The Getting Organized Experiment of 2009 / Re: Ice Bath Method
« Last post by housetier on November 05, 2009, 08:54 PM »
Sounds like a reasonable and workable idea to me.

I did something similar for my finals: the exams were held from 8am to noon, so in the 2 weeks before I studied from 8am to noon and then stopped for the rest of the day. The day before the exams began I did not study but went to the movies. With such little effort I was among the best in my class.

That said, I really believe that method described in the OP will work (at least it will work for me).

Living Room / Re: Comcast internet throttling is up and running
« Last post by housetier on November 05, 2009, 10:06 AM »
Comcast apparently has too many customers, which is a good thing for "the market place". Or they have a monopoly in certain areas, which means there is no market place.

What are their competitors doing?

thanks for fixing.

Now that I have listened to the recording I find it hard to beleive a public school would pull this off. This is rather insulting to parents. I wonder if it's real...

While I don't understand the OP the attached file seems to include translations of gui elements or so. It's just one .ini file.

Post New Requests Here / Re: How to capture status bar text in Firefox v3.5.3
« Last post by housetier on October 20, 2009, 02:09 PM »
there is an extension that lets you inspect the request and response headers which FF exchanges with servers. I wonder if those can be made to log the requested domains or URLs.

The game has been released. After I played the demo I decided to buy it.

This is the second time in my life I actually buy a computer game. I like to play games with my computer, but so far I have only played the free ones (except, for Rise of the Triad which I bought and excessively played back then).

Let's see if the 15 EUR were worth it :)

you can use the extension noscript to stop google analytics.

And I strongly doubt that domain has something to do with google...

General Software Discussion / Re: 10/GUI
« Last post by housetier on October 16, 2009, 08:45 AM »
Since I don't own one of these new tiny mobile PCs yet, I was wondering if 10/GUI was inspired by them. Well maybe I am getting ahead of myself here, as I doubt there is a device that can handle 10 fingers accurately.

Nevertheless, I find 10/GUI interesting not because of the 10 fingers but because of their window management ideas. I have yet to find a desktop metaphor that suits the way my brain works. I have come close with the Awesome window manager, which I can control via keyboard. But a more fluid layout like shown in the demo video seems interesting. I winder if there is a window manager that does that.

Back to mobile pcs: how do they manage several windows on a small screen?

I want to hear arguments about 10/GUI or alternatives, but not who "started it first".

Living Room / Re: Can someone remind me why are we using email ?
« Last post by housetier on October 14, 2009, 05:17 PM »
I use email because I think it is useful. It does not HAVE to be useful at all, it's enough for me to think it is. And sometimes I am simply following a habit.

I do prefer IRC though. Still IM, email, phone have their purpose (at least from my point of view), have their usefulness.

They like bing because it is not google (too big) nor yahoo (too old).

I like 10/GUI and want to test it.

Using vimperator you can switch: either pass keystrokes on to the webapp, or treat them as, well, "vimperator commands". (Searching is done in vimp with "/" btw.)

Anyway, checking for and reading unread posts is exactly what I do in google reader, using my keyboard. It really matches my work flow.

I extensively use a few applications from google: mail, reader, calendar. From the beginning I was put off by their design but had gotten used to it.

Then I heard about Google Redesigned which was different and therefore better then the default look. It is quite a solid extension, with only a few very minor kinks.

But then I lifehacker mentioned helvetireader, helvetimail, or helvetical (I forgot which of those 3), and I became very much intrigued.

These are scripts for either greasemonkey or stylish; I chose the greasemonkey variant because I already had greasemonkey installed.

What these do is to dramatically reduce the visual noise on the applications' websites. I copied (copying is not stealing) screenshots from each project's website. Behold the beauty of Helvetica!

Between Google Redesigned (GR) and Helveti*, I am currently strongly in favor of Helvetica. However, GR integration is smoother: the new style is active "before" the google application is loaded, while the greasemonkey scripts seem to wait until the browser finished loading to then activate their style.

Both GR and Helveti* are much more visually appealing than google's default look.

here is a blog post about the same topic, which uses the tool I would have recommended: http://www.hanselman...TakenInPortrait.aspx

I have read a few comments about this, and found an interesting question: what counts as a review? Is it a short message on identi.ca, a forum post, a "review" at amazon, blog posts...

Do recommendations count as reviews?

I do have cables atm and it's a pain in the ass: each computer is different, each table is different, none of the tables were meant to be used as desks...

It's a bunch of hand-me-downs with too many cables for my taste. Speed is not so much an issue as simple setup: with those wireless cards I only need to lay power cables accross the room.

I will look into that wifi-n as well. Thanks! :)
