DC Gamer Club / Re: Buy a mystery game with GOG's Indie Piñatas!
« Last post by Deozaan on September 11, 2015, 02:33 PM »
Yeah, it's an interesting promotion. I kind of like the idea of it, though I don't think I'll be participating in it this time. As little as $3 is, this month's budget is already stressed out enough as it is without spending money on what is essentially gambling for a good game.

There's a part of it that seems like a capsule machine. Stick in a quarter, get a capsule with a toy! Except in this case it's a black box. You don't get to see your potential prizes. If they listed all the possible results, I might be able to make a more informed decision as to whether or not to play the game.

But for now it seems like throwing $3 into a black hole and hoping something good comes out.

DC Gamer Club / Buy a mystery game with GOG's Indie Piñatas!
« Last post by Deozaan on September 11, 2015, 11:51 AM »
GOG is currently running a promotion where you buy a "piñata" for $3 and it will contain a random indie game ranging in value from $9.99 to $44.99.

While their "randomization" algorithm gives priority to games you don't already own, if you happen to get a game you do already own, it will be a giftable copy.

They're also running a regular sale where certain games are discounted a certain amount.

I have a feature request!

Support for embedded Gfycats!

Cat Tax
That way links such as this one don't use up as much bandwidth and can be paused, rewound, or played in slow motion, etc.

General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 10 Tips

One thing that I've gone through on both of my machines that have it is that I can't seem to figure out how to set the stupid network to private the first time.  It has to be there... but for some reason, I just overlook it!  And it's a pain to change it normally.

I recently encountered this same issue when what I'm sure was a private network somehow got changed to public (maybe when I messed with my privacy settings...).

Anyway, I found this solution, which is much easier than editing the registry:

win10network.gif

Basically, it seems you need to enable the option to "find PCs and devices on your network" in your homegroup to make it private. If you have that option disabled, it's considered a public network.

General Software Discussion / Re: What online services do you pay for?

FWIW, I currently use the free nsupdate.info service, it's open source so I could grab the code and host it on one of my VPNs if I felt the need.  I have a Powershell script that checks my IP every two hours and updates both nsupdate.info and SmartDNS should the IP have changed.

Your post prompted me to look into nsupdate.info so I did and I couldn't figure out how to use it.

My router is configured to automatically connect to my Dyn account and update my IP as needed. I don't have to worry about it, and my PC doesn't even have to be running for my IP to update.

I think that Reference Overlay Tool would be sort of up the alley... but it doesn't show text, it shows images.

That's what I went looking for, but I couldn't remember the name of it and all I could find in my searches of previous NANYs was ImgFloat. :D

This section goes for some quick posts without a big writeup:

- Play as a ghost in PacMan! (Amazing that Namco isn't grumpy! I think I saw someone else got yelled at by Nintendo.)
http://ludumdare.com...review&uid=57513
The web version doesn't seem to work though. I had to download the Windows version.
Rated Phoenix Easy if you use strategy.

I played a game like this many years ago called "PacMan vs." It was up to 4 or 5 players (can't remember for sure). One player would play as PacMan and the others would play as the ghosts. The Pac-Man player could see the entire screen but the ghost players could only see within a relatively small circle around themselves.

Humble Bundle has a pretty nice "pay what you want" offer going on Tom Clancy titles for the next 5 or so days.

Might be worth a look if it's the sort of game you like. Link here.

Erm... Does this have anything to do with GOG or Bethesda? I'm not seeing the connection. It's a cool deal and all. I'm just wondering why it got posted here.

I bet mouser would like this.

Living Room / TSA's master keys leaked, 3D printed
« Last post by Deozaan on September 10, 2015, 11:26 AM »
The TSA is learning a basic lesson of physical security in the age of 3-D printing: If you have sensitive keys—say, a set of master keys that can open locks you’ve asked millions of Americans to use—don’t post pictures of them on the Internet.

A group of lock-picking and security enthusiasts drove that lesson home Wednesday by publishing a set of CAD files to Github that anyone can use to 3-D print a precisely measured set of the TSA’s master keys for its “approved” locks—the ones the agency can open with its own keys during airport inspections. Within hours, at least one 3-D printer owner had already downloaded the files, printed one of the master keys, and published a video proving that it opened his TSA-approved luggage lock.

I don't think there's much of a stronger argument against intentionally putting in backdoors to any form of security--including encryption--than this. Once the master/secret key is out, it's over for everybody!

Try now (remember to hit F5 to reload new css).

Works great! Nice work!

Quoting posts with attachments still has problems though...

I tried out deepdream.in last night and it said I needed to wait 5.5 hours. It's been probably close to 20 hours and it still says "almost ready."

I think it's borked.

I'm running WinPrivacy on Windows 10... and I just got the weirdest request for internet access.

C:\Program Files\WindowsApps\Microsoft.BingFinance_4.5.168.0_x86__8wekyb3d8bbwe\Microsoft.MSN.Money.exe

I don't even have money installed!

Money is an app that comes with Windows 10.

My guess is that it's trying to update the "Live Tile" info.

I agree. In the (upcoming) age of high DPS screens, I'm finding the default font/size to be quite thin and small. We could do with a thicker font, or the current font being bumped up a couple sizes.

Not so much for the font used in forum posts, but just about everywhere else. Such as the "Quote" links in the top right of each post, or the "breadcrumbs" links at the top of the page, etc.

Was making all hyperlinks bold chosen to get larger message-titles?, as those are also hyperlinks. I expect those would have their own css style.

it was one to make it easier to identify clickable links.

Ok I have switched to a default of non-bolded hyperlinks; i still bold them in a few places (like inside posts) to make them more readable, but elsewhere back to non-bolded.
Remember to hit F5 to force a re-load of the css file to see the changes.

Let me know if you folks like this look better or worse.

IMO the bolded links in posts are still hard to see because their color is very close to black. They should be more obviously blue or some contrasting color to the default text color so that they stand out.

EDIT: After further investigation, I've realized it's the "visited" link color that is hard to distinguish from the normal black color.

Some sort of Jedi power?
