Shutdown Add-in claims to do both... sort of. Its author states that it hooks

into events triggered by Outlook and invoking a series of commands to help Outlook exit. After a certain timeout period, if Outlook still doesn't exit, then the process is forcefully exited

Carol, you've forced me to look at something I hadn't given much thought to before. My reading of the above is that this is simply automating what Knockout does and what I do with TaskManager - looks for Outlook's process running and kills it if Outlook has been closed. I'm not sure how the events are hooked into and what commands are invoked to "help" Outlook close, but that is the functionality that I've always associated with Shutdown Add-in. I bought it years ago because I grew tired of finding six or more Outlook processes hogging my processor and RAM (with 128MB at the time) and killing them with TM... Realistically, if all Shutdown Add-in is doing is forcing Outlook to close, this might actually be causing PST corruption as I've no idea how often it's simply terminated Outlook over the years.

Bother.
2977
PS My only concern with Knockout is that one is STILL terminating Outlook's process, rather than letting it exit gracefully (which is what Shutdown Add-in does).

Thanks for the link, Derek. I've been using Shutdown Add-in with Outlook and it worked brilliantly with 2000 and 2003 but doesn't seem to work as well with 2007. I'll give Knockout a look

I think we all now know what the conversation was:

Cody: It's ok to put the DCserver root password in my AOL email signature, right?
Mouser: Oh bother..

Note: THIS is the post that pointed me to SpellCatcher Plus: https://www.donation...57.msg43681#msg43681

Note as well, that despite my last post in the thread that I linked to above, I am still a registered user of SpellCatcher Plus! I never did request a refund because it is much better suited to my needs than the other options that I was looking at...

EDIT: see my sig  :-[

Hmm... thought I'd responded here long ago, but hadn't! I purchased SpellCatcher Plus after reading this review and this thread:

https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=5918.0

And have overall enjoyed it. It's highly configurable, so you can turn off a lot of features that (might) annoy you. My only beef with it is that every so often when I reboot I get a message saying that my SpellCatcher settings were created by an earlier version and could not be loaded, so I have to reset everything (fortunately, this is very easy to do). This leads to the second annoyance (minor): there have been no updates since I started using it in July or August 2007. I have corresponded with support and the replies were courteous, helpful, and prompt.

Although this recent thread: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=12142.0 started as a request for a DC discount on PowerGrep, a number of alternatives - FOSS and shareware - were suggested. You'll probably find something there. In addition, there are a number of threads on this forum dealing with similar needs. Here is a small sampling of them:

Living Room / Re: Haiku Poetry Messages for Microsoft Errors

My cousin is a  retired college professor. He is also very big on all things Japanese.  I e-mailed him , giving the website link that  Darwin provided ( http://www.crisbrady.net/WinHaiku.html ) .  He e-mailed back that one of his students did a paper on haiku and included most of them in the paper.  I asked for the year and the grade but have not heard back yet.

 ;D

Plagiarism from web sources is now CHRONIC in university/college...

OK - nicely stated! Thank you for clearing that up. I agree with you about the futility of trying to legislate this problem away.
2987
That's odd - it (WDS) is not turning up any of the *.mdb filenames I search for but it IS turning up xls files from the same folder. I'll have to look at how I've got it set up.

Yes... EU = European Union... why would you think EULA?

I didn't... I was just wondering why Renegade feels that having the EU stop Microsoft's bid to compete with Google via purchasing Yahoo! is very sick! It occurred to me that he may have interpreted EU as M$' end user agreement or something...

Oh well, at least we have the EU to stop their dreams ;D

Ok -- You've got some good points, but that there is just a very sick sick sick thing to say! :D

EU = European Union, not END USER LICENCE AGREEMENT... or am I missing the point here (wouldn't be the first time and certainly not the last...  :-[)?

I should certainly hope so! Unfortunately you have proven to me so far that most likely your best is about as close to absolute ineptitude as you can get.

Classic! Nicely done, Deozaan. I'm copying the text and will be modifying it to meet different needs over the coming decades - couldn't have said any of it better myself! Good job

Even better why not make this section only visible to contributing members of the site

Brilliant, and simple, idea - Carol. It would definitely cut down on these types of questions. Perhaps it's not necessary/desireable to limit it to contributing members, though. Probably better to make it available to all members but restrict access to guests. Mouser's software does require a licence so there are non-contributors who might have trouble installing licences and what not. They are required to register here to get the free licence, though...

I just realized as I cruised back here to read your post, Tom, that this couldn't have been more approrpriate - a computer glitch meant that my post got posted without the second half of my message, which was about the ten years on thing... Regarding Ian Hughes, I was just wondering if he's a member at DC... could happen, right? Anyway, he wrote your favourite haiku from the original post. It's right up there for me, too, and I can't believe it didn't win!

Heh, heh - I tried with a Sharpie and Scanahand couldn't generate a font from it  :o I'll have to find a thinner felt tip and try again.

Deozaan - I wish my handwriting were as neat as yours is!

Hmm... my note about the authorship of "Screen. Mind. Both are blank" got cut off - I had written that I wonder what became of Ian Hughes, ten years on? Perhaps he's even a member here?!

Ian Hughes wrote your favourite, Tom! It's the last on the list... The piece was dated Feb. 10, 1998.

Nice. I should have read further down the google results page... here's one of those urban legend busting type websites take on this:

http://www.snopes.co...r/internet/haiku.asp

It links here: http://archive.salon...1998/02/10chal2.html which lists 30+ haiku and the author's name for each. Funny, I don't find the two winners nearly as clever as many of the runners up!

They are rather fabulous, aren't they?

What stuns me is how they are both SPOT ON accurate and yet, just as haiku should be, so... peaceful.

Darwin sits back contentedly, having baited the trap, and waits for Ralf to take it!

EDIT: corrected spelling...

heh, heh, searching on the title of the original source (which I simply replicated for the title of the thread) has one hit... this thread!

However, searching for "windows haiku" (without the quotes) yielded this: http://www.crisbrady.net/WinHaiku.html, which presents the original error message side-by-side with the Haiku replacement. Nice

This is the only site I could find that seeks to make any sort of attribution: http://www.jzine.com/poetry/haiku.html It dates to 1998 and features a number more haiku than I have included above. It asks that the haiku not be reproduced without permission, so I'll direct you there!

EDIT: note, in the google search I've included above, there are NUMEROUS hits with variations on the this, but many of them are pretty much word for word what I posted. Good fun  :)
