General Software Discussion / Re: What's wrong with XP's built-in firewall?

Outbound protection is nice, though it's mainly useful for paranoid people. What you really want to concentrate about is not getting bad stuff on your computer, once it's there it's too late anyway. So, outbound protection will only help you getting frustrated because of popups and non-working windows (SMB/CIFS) filesharing.

Actually i would disagree with this and say that
outbound protection is extremely enlightening if you are curious about what applications do, where they are connecting, and what could be going wrong.  in addition to preventing bad programs from doing bad things (which as f0dder alludes to is probably too late to help you much once installed), it can be extremely useful in identifying programs that are merely annoying in connecting home, etc.

very very nice.

i liked this:
IMMEDIATE ADVANTAGES
The first advantage of this system is that it grows organically. Task files are not set up until they are needed. The second advantage is that the system recognises that people work best when they have paper to shuffle around, make notes on, place side by side, clip to or unclip from. The third advantage is that paper never goes missing because the chaos of paper on the desk is all from one task.

dont take requests for new art - just make the first pack of existing art.
for flash i think ideally it will be in illustrator format which people should be able to import as transparent vector stuff, ideal for animating i think.  if not possible then transparent png probably would be second best.  (maybe both formats if you got it).

actually, i think it's best to release a "test pack" first, without doing much effort, of just one pose of cody and a background, so people can test how easy it is to bring into flash and work with.

its extremely safe to install a beta right on top of old version (just exit from tray first).
you can always roll back and the betas wont do any damage.

in general, after a day of them being released if no one has reported any disasters just go ahead and install.

shouldn't cody play a prominent role in this game?
i suggest flash, for the sake of playability.

drop it.

you did what people rarely do - you actually went to the professors and asked them their advice - this was smart and brave, and got you some good information.  drop the class - and you'll take it again, if not next semester, then the semester after if it's only offered in alternating semesters.

the only possible reason i can think of not to is if you have some kind of assistance that is dependent on taking a certain # of credits per semester.  otherwise it really is a no brainer.

click "show recent topics" and youll see a sorted list by last-reply date.

NOTE:
i actually modded that feature of the smf forum software to display a lot more than normal and also allow you to sort by creation date, which might be what you want.

all this minutia talk is a good example of why, unless you love wallowing in this stuff and spending days and days of time obsessing, you should go to a site like dell and just use one of their configuration things to configure a reasonable pc and be done with it, imho.

I think i better step in and clear this up before someone falls for this scam.
Please people, do not buy this thing.

While it does work, it consumes a lot of battery power and it's expensive.

You can rewind your dvds at home for free using a simple trick:  get yourself a ziplock bag or a plastic airtight container (must be air tight).  Fill it with cold water (between 50 and 60 degrees farenheight).  Place dvd (only one per container) inside and let sit for 1 hour in the refridgerator.  Due to the principle of thermodynamics, the cold temperature will cause the dvd data to contract and rewind itself, using no electricity at all (except of course the minor amount used by the refridgerator).  While it's true this process takes a bit longer, it's a lot cheaper than buying a dvd rewinder!

Living Room / Re: How Digg Gets Everything Backwards.. And How to Fix It
« Last post by mouser on October 04, 2006, 02:47 PM »
A very interesting new article that focuses on what i have been saying for a long time is the key problem, that digg (like google) incentivizes bad behavior:
http://www.shmula.co...sson-in-freakonomics

the key to fixing these things has to be removing the incentive for gaming the system, because quotes like this from digg founders (and the similar stuff is said by google) is just wrong:

We have sophisticated anti-gaming processes. We are spending a lot in R & D to prevent gaming. Motivations don’t matter.

just like google's adsense has now become a playground for click fraud, and has created an entire shadow web of fake websites designed to get search engine traffic, until you fix the incentives, you are turning our internet into an engine for manipulation and gaming by those who make money by figuring out how to trick algorithms into bringing them traffic.

This is the perfect time to ask nudone to release his Cody Art Pack, with good quality images of our mascot Cody for use in a game.  I'd love to be able to post some Cody flash games on the site and give them the attention they deserve.

Nudone, what do you say?

Also, any game designers out there be sure to check out the Accessibility Game Contest we are running through December 22nd: https://www.donation....com/Contests/agame/

I think starting some threads about this in the "Developer's Corner" of are forum might be a good place to have such discussions, so how about starting us off with a post there Mizraim?

Living Room / Blog Article - Social Networking: Time For A Silver Bullet
« Last post by mouser on October 04, 2006, 01:16 PM »
There's a reason that Read/WriteWeb is our site-of-the-month for October.  Here comes another nice roundup of social networking sites:

MySpace is booming in popularity; Facebook is gracing the headlines again; Bebo is growing incredibly; Tribe relaunched; Cyworld, Hive7 and SecondLife are nothing short of a phenomenon; LinkedIn is becoming 'People Search'; ITToolbox relaunched with a host of social networking features; Friendster is now refueling itself to enter the market again.

Put simply, social networking is hot and there is plenty of money and action in the SNS space to prove it.
...
There are hundreds of emergent social networks, but I've shortlisted a few that are worth keeping an eye on (apart from the obvious ones, like MySpace and Facebook):

When i was just learning to program, one of the first games i would write on a computer (ibm pc, trs-80, radio shack color computer) was a lunar lander clone - such a fun program to write.

Well here's a suped-up flash version that's very well done with lots of bonus stuff, Starship Eleven:

We've mentioned these tools before,
vibe streamer: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=3981.0
subsonic: https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=5193.0

I think it's about time someone did a review of these tools!

Here's a new one, Jinzora:

Jinzora enables you to stream your digital music and videos to any internet connected computer using a web browser.

Streaming your media with Jinzora gives you quick and easy access to your online music collection from any internet connected computer. Have a large CD or mp3 collection? Also might be worth a look, more of a jukebox tool but also with some web features and getting TONS of attention lately, Songbird:
