General Software Discussion / Re: VMWare Player 7.0 Released
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 03, 2014, 05:34 AM »
I switched to VirtualBox back when my VMware 5 license expired. I did not want to keep paying the upgrade costs when there was a free alternative that worked well enough.

There were some minor differences in features and speed, but for my use it really didn't matter.

I've used VirtualBox in the past.  It worked fine. This last time around I think I saw a post about how easy it was to create a VM in Player and tried it.  If the Guest OS is in the list then it's ice cream.

For Windows systems I prefer using [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiren%27s_BootCD]Hiren's BootCD.

Does it support UEFI secure boot GPT etc?  I'm reading at the home page now but I thought I'd ask you also since I suspect you know quite a bit about it.  :)

You may be too stoned if...

You know someone is tripping if...

They encounter a table and chair.  There's about a one foot gap between them.  They stop to decide should they:

a) try to walk through the gap without moving either
b) move the chair to make more space and walk through the larger gap
c) walk around the chair
d) ask a friend what to do

General Software Discussion / Re: Multi Process Support comes to Firefox Nightly
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 02, 2014, 11:20 AM »
Often I've installed a new version of FF and gotten snappy response, for a while.  I hope this nightly breaks the pattern.  So far I like it quite a bit.  I set the disk cache to 1024 MB Max.  I just checked it and it is actually using it.  The usage was 400 some odd MB before I cleared it.  Other versions of FF with the same setting tended to use less than 100 MB cache.

Here's hoping for the best.  :)

VMWare Player 7.0 Released.

I just installed it and am running W7 x64 VM to post this.  So far I don't see any difference other than it asks you to update VMWare Tools.
I had 6.x on with 5 VMs.  It installed apparently without losing anything.  The VMs are still there.  :)

btw I read in one of the articles on Nightly multitasking that initially all the tabs will run in one process and the UI in another.  I guess that's why it just shows Nightly once in the Task Manager.  The article says in the future they expect each tab to run in a separate process.  This would be similar to chrome but FF may have a few of their own wrinkles.  :)

Where I'm confused is there seems to be only one process running in TM even though I have the setting for multiprocess use enabled.  Strange.

I've never worked in a room full of coders.  But I would tend to think sessions where they just type in a flurry of working code are routines they've done so many times they could just paste them in from their code snippets.  But they want to show off.  :)

There was a guy in my analyst group who was also a concert pianist.  He liked to type at top speed to show off this finger dexterity.  But he never let anyone time him that I know of.  He just liked to see the text fill up the screen.  Also he didn't care about typos.  :)

+1 for programming naked! It keeps unwanted visitors/interruptions to a bare minimum.. ;)

Not to mention game programmers would gain direct access to the joystick.  ;)

N.A.N.Y. 2015 / Re: Ideas Wanted!
« Last post by MilesAhead on December 01, 2014, 11:47 AM »
Finally made it back with what I think would be a great idea...at least for the Linux users out here.  A sed trainer/tester.  SED uses regex expressions extensively, but most/all testers I have found show the regex as not matching, when (in fact) it does.  I don't know if this is because it is a different version of regex, errors in the tester, or something else.

Ideally, what I would like to see is something where you point to a file to upload (or paste it in if it is a windows utility, which would be fine) then type in a sed statement.  It would then show what the output would be without actually altering the file itself.

This idea came from a lot of Linux scripts I have been writing for work lately - scripts that must often alter existing configuration files.  sed is a perfect tool for this, but it takes extensive time to research the proper regex to apply, only to find out it isn't exactly right.  Moreover, once I DO find the right regex expression, making sure the replacement (most commonly), or other sed action, reacts properly is more trial and error.

For those unaware of the ever-powerful sed utility in Linux, this seminal work by Bruce Barnett provides a great detailed overview:

http://www.grymoire.com/Unix/Sed.html

That said, reading it and doing it correctly (remembering all the rules, exceptions, switches, etc) are completely different, even when working with it on a regular basis.  Hence a tool that would test, and perhaps even suggest solutions to find targeted text could be imminently helpful to linux scripters everywhere.

+1.  I think I would find it useful.  I've used sed here and there but not nearly enough as I could have.  As you say, the trial and error with substitutions can be time consuming.  A tool such as you describe would be very cool.

I'm trying the 64 bit Portable Nightly from here:
http://www.mozilla64...efox-64-bit-portable

So far so good.  But it only shows "nightly.exe" in Task Manager.  I have 10 tabs open.  You would think that would be enough to trigger multi-whatever?  :)

Edit:  Logging into Sync worked with most things.  FEBE doesn't seem to like it though. Any extensions Sync missed I just did Open File to the FEBE folder to install, such as Download Manager.

So far the best impression is that Outlook reacts almost normally even though I'm loading 10 tabs(unchecked the wait until selected to load tab option.)

Edit2:  This is the PortableApps version.  If anyone is unfamiliar with it, I recommend that you do not try to update the browser.  It never works.  It's better just to download the newer zip and unzip on top of the folder.

Edit3:  Just for grins I installed the latest 64 bit nightly, 37.0a10 from http://www.mozilla64bit.com/   It picked up settings from the portable.  It seems a bit snappier.  It still only shows one entry in Task Manager.  But memory used is about 350 MB as opposed to 440 MB or so in Portable doing about the same stuff.  I assume with that much memory it must be running lots of threads or something.  It feels responsive.  I don't notice anything weird yet.  :)

Edit4:  Seems stable enough I set it as default browser.  I haven't watched any videos yet.  But normal browsing seems fine.

Mine is sort of square; it's a super-old Compaq P900 CRT. :)

I hung onto my VX900 as long as I could.  Way too damn heavy.  But I could read web pages without hitting control plus.  :)

I wonder if WinSize2 might do the same.  Although it may take more work to set up your desktop.
The main point of TaskLayout(TL) is to save a set of running apps(and/or opened shell windows) with corresponding positions on the screen to file on disk. When TL restores desktop layout from this file it searches for specified windows/apps running on the desktop. If required application is not found TL will start it using the same command line as it was originally specified. The next step is to restore windows positions on the screen respecting their original size, state and Z-order.
Special handling for shell windows was implemented in TL to allow user to restore properly navigated windows (e.g. folder path C:\, special folders "Control Panel", "Administrative tools").
By the way, restoring of the layout will pick up opened shell windows and reuse them as a part of this layout.

Now you can see that window resizing is only the part of TL's functionality. :)

I understand the specialized function.  WinSize2 is a more general purpose resizer.  But if for some reason the Layout program is not desired one may hack some things together with WinSize2 and perhaps a helper batch or program.  I haven't used WinSize2 in depth.  So I'm not sure how much work is involved.  TL sounds like a nice utility for those who want a consistent work panel of applications.  I don't work that way so have no real incentive to try it though.

Their $10 TaskLayout is also to be found via http://www.task-space.com/

TaskLayout is a small Windows utility which allows to save/restore the desktop layout(a set of specified apps/windows with corresponding positions on the screen) in just a few clicks.

You've been visiting a lot of Windows help forums, eh?

Yeah in fact I joined the Vista forum Jan 2008, even before I found DC.  I've followed it through W7 and W8.  But never having owned any smart phones or tablets I must say I'm dismayed with the current direction Windows has taken.  I'm on W Ten forum but it doesn't run well enough in a VM on my laptop to try very much.  And it's just W8 with a few doodads anyway.

But I can always brush up on Linux or check out others if Windows really drops off the deep end.  :)
With all the specialized Linux distros I wish someone would come up with EyeCandyLinux.  Let's have fun with a free OS that not only works well but looks damn good doing it, is what the copy might say.  :)

Edit: I just found Eye Candy Linux community.

I had a good 16x9 DVD of The Time Machine.  I see now on DDDVD that it's been repackaged as BluRay.  I'm curious how good it looks.  Turner is repackaging many of the classic scifi stuff it seems.

I found this:

youtube link etc..

I don't know about the charging bit.  But the clip you found does have the bit with the apples growing on the trees.  That's what first grabbed my attention.

Instead of the mannequin they should have done the dress changing bit with Yvette Mimieux.  But not to be expected in 1960 unfortunately.  :)

The first time lapse photography I remember seeing was in the George Pal version of The Time Machine

I saw it in the theater when it was first released and was totally fascinated by it(I must have been 9 years old.)  I remember the film got an Oscar for Special Effects.

Edit:  Sorry.  Thought I had the YouTube for it but it wants $2.99.  So I changed the link to the IMDB entry.  :(

I wish, me and my Mrs just took a walk down the Sea Front and then came back through town and half the shops have people queuing up outside them for Black Friday Sales

Ah, I just assumed only Americans were stampeded so easily by marketeers.  :)  My bad.  :)

Happy Thanksgiving to all in the DoCo family - and those who are not!

I never liked eating your kind.
...
The rest of us are far more interested in the veggie side dishes. Especially good since it's all from local farms around where we live.

I have to admit to being carnivorous.  :)  To me a nice dinner is filet mignon with mashed potatoes and gravy. Apple pie and coffee for dessert. I'm afraid to even look at the price of such a meal these days though.  :)

If I was the master of time travel I think I would transport the internet boom back to when gasoline was $.25 a gallon.  If you made 20+ grand a year you would live like a king(at least with a small 'k' anyway.)  :)

I live in England.  We don't have thanksgiving.

You should be thankful for that.  No "Black Friday" store stampede either I bet.

To those who celebrate it, Happy Thanksgiving.  :)  btw turkeys, don't blame me.  I never liked eating your kind.  I once opted for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich over stuffed turkey and mashed potatoes.  Just so the survivors know.  ;)
