Living Room / Re: do you know good photo collection hosting site
« Last post by app103 on February 04, 2010, 11:25 AM »
Privacy in dropbox photo albums seems to be pretty good. Nobody can see the images unless you personally invite them, have a dropbox account, and are logged in. And you can easily revoke permissions. And I believe they can be set, per album. (don't confuse this with sticking them in your public folder where anyone can see them if they know the url)

A continuation of this one.
 (see attachment in previous post)

But I have had broadband back and a faster pc since October 2008.

Of course the connection has also been a bit unstable, but soon that will be fixed when I upgrade from DSL to FIOS.  :D

General Software Discussion / Re: Quasi Post-It note utility?

I am a big fan of Notezilla and use it as an auxiliary hard disk for my brain. My whole life is stored in it and I automate a lot through it.

There is a lot of info about it if you search the forum, including a review, a DC members only discount, and my story about how I came to use it.

It was one of the best software purchases I have made in years.

For a comprehensive list of all the sticky notes applications that exist for Windows, take a look here.

Unfinished Requests / Re: IDEA: internet explorer desktop icon (right click)
« Last post by app103 on January 29, 2010, 01:39 PM »
Not sure if you are aware of this, but if you right click your taskbar and look under the "Toolbars" menu, there is an option for "Links" that will place the entire collection of favorites that you have on IE's Links toobar, on your taskbar as a toolbar. You can slide this toolbar as small as possible and get a little button with a double arrow, that when clicked will give you a popup menu with all your favorites.

Just be glad you are not Japanese or something. At least the English you code in resembles your native language, somewhat.

Or if HTML was created in Japanese and not English. Then you'd really be confused by having to type "色" instead of "color".

Those 10 function keys on the left side...

I'd love to have a keypad full of them, separate from my keyboard...with at least 100 of those keys. Throw in a row of number keys*, so I can have "pages" of them and expand that 100 to the functionality of 1000.  :D

*Scratch that...forget numbers, just make them customizable "category" keys.

General Software Discussion / Re: Make XP look like Win7
« Last post by app103 on January 29, 2010, 05:12 AM »
Is there a guide to making Win7 look like Win2000 and behave like XP?

Because I am very happy with my XP system with classic theme, and I'd rather not upgrade if I am going to end up forced to look at a bunch of eye candy that I'd rather not, and lose functionality with all the crap they changed.

Why not just the random button that takes you to a random thread from the Livingroom section, only? The stuff there is pretty much of interest to just about anyone and would be an interesting collection to browse through.

Living Room / Re: Book: Fifty Dangerous Things (You Should Let Your Children Do)
« Last post by app103 on January 28, 2010, 12:33 PM »
From my recollection of what my friends and I (and even other kids in the neighborhood that I barely knew) did I can say that you're certainly not alone in that.  I think most every kid has a little pyromania at some point (fire's pretty fascinating - many dangerous things are).  Knowing what I know now, I'm actually a little surprised how few serious accidents occurred.

When we were kids, we were not allowed to come anywhere near matches and parents would search their kids looking for them. (there was this little problem on our block with kids building bombs with firecrackers and a certain part from tinkertoys and blowing potholes in the street)

But that didn't stop us! We all had little magnifying glasses that came out of Crackerjack boxes.  8)

When I was a little older, I had a definite dare-devil streak running through me. When I think back to the crazy things I did, I wonder how the heck I ever lived to see the age of 12.

Our local library had big columns in the front and a ledge that went all the way around the building. I was skinny enough to squeeze between the columns and the building and get out onto the ledge, which I would walk all the way around. In the front of the building it wasn't so high off the ground, but around the back it was about a 3 story drop.

I can remember watching movies as a kid where someone would end up stuck on a ledge of some skyscraper and have to walk it till they found an open window to climb in and it was always portrayed as something dangerous and scary, and I never understood why. To me walking a ledge on a building was a piece of cake...did it a million times, on a much skinner ledge than in the movies.

They have since remodeled the library and the columns are gone, along with the marble stairs that had a smooth part on each side, that I went sliding down head first, like a sliding board. They built an addition on that makes it impossible for anyone to get to that ledge any more.

Of course the really steep hill I used to go rollerskating down, on the uneven sidewalk, jumping all the bumps, is still there.  ;)

I also had a 3rd floor bedroom with a roof outside the window, that I used to love going out and just sitting there, in the middle of the night, whenever it snowed.

And except for the rollerskating down that hill, my parents had no idea that I ever did any of this.

It does offer a suggestion on how to beat it and prevent the spam on forums that require registration.

No taller, just longer.  I was thinking the seekbar length would be double that of the volume.

Could always make showing this optional for anyone that might object to the extra length.

Longer is fine, as long as the horizontal one doesn't become taller. It currently fits nicely over the titlebars at the top of my screen, without interfering with using whatever applications I have open.

This was the only one I could find, but it adds the entire bookmarks tree to the context menu. You can't set it to only show specific bookmarks or folders of bookmarks.

You know, I thought I had v3, but as it turns out I actually have Puzzle Master v1. (it's much older than I thought!)

Not sure if newer versions can use the puzzle files from the much older ones (I think they can) but if you want to have some more puzzles, here is a bunch (22) that I made a long time ago. (in the descriptions is an old url for my art site, which was changed to http://www.russograffix.tk)

DC Website Help and Extras / Re: is the chatroom borked?
« Last post by app103 on January 19, 2010, 06:42 PM »
Try the chatroom now -- sorry i didn't realize there was an ongoing problem.
Problem was caused by a recent addition of code to bust out of iFrames.

I am sorry about that but mouser said there wasn't any iframes on the site. He forgot about that one.

The code to bust out of frames/iframes became necessary when I discovered that links to pages on dc that appear in the friendfeed facebook app, were loading dc's pages within the facebook interface in such a way that it was plastered with facebook ads and you couldn't even tell it was dc.

(the ads appear in the right column that isn't showing in this screenshot)

It's kind of old, but I liked Puzzle Master 3.

You can make your own puzzles, adjust the difficulty, piece size, even share your home made puzzles with others that have the game (if you can find anyone else that does). It also has sorting trays, to help keep your working space clear of clutter while you are solving it.

There are also some newer versions, but they are more expensive.

Puzzle Master 4
Puzzle Master 5
Puzzle Master 1,000,000 (couldn't find a download trial of this one)

I was just told the following by a friend:

For Vista and above, there is SetCurrentConsoleFontEx, as already has been said.
For 2K and XP, there is an undocumented function SetConsoleFont; e.g. read here.
here is some code if your fellow can read/translate C
http://stackoverflow...ont-in-c-console-app
'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Console' <--- registry path to alter for saving settings.
"console window how to change font" <-- my google search.
2971
Have you tried following the .net code back to its source? You might find your answers there.

Sometimes the managed way of doing it is similar enough you can translate it back to unmanaged.
2972
You could change the font used in the whole console window with SetCurrentConsoleFontEx, but it only works on Vista, Server 2008, and Win7.

I haven't found anything about changing text size, unfortunately.
2973
For colors, try this:

Code: Delphi [Select]
  1. // This will cause text to be red:
  2.
  3.   SetConsoleTextAttribute(GetStdHandle(
  4.                           STD_OUTPUT_HANDLE),
  5.                           FOREGROUND_RED or
  6.                           FOREGROUND_INTENSITY);
  7.
  8. // This sets it to white:
  9.
  10.   SetConsoleTextAttribute(GetStdHandle(
  11.                           STD_OUTPUT_HANDLE),
  12.                           FOREGROUND_RED or
  13.                           FOREGROUND_GREEN or
  14.                           FOREGROUND_BLUE);

Additionally, those PCs with hardware virtualization have it turned off by default, so you will need to turn on the hardware virtualization capability before you can use it.

My Dell Vostro 410 (Q6600) not only has it, came with it turned ON, by default.

General Software Discussion / Re: Trend Micro Security - oddly like malware...
« Last post by app103 on January 14, 2010, 04:14 PM »
There was an issue with this with AVG at one time (not sure if it is still the case) where you could attempt to remove it through add/remove programs, which would always fail with an error message that told you to contact support and gave an email address. But when you contacted them you had to include your account number, which you would only have if you paid for it. If you didn't pay for it (using the free version) they wouldn't help you and left you on your own to find a solution.

I did eventually find the solution: Download the latest installer for their product if you no longer had the original installer, and during setup it would detect the installed version and give you a few options: install, repair, remove (perhaps upgrade). As long as you did it that way, it removed itself quite easily.
