« Last post by Contro on October 17, 2012, 03:15 PM »
New computer arriving probably tomorrow, and I have a few queries as I know SFA about windows 7 and want to install it :)
Hope you can help!

I'm installing Windows 7 professional. I'm interested in XP mode as I'm still using software from 1999 :)
New machine will have 8GB ram, i5 2400 CPU. So I guess if XP mode is unsuccessfull I can use XP in a virtual whachamacallit (I have no experience yet with "virtual"!). [1] or should I install XP as well and dual boot?

Other aspects are, [2] how large a partition should I use for windows + software (very roughly) I wont be installing games but will be installing some spacehoggers like adobe illustrator.

Wont have to worry about page file till after install, but think I could chance disabling it, will wait see how I get on

[3] What's the story about win 7 recovery partition - and diagnostic tools? would I have to create a recovery partition like this:
http://en.kioskea.ne...a-recovery-partition
not sure if I need or want that, suspect I'd prefer to work with an image made once the software is installed.

I'm sure I'll have more once I get going.
TIA, Tom

I was thinking about professional . But the technical assitant service recommend me premium edition.
But I am going to give you a good additional reason to select professional.

Premium edition is limited to 16 GB ram memory.

Profesional edition more than  100 GB ram memory.

Talk about the present ?
The future is the present.

In order:

1. Hard to say without testing. XP mode works for everything AFAIK. But Win 7 handles many legacy programs without it using its built-in in compatibility mode. So the full virtual machine may not be necessary depending upon what you're running. I'd try installing without and only download and install the XP mode VM if you really need it.

2. Impossible to answer without knowing exactly what you're going to be loading and how big a hard drive you have. If you give yourself about 100Gb that should easily handle Windows plus most anything else the average person is going to install.

3. If your machine came from the manufacturer with a recovery partition, leave it on the machine. If you're installing everything yourself you won't have one nor would you probably need one. It's something put there more for the convenience of the manufacturer when helping an in-warranty customer recover a totally messed up machine.

You can restore your system from images you create and keep on an external drive or other media. It's better your recovery images be on a separate drive anyway in case of hardware failure.

Just don't lose your Windows DVD or your images. 8)

For two years i am learning virtual machines. I have a lot.
My idea is use intensivily.
with 16 GB of ram I am beginning to see the "light"
On the base windows 7 (or windows "x") and a lot of virtual machines.

Contro,
please, could you quote just the text that you are replying to?

Makes it easier for me (and others) to read understand what you are saying.
Thanks!

I use gparted to do my initial setups. But I'd strongly suggest running a Microsoft "fix master boot record" (i.e. run bootrec /FixMbr from the DVD on the harddrive prior to installing Windows7 "just in case."

Details and how-to here if you need them. 8)

Ouwwww. I didn't. I am trying seven and install in the letter I: from xp, but now is C:
Don't worry . I'll a new entirely disk

By the way. i think the idea of maintaining the dual boot with several differents systems is dead.

But I don't like to take risks , so I have the foolish idea of continuing with my usage of several times installed the same system. Now seems no possible with 7.

thanks Carol & sj
it's a custom built machine, so I'll be doing a clean install myself. Havent got either yet (machine or windows disc) so just thinking ahead yet.

I do have a couple of XP licenses so virtual sounds like the best idea. From what I've heard about windows 7 it's easy enough to install etc.

The last time I installed XP, I used Parted Magic/gparted first to setup the partitions. Will probably just do that with the win install this time.

I've got networkable virtual copies of everything back to DOS v6.22.
that sound impressive :)

Custom build machine. Sacred words for me.
Is the only way I know.
Beginning the box.
My old box of my first pc probably in 2013 will convert in a new pc with windows "x"

I love the VirtualPC thing and will probably never go back to dual booting. I've got networkable virtual copies of everything back to DOS v6.22.

C: partition, I thought 40GB would be enough but it's bitten me a few times, if you got the space and are going to be using large apps go at least 60 or 80GB.

Recovery partions are only useful if you don't have the install media (IMO). If you really want to image, use a 3rd party app to image it to a completely different external drive that can be moved to a safe location.

Nice combination

By the way, my initial plan was .

Disconnect my seven disks
Connect the system disk (new of 2 TB)
Partition that disk
Install in the first partition C:

Then install the second system on D: (I don't know the results.... because if the system goes to C: again....

Insert a data disk to occupy the letter E:

Install over the letter F: in the system disk

Insert a new data disk with partitions G: , H:

Install over the letter I: in the system disk

Inserta a new data disk with partitions J: , K: , L:

install over the leter M: in the system disk (This is my main system mmmmm !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

In my CRM many links point to that system.....

Install over the letter N: in the system disk. (now we have six systems, but this is not correct because we are talking about windows 7)

So we need the seventh system

Inserta a new data disk partitions O: , P:, Q: .

Install over the letter R: the seventh and final system.

It's not possible now, but that was my plan.

Can I install a virtual machine with windows 7 inside windows 7 ?

Will they call me fool again ?

Off-topic, but Just in Case:

Are you planning on installing 7 on a machine with more than one harddrive?

  • It will automatically install the boot partition on Drive 0
  • Best to have the install (C:\) on the same harddrive (0)
  • If necessary, remove all other drives for it to install on the drive you want
  • Best to install on a clean unpartitioned drive

That would probably be Filebox eXtender, as I also have that installed and love the feature.

I don't know anything about getting it to work in Win 7 or what other tools can be used to have the same feature. (I am still on XP)

All I can suggest is that you check your settings and make sure you have the correct option selected.
 (see attachment in previous post)

I will revise the configuration and comments. nevertheless w7 seems to have the favorite folders management, But I have installed the 64 bits version of filebox eXtender, but fails me very often.

I will revise the configuration. I can't live without the option.

No it's not.

Readyboost is a marketing gimmick Microsoft came up with to soften the blow of complaints about hardware requirements of Vista. It won't do much good, and it won't do any good at all if your swap file is on an SSD drive.

Thanks eleman.

Someone recommend me install the operating system in a SSD drive.
I am customed to install several times the operating systems. But microsoft forums call me fool.
Now is not permitted to install windows seven several times in the same pc. One license for each install.
I also think about the possibility to have virtual machines specialized. Downloads and communications, by example.
But I suppose is not possible to do because is against the license.

But SSD drive are too expensive. I was thinking about 300 GB of space for the system, and the data in other disks as usual

I really don't understand why I can't install several times the same system in the same machine.

Even microsoft forums tells me that w7 always install on c:, so if not possible to install in other letters.

I am trying windows 7.
Under xp I use Filebox eXtender from hyperionics and FileMenu Tools from lopesoft.
I think one of these two programs give me opportunity to click in a windows explorer window when the save, save as, open window is open and click in one of the windows explorer windows produces the selection of that windows in the save-save as-open window.

But now in windows 7 I don't get that "position".

Do you know any simple soft for doing this. I am very custom of this feature.

Best Regards

You can just use Task Scheduler to wake the computer for backups and it will go back to sleep after a period of inactivity or you tell the backup program to put it to sleep after a backup, (assuming nobody is logged on)..

I don't think number 2 is possible - the computer needs to wake up so that it can either check there were no changes to the files it was backing up or there were no logons since the last backup.

Possibly the closest you could get to number 2 is have a marker file set when someone logs on and then have the backup program, (or script), check for its existence:
1) It exists - do a backup then clear it.
2) It doesn't exist - go back to sleep.

Logical. That's the point.

I have found, besides Task Scheduler, two soft may be useful for this purpose :

System Scheduler Free

or

KM Wakeup

My motherboard support WOL

For windows 7
I am having problems with SE-DesktopConstructor.
Sometimes don't go in the startup.
Better is portable.
I have used Webshots in the past , but has the limit of 199 wallpapers for collection.
I would like :

a) Assign a folder and its subfolders to a collection or simply scan that folder.
b) add more folder is needed.
c) change every minute, 5, 10, 20 minutes, etc.
d) better is portable
e) Start with the system with no errors.
f) I don't need wallpapers in the cloud or services on the cloud.

Yeap. And I don't want to know about any other program. And from Goldmine don't pay me. I have an old version and installed on a virtual machine a trial : more powerful, more complex, more learning. Not for me. Now I am trying my old version on a windows 7 machine and seems go well.
Of Course there is a lot of other CRM software, and very good.
And free options with best results too.
As all donation coder participants knows is just a question of time and effort to find a program to do what we want free.

Suspension and windows 7.
For me is new.
 ;D
But come with prior systems.
I usually don turn off my pc's because of the security copies all day and night long.
But...

I would like to save some dollars in the light invoice.....

So...

Yesterday I observed my pc with the ventilators off. Suspended. Perfect.

But I would like a soft for :

1. Turn on my pc when a security copy is necessary or programmed. When an action is programmed.

2. Mantain suspension if during the last security copy the pc was not used...

3. Automation with the suspended mode in general.

Best Regards

Note :
I use for security copies

Periodic revision of residents.

By one cause or others I have many residents at the same time.
I am trying windows 7 and happen the same as with windows xp pro.
So I will buy more RAM, but ....

I would like a soft to control automatically the processes are running and check if is stopped or not.
If stoppen launch that process again.

By example.
suppose I must have running :
middlebutton.ahk
ditto.exe
ReOpen.exe
FileBX.exe
FindAndFunRobot.exe
ATNotes.exe
PowerTray.exe
CreateShortCutsIn.exe
etc.

How can I do a script for checking this from time to time....

Even, is possible, checking windows services.

Best Regards

ReRun 2.4.0.0 Added code to get the program path and icon of a 64 bit process when running on a Windows 64 bit OS.  I haven't looked into getting the command line args yet. It may not be worth the performance hit as most of the time the target app will be launched without args.

But at least now it works reasonably well under Wow64.

Inmediately adopted.
In these moments I am trying a 64 bits version of windows 7
