BTW it's all vector... and a WIRED article says it's all hand traced.
Looky there, somebody did my experiment already- this digg article links to a tutorial using quick time pro.
And here's the word on the technique: http://en.wikipedia....kly_(film)#Animation (including the reference to 500 man-hours per minute...)
Looks like they only traced "key frames" and had their little proggy fill in the, um, filler. I remember stuff like this happening in 80's era cartoons where certain frames were drawn to represent scenery and character placement at specific time intervals and later the in-between cels filled in at outsourced foreign animation factories. This is why 80's era cartoons look stiff compared to earlier stuff (Why does bugs bunny only move his arms when he talks? How come G.I.joe never ducks?)
Anyways... fascinating.

I remember seeing Keanu's first films "Rivers Edge" and "The Prince of Pennsylvania" and thinking he was a good actor as long as the role was something along the lines of who he naturally is, much like Christian Slater who, in my opinion, has the same problem. They're both really good in certain roles, but Dean Jones or Gary Oldman they ain't.

Yes it is Rotoscoping and I heard that they used special technology to create the first frame renders that were then edited (at 500 hours/minute, eek!). Why do it, you may ask? Probably save a few grand on props and lighting, and if the special effects turn out cartoony, all the better!
I wonder... how would a home-brew version look? Like if you ripped a few seconds of your favorite video out to bitmaps, traced them with say, AutoTrace, Flash, Xara Xtreme or some such, and re-compiled them to video. It probably wouldn't look as good, but sure would be a cool experiment.

Not my cup of tea, and I'm not really the movie-going type anymore, but the technology is fascinating, so I though I'd post it here...

have you?  :o

Robust and discreet Autosave should be a feature offered in ANY app that involves document creation and modification. I learned that the first time I accidentally kicked the power box which was unwisely installed under our stations in high school computer class.

(Scene: Circa 1984 classful of Apple IIe's)

me- *kick*
computers- *bzt...*
me- "oops..."
computer class teacher- "Everybody remembered to save their work, right?"
class- *glaring at yours truly* "umm... no..."

I've had two machines blow up on me and a disk lose its master file table and have had to re-activate XP (on my wife's computer) each time, but it has been surprisingly trouble-free. Have you tried simply calling Microsoft and reciting your (previously) valid license codes? I'd be surprised if they refused you a new activation code, especially since you have the originals...

Whats the script that does that?

We love *nix but we hate Linux.
I caught that too...

Stat scripts can be fun, for example Homokaasu's Gematriculator says donationcoder.com is 35% evil and 65% good.

Wow, talk about a can of worms...
If women hadn't entered the workforce in droves, what would be the average current rate of pay for most careers? My guess is it would be a lot higher than it is now.
I and my single-income-family friends have pondered the same question, but in hushed tones and out of sight of the N.O.W. spy cams. :)

I don't have the figures to back it up (so tag this as My Honest Opinion), but I bet you can partly blame WWII. As we all know, the circumstances of that war drove women into the work force and then the subsequent "baby boom" after the war ended probably made dual-income an attractive option especially since there were suddenly three things influencing economics, 1 - women trained in factory and service work, 2 - a whole army (literally) of more-or-less hard-working men many of whom returned with highly specialized military technology training and 3 - more mouths to feed. No way a "normal" job market could accomadate those simultaneously without a cultural shift.

BTW- My family went single-income about 3 years ago and we are actuallly doing better. Go figure. I think its because my wife is handling ALL the finances now, and I am a richer man for it.

P.S. On a side note, I just hit your website, app103 and i was #1337 on your web counter  ;D

Correct me if i'm wrong, but most video cards have tweaking apps that allow you to adjust gamma, hue, rgb levels, etc. you could use that to reduce the colors to green and black. I have also seen third party apps to do that, but YMMV, Caveat Emptor, etc.

i especially like "Jorge Lopez' " comparisons between Windows and Linux...
...As I am sitting here writing this column, my computer is busily defragging my hard drive, running my virus scanner, and I'm being shown a list of all the latest MS security patches that are being remotely installed on my machine today. Why doesn't Linux come with any defragmenting tools or virus scanners or Active Backdoor Update like you get with Windows? These are all must-have features for me...

So i was looking for a stand-alone very (VERY) simple database program that would let me add and organize phone numbers, addresses, etc. and did not want any of the current fashionable PIM's or such. I wanted text in sortable squares with support for simple macros and not a penny more, get my drift? To make a short google search sound even shorter, I ended up at http://tinyapps.org/text.html and looking at their offerings of spreadsheet/database apps....

Hmmm... VisiCalc? You mean THE VisiCalc? (cobwebs... clearing...) NO WAY!!

Yep, and here's the proof: http://www.bricklin....ory/vcexecutable.htm
...and the story behind it: http://static.userla...chive/msg008583.html
...and reaction to such a singularly cool event: http://www.bricklin....postingreactions.htm
Seems others have followed suit and authors of groundbreaking software of yesteryear have re-acquired distribution rights to the fruits of their labors, check it out: http://www.bricklin....story/othersites.htm

Maybe some of you's know of similar efforts and would like to pass it along...

I think calling the New Yorker satire is a kind of satire in itself. Good one, Moerl

I had a few referenced in my other post, one (shelley the republican) was a right-wing satire but I cannot for the life of me find a left-wing satire site of the same caliber. Perhaps the right-wingers are too stodgey to pull such a lark? Please help me in my quest...

haha Carol I did the same sort of thing to my boss once. His name was Dennis and I replaced the error message with me saying "Don't touch me there, Dennis!" (remember Mac's cute little round microphone?) so every time he made a mistake working up time sheets it would say that! He found it amusing until the General Manager wanted to use his computer.  :o

Living Room / Satire on the web
« Last post by Edvard on June 28, 2006, 12:06 PM »
On this thread there was a brief discussion of "satirical" websites. Sites that seem legitimate, but then it is revealed that the purpose is to Satirize a legitimate issue, people group, religion, political ideology, etc.
How about a thread for such sites, as they can be at once rollickingly funny, flat stupid or thought provoking in a how-dare-they-say-that-and-live sort of way, but mostly fun. (and if it's political or religious, include a disclaimer...)
I'll start out with a real fun one: Gobler toys!
