Find And Run Robot / Re: Latest FARR Release v2.217.01 - Mar 20, 2015
« Last post by tomos on March 20, 2015, 08:56 AM »
I havent used this machine in about a week which maybe affects the results - keeping that in mind:

mru plugin using mrua shows:
     a) recent files from today and yesterday
     b) recent files from previous time machine was used (last week)

historyr shows:
     1) recent files from today and yesterday
     2) dopus and dopus viewer exe (from 64bit programme folder)**
     3) lots of exe files from my download folder mostly dating around 2012 - and most of which (or maybe all) have not been accessed in years (FWIW see shot below)

** It is not showing other apps I used since install of beta.

where can I check the settings for it?

thanks mouser

will be interesting to try historyr - I use FARR plugin: FARR Most Recently Used a fair bit (but in a very basic manner: typing mrua to show all most recently used files).

# 5 - fast image browsing - or more specifically, fast thumbnail loading - can be extremely important if you're browsing large folders, or also displaying content from sub-folders.
-
My favourite from that POV is ExifPro, but note:
browsing folders is not particularly user-friendly (wont show tree view above current folder)
costs ~ $20

I would ideally want a viewer to be tied into my file-manager - but none of the file-managers have done what it takes to make a decent basic image-viewer (I'm talking about an image-viewer as a separate window showing images, from which you can easily open the image you're viewing in an external editor and/or copy the path of the image).

I cant comment about image organisers (I do own one, but havent used it enough to comment on it - there is an image orgnaizer thread here on dc, if you do a search you may find some helpful info - I have some more comments about ExifPro there).

Living Room / Re: Sorry, Ebooks. These 9 Studies Show Why Print Is Better
« Last post by tomos on March 09, 2015, 03:58 PM »
Well, the difference in that approach is the fact that when you purchase a DVD and/or a CD, on the physical media, you have the digital media.  It's just a different mode of distribution.

Books don't have that advantage.  And I think that's one of the reasons they started offering physical media with digital- they'd rather give it to you in their format than you ripping it and getting it in a format they can't control.

yeah, I dont see it happening - would be nice though...

^ how about buy a book and get a free ebook 'rip'  - like Amazon are doing for CD's

Screenshot - 2015-03-09 , 21_00_44.png

and use both.

FWIW, at the moment, I'm working on a reference volume about an archaeological excavation:
it might never appear online or in digital format, but the illustrations will be downloadable - and also a spreadsheet with all 'features' referenced in some detail, including relative links to the related (searchable) illustrations.
Idea being that one would work with both the hardcopy and the digital information:
  • Read about a feature of interest (there's almost 3,000 :p) in the book;
  • go to spreadsheet for overview of info related to the feature:
  • click link for the feature - relevant PDF illustration opens; search for feature number, click to zoom in

It's not high-tech in any way, but it already makes for a very efficient way of working with a large project like this.

I don't know...  Seems more logical that if you checkmark a folder, then the contents should get checked....  YOu could then (optionally) uncheck some.

yeah - that's what me and mouser meant
although I see he's more interested in folders:

A flat source file list may be useful in some cases, but not in my case -- I need to be able to quickly choose large folders from a hierarchy for copying.
2934
Or why not simply use Ctrl+[that-key-whatever-it's-called]
(it looks like the grave accent key http://en.wikipedia....rg/wiki/Grave_accent
odd - the US keyboard doesnt seem to have the accent going the other direction)

I have a quertz keyboard, but use the equivalent keys with FARR -- Ctrl+^ (which is same location as your "`")

Living Room / Re: I'd like to get a Windows Tablet: help me decide.
« Last post by tomos on March 06, 2015, 04:19 PM »
MS is just deliberately not addressing this.  And they have more things like this.  Like their pen technology on the surface tablets has issues that take forever to be addressed.  So MS is just being annoying...saving all these fixes and features for upcoming upgrades...Windows 10, 11, etc.
Maybe it will be touted as the BIG feature for windows 10.

^I obviously have no idea what MS are up to here, but this today made me think:
I was working with a Vista machine earlier today, and it still had the '[create] New Folder' option hidden in the second level of the context menu. I dont know exactly how many years it took them to get that in the toolbar in Windows Explorer, but I think anyone that can take so long, to make something so universally required easily accessible - well, I wonder: can they have gotten much better in terms of giving us what we want?

Sure, they do it occasionally, in certain departments, but overall MS is like this sluggish snail that's maybe eventually going to give you what you want.   Maybe.
2938
from the XY forum link:
Only thing to keep in mind: if you tick a folder AND any of its contents, these contents will be counted twice.

Odd, XYplorer seems to use the same system as Dopus (see image from above XY thread):
if you tick a folder, it's contents are selected, but the tickboxes for the files are left blank.

Maybe there is an advantage to that approach, but the disadvantage (as said above) is that when you want to select, say, 98% of the contents - you will have to tick each file individually - instead of simply deselecting a couple of files.

It's my default search engine - but I do often find it weak, and resort then to Bing or Google.
On my desktop machine I also occasionally use StartPage (https://www.startpage.com/) -
but cant remember offhand how good it is.

I saw a couple of other search engines mentioned in connection with a FARR plugin just this week - must see if I can root them out...

General Software Discussion / Re: online tool or software to create a treeview
« Last post by tomos on March 05, 2015, 05:33 PM »
I'm not particularly recommending InfoQube for a quick and dirty solution - although this is reasonably easy to do **
But any PIM should be easily able to create an outline, and many will do export of some sort.
I'd also recommended the free ToDoList to Contro lately - not sure what type of export that does though. (Search for that here for link.)

**
use portable version:
Create a new file
menu: View>Grids>New Grid for a new empty tab (grid/view)
Create new item - I think Enter or EnterX2 are the default shortcuts (look under menu:Item>New) / Ctrl+Enter for new sub-item
Alt+Arrowkeys to move items (entries) up/down; Alt+left/right-arrows to move it's level in the hierarchy
Formatting as expected (e.g. Ctrl+B) and colour background via context menu

Export:
Select all
menu: Grid>Export to a webpage
Use the 'Settings' tab (try default and then experiment)
Save and preview will create file and open in default browser - to enable the collapsing/expanding, you need to open in IE (for the ActiveX)

Something like the attached would be nice. It's a html export from InfoQube.
open in IE - allow ActiveX controls (as asked bottom of page by IE) [edit] new version also works (expand/collapse) in PaleMoon [/edit]
-
You can then expand and collapse levels as wished. It's not clear though which levels are expandable when they are collapsed.
I used use this feature a lot - but havent in a couple of years so I'm no longer familiar with the settings.

Here's what you should see when fully expanded:

Tried it a while ago but I already have Artrage and it seems to do pretty much the same:

Curious: is Artrage also vector based?

Do you mean you want [1] to create a text 'tree' listing of an *actual* folder hierarchy -
or do you [2] want to create a 'mock' hierarchy.
(Or is it something else again?)

And 'extract a screenshot of it' ?? - you're hopping all over the place here :tellme:
I think it might help if you explained in more detail what exactly you want to do.

Reading again, it sounds like #2 -
why not use any PIM or any programme that'll allow you to create an outline?

had a very quick look at netbooks in a shop today.

And yeah,
10.1" is way too small for windows desktop :-)
13.3" netbooks were the first size that seemed really usable to me for desktop.
14.6" was the next size up that they had in stock - it's a nice size, but not very portable.

With netbooks @13.3" and smaller, the 16:9 ratio kills it for me - it's just soooo narrow heightwise :(
Many of the builds have space for a 16:10 screen, space that was covered with glass in some models - dead space unfortunately e.g.

V3-371_Teaser.jpg

(review link in image - I'm not sure why they think it's reasonable @ €500, but that's unfortunately the state of affairs here - but that's veering very off-topic...)

I've had mixed feelings about the discounts/giveaways in recent years, for two reasons:  First, without a consistent, sustained effort that lasts indefinitely, it doesn't gain traction or attention.  The second has more to do with an existential struggle with the nature of the site, and what we should be focusing on, and what we do well, and the (non-financial) costs associated with trying to do too many different things..  While at the same time it pains me that this is yet another example of folks volunteering to do something for the benefit of the site and me being less than enthusiastic.  This gets at part of what i think we need to find a solution to.

You mention a few things there that jump out at me:

         # the nature of the site
         # what we should be focusing on
         # and what we do well

could you expand on these a bit?

FWIW, like many people, I'm often better at developing existing ideas, than at coming up with new ones - that's (also) part of why I'm interested in how you see things here.
2949
When are you planning for the fundraiser to begin?  And would we be interested in discounts/giveaways to go along with the fundraiser?  The well has pretty much dried up, but I might be able to get some of our discount heroes to help us out...

I can think of a suggestion (for a discount) but maybe best not to start making suggestions here?
