the smallest resolution as well as physical size where ebook reading is comfortable. On a phone? Ugh.

I probably should stay out of this conversation, since I don't even own a smartphone, but I have to say that my husband reads books on his Optimus V phone all the time.  He has easily read more than 50 books that way.  He used to use a Nook, but he stopped using it when he found out how much he enjoyed reading on his phone.  And unlike the Nook or, of course, an iPad, the Optimus V fits in his shirt pocket, so he always has it with him for reading as well as for use as a phone.  I didn't believe him when he said reading was comfortable on the Optimus V, but then he let me try it out for myself, and I was very pleasantly surprised.  I almost bought one after that, but I couldn't find a decent Scrabble game for Android (I've got my priorities ;D ), so I've kept my dumb phone and my beloved PalmTX, which has the kind of Scrabble game I want (one that allows me to play against the Palm's computer, doesn't have ads, and doesn't require an Internet connection).

I was surprised to read that the hacker "got in through Apple tech support and some clever social engineering that let them bypass security questions."  Huh?

Why? That is quite literally the oldest trick in the book. Scam artists have been using pieces of info to validate claims about one person to fool another since the beginning of time. A casual 5 minute conversation with anyone will glean enough info to do a google search for the rest of the details to answer security questions. ...And with folks putting their life story on FaceBook...the first two steps are academic.
Well, I guess I was assuming that other people are as cautious/paranoid as I am.  I put next-to-no personal info on Facebook and don't use security questions that can be answered via a Google search.  At least, I don't think I do.  :o   I do tend to be more truthful when I deal with tech support, but I frankly can't imagine someone knowing enough about me to be able to get personal info about me from tech support.

I was surprised to read that the hacker "got in through Apple tech support and some clever social engineering that let them bypass security questions."  Huh?  I don't use Apple stuff, but it's nonetheless disconcerting--make that alarming--that tech support is somehow involved/insecure and that one can somehow bypass security questions.  I wish I understood how this could happen.  If it could happen with Apple, I'm sure it could happen as well with MS.  I try to keep my paranoia level under control, but this has sent it sky high...um...to the cloud(s)? :o

I was all set to reply to Tuxman's and Jibz's assumption that a $40 text editor is likely to be of interest only to programmers, but I see barney has made some of the points that I too would have made.  I'm not a programmer, but I use my text editor (UltraEdit) every day and love the fact that it can handle all the formatting, searching (including using regular expressions), conversion to and from unicode, bookmarking, multiple undo, etc. that I ask of it.  Though I bought my copy of UltraEdit years ago, I'd certainly be willing to pay $40 or more for it if I were buying it today.  It's not just programmers who value and are willing to pay for a capable text editor.

FWIW, the Neat Net Tricks software review panel reviewed the previous version of NoteTab Pro a few months ago.  Two of the four panelists were very enthusiastic.  All four offer detailed evaluations (see esp. "Good points," "Weak points," and "Comments").  The review is at
