General Software Discussion / Re: Maxthon 2.0 Invitation
« Last post by Josh on August 05, 2006, 01:18 PM »
Maxthon 2.0 is nice, but they got rid of several key features from the 1.0 series. The one I miss the most is CTRL+TAB and CTRL+SHIFT+TAB for tab navigation. This is a standard key combo in every other tabbed browser, and now they changed it to CTRL+LEFT and CTRL+RIGHT, which is ok if you dont mind it, but I prefer being able to use one hand to navigate tabs.

Sounds like its dependencies are not starting up. If the dependency services fail to start first, the WWP service will not start. Try delaying it

B drive was used back in the days when people had multiple floppy disks. Back in those days, you would have both a 3.5 inch and a 5.25 inch floppy disk drive. Nowadays, its really not needed.

General Review Discussion / Re: Daemon Tools
« Last post by Josh on August 04, 2006, 12:06 AM »
Absolutely great review! I too am a huge fan of daemon tools. Many other apps offer similar functionality, alcohol 120, nero, acronis true image, etc but none have the ease of use that this (coupled with the awxd tools shell extension ( http://www.daemon-tools.cc/dtcc/download.php?mode=Download&id=90 ) make it the best solution for a virtual drive system.

Again, great review!

General Software Discussion / Windows Debugging tools - 6.6.7.5
« Last post by Josh on August 01, 2006, 08:15 PM »
Microsoft Debugging Tools for Windows includes tools, downloads, and recommended techniques for debugging drivers for Windows.

Microsoft Debugging Tools for Windows has the following other editions available: Microsoft Debugging Tools for Windows Me.

These tools allow you to debug system problems (like system dumps from bsod's). If you are into this kinda thing, it is a very useful toolset. I always install this first thing on a new windows install. Dont forget to install the windows symbols pack also ( http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/symbolpkg.mspx )

NOTE: THESE ONLY WORK ON WINDOWS NT BASED SYSTEMS (Windows NT, 2000, XP, 2003).

Well, if there are no objections, I will update the post to include a text file with all of the code so that it can be copy/pasted and then edited to suit the needs of the reviewer. I will give this a few days and then if no other suggestions, I will post it.

Intro:

Have you ever told yourself that you need to develop a good work schedule instead of taking random breaks throughout your work day? If so, this app is for you. This will help you organize your work day so that you take breaks at a more regular schedule after doing a pre-determined amount of work.

Who is this app designed for:

Those who require more motivation to organize their workday better. Those who tend to procrastinate on breaks and take them for longer than they should.

The Good

Well, what good thing cant I say about this application? It does whats its designed to and it does it well. The application offers sounds to alert you when its break time and time to continue working

The Break time sound:

The work cycle over sound

The Time to work again sound

The application offers a good, easy to configure interface which is pretty straight forward. To configure it, you simply set the work time, the break time, and the number of cycles. Hit apply, and you are in business. The break time is the amount of time you want each break to be. The work time is the amount of time you want to work for before a break, and the cycle count is the number of work/rest cycles in your work day.

The application runs in the system tray, is very unobtrusive, after initial configuration and pops up a dialog when its time to work, and when its time for a break. These dialogs follow

The break time dialog

The work time dialog

The needs improvement section

This application is great, but it has a few things which this reviewer feels could be added or changed.

One thing is the ability to add fractions of a minute. I would like to be able to set work time for 7.5 minutes, and break for 2.5, for example. Currently this is not possible.

One other gripe I have is that the application should prompt you to apply changes when the work button is hit, if the values have been changed.

Why I think you should use this product

If you are anything like this reviewer, you like to take breaks, and take them often. But sometimes, you get into the habit of pushing out your breaks longer than you should. This app will help you maintain a good work/rest cycle and get you into the habit of working more than breaking :)

How does it compare to similar apps

I havent seen any similar apps.

Conclusions

This is a great app for the habit procratinator. This will help you not only with your work day, but when you have projects which are due and you need to get done. Overall, this is a very well thought out and planned application. The things I mentioned which need improvement are very minor and are definitely far from show stoppers. This definitely gets two thumbs up from me!

General Software Discussion / Re: The Best Browser? With Roboform?
« Last post by Josh on August 01, 2006, 08:58 AM »
Roboform is as safe as you make it, just like any other password based encryption. If you use a weak password, your files can be easily hacked, however if you use a strong password, you should be fairly safe. I recommend a password that contains at least 2 upper case, 2 lower case, 2 numerals and 2 special characters, plus has a length of at least 10 characters. That will vary up the password well enough for most purposes. Heck, that is the DoD Password requirement so it must be worth something.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows vista upgrade path
« Last post by Josh on July 31, 2006, 09:58 PM »
Well, compare windows xp sp2 to windows 2000. The code base has been changed quite a bit to allow for additional security features which were never back ported to windows 2000 to include stuff like DEP.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows vista upgrade path
« Last post by Josh on July 31, 2006, 09:32 PM »
Well, I think the reason they are axing windows 2000 on this one is the fact that there is probably a significant change from the code bases and providing upgrade capability to windows 2000 would probably prove to be a bigger burden than its benefits would merit. Yes, its still a widely used OS, but after testing, I stand by my last statement in that there are SIGNIFICANT changes to windows vista that could merit such a decision.

General Software Discussion / Windows vista upgrade path
« Last post by Josh on July 31, 2006, 07:03 PM »
Betanews has an article posted detailing microsoft's upgrade strategies for Windows vista. Ironically, Windows 2000 users will NOT be able to upgrade to this OS and will require a fresh install to get vista working.

With Windows Vista nearing its first release candidate in preparation for a final launch early next year, Microsoft is providing more details about possible upgrade paths. Of note: Windows 2000 cannot be upgraded to Vista.

While Windows 2000 Professional customers may purchase a cheaper "upgrade" copy of Microsoft next-generation operating system, Windows Vista must be "clean installed," which means users will need to back up their files and data manually and then copy everything into place. Applications will also need to be re-installed.

What GoDaddy Recommends When You Accidentally Check for the Availability of Ho.com

We promise this is a true story. We were trying to reserve a domain name on GoDaddy today and accidentally hit "submit" before we had finished typing in the name. We had only punched in the first two letters: "h" and "o."

We were quickly informed by GoDaddy that ho.com, ho.net, ho.us and all other variations had long since been purchased. However, GoDaddy was helpful enough to suggest the following alternatives:
