Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: move small dialog windows to cursor position
« Last post by nudone on August 27, 2006, 12:57 AM »
i agree - as that is really the point of dialogmove.

i only thought about the animated move idea as i have one or two windows that appear in the center of the screen AND then jump to the cursor position. most of the time the dialog window appears directly under the cursor without first appearing in the center of the screen.

it's the very few times that the dialog window appears in the center first and then jumps that looks a bit odd - i just thought it might be a bit more pleasing on the eye if in these cases the dialog travelled across the screen instead of jumped.

it is a very small annoyance and i wouldn't expect jgpaiva to consider it seriously unless he was very bored and seeking a problem to solve. well, if jgpaiva thinks it's a bad idea anyway then i'd be happy to forget about it.

the previous suggestion of dialog jumping so that highlighted button rests under cursor is really what i'd like to see implemented.

i feel bad about suggesting more but i thought this might be interesting - possibly pointless.

it's only a cosmetic thing anyway.

instead of the dialog window 'jumping' to the mouse cursor position, how about the dialog window was seen to move to the cursor position, i.e. there was a little bit of animation involved - say one or two steps that the window would travel along a path until it landed under the cursor.

i can imagine this looking quite nice if it was smooth enough but it would probably look horrible if it was too jerky.

nod32 doesn't appear to think there is a problem either - even with all options turned on and forced to scan the system32 folder.

it's a pity, isn't it.

here's the output from the first run using the Ikarus dos scanner:

c:\windows\system32\directx.exe - Signatur 'Net-Worm.Win32.Mytob.DE' gefunden
c:\windows\system32\pxcpya64.exe - Virenverdächtige Programmsequenz gefunden
c:\windows\system32\pxcpyi64.exe - Virenverdächtige Programmsequenz gefunden
c:\windows\system32\pxinsa64.exe - Virenverdächtige Programmsequenz gefunden
c:\windows\system32\pxinsi64.exe - Virenverdächtige Programmsequenz gefunden

so, looks like the problem might be getting worse. i'll now run another scan in safemode...

(grisoft avg is still completely unaware that there is a problem.)

Living Room / iexplore.exe - be warned
« Last post by nudone on August 26, 2006, 07:41 AM »
my machine is currently infected with a trojan or something.

after startup i have a new file 'iexplore.exe' trying to access the internet - each time i delete the file and then restart, the said file has moved to a new location (please don't start announcing that iexplore.exe is internet explorer - this particular file that keeps appearing is definitely something nasty).

i looked around the web and there appears to be plenty of confusion and not particularly brilliant advice about getting rid of it - virus and trojan scanners seem to be unable to find the file if the comments on other forums i've read are correct.

here is the most helpful page i've found that deals with the problem http://www.jimmyr.co...E_Virus_230_2006.php (not actually tried his method yet but will do in a minute).

i wouldn't make such a post but this is the first time my machine has been infected for a long time - and i can't even remember a time that my scanning software seemed completely oblivious to the fact that the machine is infected.

you could try learning this http://www.youtube.c.../watch?v=eqSrGciObbs

(looks like i've found something to do during the Great DC GTD Experiment.)

anyone know of a good tutor?

Hi

I don't know if this helps, but here another related freeware
"WinSplit.NET"
http://reptils.free.fr/index_en.htm

nice idea using the number keypad to position windows. gridmove still requires keyboard hotkey input - hopefully using the 'winkey' (hint, hint, jgpaiva).

winsplit.net is worth trying if you want the keyboard control for the time being - unfortunately it did crash whilst i was trying it out but until that point it seemed pretty good. it could do with user customisable keys.

Living Room / Re: HD noise distracting
« Last post by nudone on August 22, 2006, 06:27 AM »
earplugs.

hard drive noise drives me insane. i went crazy a few months ago and bought all the 'quiet' kit i could afford. so, two samsung spinpoints (meant to be super quiet) and two raptor drives (quiet spinning but super loud clicking).

all well and good, but now after only about 7 months the samsung(s) have started making a very irritating high pitch noise - whenever they so choose to do so. fantastic.

so, all i can see is you can have the most silent machine in the world, fanless, water cooled, whatever. but what can you do about hard drive noise when the noise comes from inside the drive case - nothing.

only solution i can think of is to put the hard drives away from where you are sitting. you can't really put modern machines in a cupboard because of the heat they'll produce so it looks like it requires putting the machine in another room with cables running through the walls. absolutely ridiculous measures just to have a silent hard drive. and no, a hard drive case enclosure won't help - i've got those already and the high pitch noise easily escapes through them.

so use earplugs or background music - or maybe just go back to have noisy fans.

sorry, that's not really answering your question, i've just accepted that hard drives are swines. thankfully, only a few more years to go and hard drives will be obsolete.

thanks, that's useful to know, dallee, but it's not anything remotely like the scoring system we'll hopefully be discussing/introducing later on.

m_s, there's something about the old analogue ways of doing things that just seem to work sometimes. maybe because they are so simple, so portable and 'switch on' instantly. i would also think that their tactile nature kind of means more - you can connect to a physical object more than a program - i'm sure that must help in associating the right kind of mind state. perhaps there is also an element of 'being in control' of the analogue device whereas a computer program can tend to feel that is has control over you.

it's kind of reassuring to see other people trying the digital way and then going back to the traditional paper and pen - certainly makes me feel less like someone that gives up for no good reason. i'd love to be able to make use of 'mylife organized' rather than just stare at its icon on my desktop - maybe the GTD experiment will make that possible.
2840
okay, i shall also order both of the Forster books later today.

from what i've read so far on his website i do like what he has to say. he's been through the GTD process and realised it isn't perfect - something many of us will relate to. he also has ideas that will be common i'm sure to those of us that have pondered on how to change our bad habits.

mouser will be developing the game scoring, or whatever it eventually turns out to be, but it will depend on what we learn and suggest as a group.

it has been suggested that we all attempt to live by the common GTD 'rules' for the first month of the experiment and then we can discuss what a scoring based method will require. the second or final month of the experiment will then hopefully be performed using the 'scoring program' for those of us that feel like using it.

the most important part will simply be the taking part as a group and hopefully finding that sharing the experience helps get things done. all being well, the scoring program will provide a solo method of sticking to GTD when there is no one else there to provide encouragement.

« Last post by nudone on August 21, 2006, 01:01 AM »
not wishing to rush you, jgpaiva, but here are a few more suggestions - one of which might seem like heresy.

i'd still very much like to see the dialog window move so that it came to rest with the highlighted button under the mouse cursor, but i think that some windows don't have a highlighted button - well, it looks like that to me - maybe they are 'in focus' but they just aren't 'highlighted'. anyway, if it's true that some dialog windows don't have a highlighted button could you make it so that dialogmove looks for the 'okay' or 'yes' or 'save' button instead.

and here's the heretical idea. how about if dialogmove worked exactly as it does now and then the mouse cursor jumped the final couple of inches to the highlighted button? i admit i've not really thought about this suggestion so it might just be a really annoying method to use.

as always, if you can make these features user selectable it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

urlwolf mentioned Mark Forsters self-motivation website and books elsewhere on the forum.

it appears that Mr. Forster has also thought about a point scoring method of trying to get things done http://www.markforst...et/index.php?view=64

i wonder if this is going to be a common idea in future as people find that current self-motivation techniques don't provide the miracle cure that people expect.

The Getting Organized Experiment of 2006 / passing the buck (part 1)
« Last post by nudone on August 20, 2006, 07:29 AM »
here's a question and an observation i have...

it's just occurred to me that i have several list taking 'devices'. i have notebooks from years ago, bits of scrap paper - also from years ago, note taking software - things like 'texnotes' and 'mylife organized' and i'll even include 'surfulator'. i've a pocket pc - with lists on it, of course and then there's ms outlook. and, there's always that carousel of lists/ideas floating around in my head at any given moment in time.

so, what's my point?

i've used for a brief period and then abandoned each of these note/list recording devices (except for my own head) and then tried to find another method of keeping the information stored. i've put the blame onto the device for not magically transforming me into a 'doer' rather than a 'dreamer'. i fear that this is just going to happen again with the next method i take up.

the problem is that i'm just rewriting the lists - maybe this is good as it allows me to weed things out - but it obviously wastes time as there really shouldn't be a need to keep blaming the 'device' and then moving onto a new one. i've now reached the point that i've become sceptical that a list taking method/device will work - which is not something i like as i'm obviously being prejudiced and blaming the tools rather than the workman (which is me in this case).

i'm wondering if this is a common reason for GTD failure?

if anyone knows of a way that i can stop blaming the tools then please let me know. thanks.
2845
urlwolf, i think you have revealed a very valuable source with Mark Forster. i have to agree with his anti to-do list theory. i'd say that's exactly why i don't use 'mylife organized' - or maybe i'm just not organized enough to actually use the program.

i'd been thinking for some time that with all the best intentions that you might have, there are still going to be times when you just cannot, or just will not, do the task you were expected to do. and there are times when you would simply prefer to be doing something else - welcome procrastination. it looks like Forster has thought about these lapses and allowed for them - so that's good reasoning in my book.

oh, i really, really hope we discover something really useful through all of this.

the books you recommend by Mark Foster look interesting, urlwolf. the only problem is that the thought of reading two books before i get anything done is already frustrating me - this might just be the mood i'm in today.

i'll think about ordering them in a few minutes - or maybe i'll just go and bang my head against a wall for a bit - and then order the books.

by the end of all this i really hope we have found a ridiculously simple way of getting things done.

unfortunately i don't seem to be able to get the 'run' grid working. i've tried a couple of different programs to try and run but i can't even get the title of the program to appear in the grid.

here's an example of what i've tried:

  TriggerTop   = [Monitor1Top]
  TriggerLeft  = [Monitor1Left]
  TriggerBottom= [Monitor1Bottom]
  TriggerRight = [Monitor1Left] + [Monitor1Width] /2

  GridTop   = Run
  GridLeft  = C:\Program Files\Maxthon\Maxthon.exe
  GridBottom= Maxthon
  GridRight = C:\Program Files\Maxthon

i tried a similar thing with 'notepad++'. am i just doing it completely wrong?

also, the grid highlight not appearing on top problem only seems to happen when i'm using that 'supergrid' i made. it still has the problem but i wouldn't spend any time trying to get it to work, jgpaiva, i think i'm tired of that layout. thanks for trying though.
