Screenshot Captor / Re: Feature request
« Last post by mouser on September 16, 2006, 10:43 AM »
Hi David,

I know what you are asking..
currently the easiest way to do it is, just drag your file from the file explorer or desktop or whererever it resides, into the THUMBNAIL panel in screenshot captor.

you can then edit it in screenshot captor, save.

and then drag it FROM the thumbnail back to target folder.

yep, makes sense nudone, but some of forsters other suggestions like:
"Stop Right as You Begin a New Item" (i'm paraphrasing that)
and forcing yourself to stop at specific times even if you are in the middle of something
might still be worth thinking about even if your work periods are in blocks of hours not minutes.

welcome Lilly!
I also have no use for the tickler stuff.

I've been using an index card approach lately and i like it.  based on gtd.

what i've been doing is i have sections for "TOMORROW, WEEK, MONTH, LONGTERM" so that each day i go grab the stuff i PLAN to do the current day and bring those cards up front.  then i put stuff for tomorrow in the TOMORROW section, and file others into week, month, etc.

Living Room / Secret Shopper Scams: How to tell real from fake offers?
« Last post by mouser on September 16, 2006, 01:00 AM »
This page contains a detailed description of "Secret Shopper" scams.

http://www.snopes.co...ployment/shopper.asp

It's quite fun reading, and at the ends sums up with a long list of "How to Avoid Falling Victim to 'Secret Shopper' Scams: "

Hey is it just me, or isn't the easiest way to avoid falling victim to this to realize that no one is going to pay you tons of money to go shopping.

Living Room / Re: How Digg Gets Everything Backwards.. And How to Fix It
« Last post by mouser on September 16, 2006, 12:19 AM »
Interesting post up from Federated Media, which i guess is paid to promote Digg.com? or am i getting that wrong, maybe they are just a congolmerate of sites? sell advertising on digg.com pages.

One of the maxims of running a business is as it starts to get traction, folks will notice, and when they notice, they will start to question it. That's happening more and more here at FM...Had the poster done his homework, he'd realize FM has a large (12 and growing) direct salesforce, which is very focused on selling Digg, as well as all of our other sites...

Thanks for that link sri.
It's good to collect links to these things if for no other reason than to study what exists before making a new system.

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / Re: pc fasting (from lifedev.net)
« Last post by mouser on September 15, 2006, 11:44 PM »
i've been thinking about some of these issues myself recently (am i spending too much time on email, etc?), related to working more efficiently.

i think one of the things we also really have to remind ourselves to ask is, what non-efficient stuff do i get PLEASURE from?  There are always going to be things we do inefficiently.  But if they give us some pleasure, they aren't nescesarily good targets for fixing.

Developer's Corner / Nice blog entry on Code Coverage
« Last post by mouser on September 15, 2006, 11:26 PM »
I don't use code coverage but here is a nice intro post by Erik Sink (author of a book on the small software business) advocating it:

...
Code coverage is a controversial subject.  Gurus have been debating the related issues for decades.  I won't pretend to be one of those experts, but I see no reason not to pass along a few thoughts from my own experience in this area.

slysoft offered a discount for members (maybe 10% cant recall) and a 25% affiliate commission for us on top, but when we tried to get them to pass on commission directly to you guys when you ordered it they said they couldn't do it.  based on previous discussion on the forum (https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=5115.0) we turned down the offer of the discount completely.  i think it was a wise decision.

yes, my plan is to offer a small "Options" set for the popup, that will let you say whether you want to dismiss the dialog after choosing copy to clipboard or print commands.

you can create a custom alias group, which will always display a specific menu of programs in a specific order always.
like you could call the alias group "apps", and then when you type apps, up will come your predefined list.

however, i keep meaning to add the ability to let you specify an alias group to display by default when window is brought up.  i'm working on a minor update to farr and im adding that to my todo list since its easy and i've been meaning to add it for a while.

"Go GOE!"

"If you read nothing else on our site, get glasses!"

1. Podcast Show and DonationCoder.com Getting Organized Experiment (GOE)
We have a special treat to announce today in the newsletter. As you know we have recently begun a tour of Time Management and Productivity Frameworks on our forum.  We are proud to announce today that our podcast radio show this month consists entirely of part one of an exclusive two part interview we conducted with David Allen, one of the most respected authors in the field of time management and productivity, and the author of "Getting Things Done"  (part 2 will be broadcast next week).

And don't miss out on this week's Getting Organized Experiment assignment, where we learn about Mark "Do It Tomorrow" Forster's System.

2. Borland C++ Builder Donationware Programming Contest Winners Announced and Available for Download!
We finally announced the winners of the competition, and we've made the winning programs available for you to download for free. They include a new programmer's IDE, some cool games and utilities, and some powerful text manipulation and database tools. The programs are all donationware, so if you like them, donate to the authors:

3. Massive September Discounts and Giveaways

To celebrate our September fundraiser and our 2nd year of operations, we're featuring discounts and giveaways of a massive collection of some of the best shareware available anywhere.

Many thanks to all of the companies who donated software for us to give away, and who provided very generous discounts for all of our members, including:

4. Software Updates and Releases
Forum member doublebogey has been dazzling us with some great AHK script work, plus the normal scoundrels have some big updates for us:

5. DonationCoder.com Shootout Reviews and Editorials
It's been a while since we brought you some big shootout reviews, but all of that is going to be changing.  We start off with the first of several planned reviews of Note Taking software, and an editorial on problems with Digg.com.  Stay tuned next time for a comprehensive shootout review of icon editors.

6. New Mini-Reviews by Members
The mini-review section of our forum is seeing some real activity lately.  Got a program you love that people need to know about? Post a mini-review.

7. A Special Offer for September Donators - Last Chance for a Lifetime Deluxe Membership!

Some very significant changes are coming after September's fundraiser, and this is your last chance to take advantage of our lifetime universal license offer:

  • Throughout September, a one-time donation of any amount will grant you a non-expiring license for all current and future software developed on our site. Everyone who has donated prior to October 1st, 2006 will automatically be upgraded to this Deluxe status on October 1st.
  • After October 1st, this will change. In an effort to encourage donations directly to individual authors, after October 1st you will have to designate some donation credits (an amount of your choosing) explicitly to each author whose software you want, or else make a substantial sized donation to an author and site fund (perhaps $60) to get Deluxe status.
  • In addition, every donation made in September will be credited back 100% in the form of DonationCredits (instead of the normal 50%).  This means that you will get back your entire donation in the form of credits which you can give out to individual authors on the site (or to the site fund) exactly as you see fit.  While we humbly request that you choose to allocate some of your credits to the site fund, it is entirely up to you.

If you've already donated to us in the past, THANK YOU! You are already entitled to all of these benefits (of course we always welcome additional donations).

If you haven't donated yet, isn't now the time to consider whether a small donation wouldn't be good for you and good for us?

How much should I contribute?
We know it's not easy to figure out how much you should contribute to a site like ours.  Think about what you spend on software over the course of a year, and then ask yourself if it might be worth a contribution of maybe $50, not for what we've already created, but for the new software that your contribution will help us create in the upcoming year.  Software that you will benefit from.  If you're still unsure, check out our Scientifically Proven Optimal Donation Amount Chart for some additional guidance. We accept donations in any form (PayPal, credit cards, shareware services, money orders, checks, rare gems, hand-drawn art, etc.).

If you can't afford to make a financial donation - there are tons of other ways you can help us: Tell your friends about our site and software; leave comments on download sites about your favorite programs of ours, submit bug reports, write a review, help out other members on the forum, etc.

NOTE: This special offer ends when the fundraiser ends.  So this is your *LAST CHANCE* to become a supporter of the site with these benefits.

8. General Software Discussion
Lots of great software discussion on the forum in the last two weeks:

9. Web Discoveries, Debates, and Articles
What's worth reading on the web? With so much information out there it can be hard to know.  Here are some recent discoveries we're talking about on the forum.

10. Fun and Games
Who ever said not to mix business with pleasure? That's all we do here!

11. Developer's Corner
Our site isn't just for coders, but we like to keep up with the latest issues in software engineering and web development.

12. Site of the Month
Our site of the month for September 2006 is one of the original sites focusing on time management for geeks:
