I really love this idea, might be especially nice way to make a kind of interactive autobiography/biography of the life of someone you know.

Be nice if someone could recommend some existing software or websites that do this kind of thing.

teegee543 -- it's still supposed to work that way, and it does when you use the alt+digit keys, but i'm guessing you must have the option set to use normal digit keys, as i just tried that and indeed it did open the folder directly.  this is a bug and im fixing it.

keep 'em coming! all of the software on this site thrives from user feature requests (and bug reports) :)

vista capture of rounded windows will be fixed asap.

can you explain crosshairs suggestion a bit more?

Along the same lines as the previous bullet...I would like an option to save my settings. If I ever format my drive I would hate to reconfigure everything. I'm sure there is a way that you can backup the profile though.
all settings for all of my programs are saved in an ini file (i loathe the registry), the only thing i don't remember is if in Vista what directory it saves it too..

I will for sure fix the transparency capture of windows in vista -- and i'll try to do it in the next week or so.

Right now, SC has it's own shadow button (you can also set it to always apply a shadow during capture), but i'll take a closer look at windowclippings and see what else might be useful.

It sounds like Delphi is definitely something to look at for you.

As far as I can tell, Borland is still pursuing a two-track approach to delphi, with support for both native Win32 stuff, and support for .net.  Your choice.  Yes you can create activex and dlls.

Make sure you read this thread, which talks about options to compile the runtime libraries inside your exe:

Nice long read.. good find

Some time ago i noticed that the more "cleaning/repairing" programs i ran, the less stable my windows OS became.
So now i never run any registry cleaners, disk check repairers, etc.

I think the reason is this:
Inside every computer that has Windows OS installed, is a tiny little miniature bill gates.  And when you run these types of programs you make it very angry and it throws a fit and starts trashing things.  That's just my theory,

The amazing games of Nicklas Nifflas Nygren have been posted about several times in the past on the donationcoder forum.  "Within a Dark Forest" remains one of the most charming games ever made.

Now comes word of a brand new game, "Knytt Stories".  This looks like it's built using the same basic engine as a previously released game called Knytt, which doesn't quite live up to the masterpiece of Within a Dark Forest, but is still a fantastic achievement.

What's more, the game now comes with a powerful level editor, so you can create your own stories and levels and share them with others (!).  Hey maybe someone needs to make a Cody level?

As soon as you start this game you immediately know you are playing something special.

General Software Discussion / Re: Anyone Using OmniPage and PaperPort?
« Last post by mouser on August 28, 2007, 02:15 PM »
I haven't used OmniPage but it's gotten good reviews i think.

I am, however, a big fan of PaperPort.  Now i have to warn you i haven't really compared it against other programs, so take this with a grain of salt, but it's one of those programs that just feels right to me.  I don't do too much scanning but everything seems intuitive to me, and i've been very happy with it.  Nice basic tools for straightening scans, organize scans, etc.

Recently i found an abandoned scanner with an ADF (automatic document feeder), and ScanSoft handles it so wonderfully that i wanted to hug the program.  Scans in some sheets, lets you then reverse the stack and scans in the other side while properly collating it, etc.  very nice.

Here's an image of the multiple (ADF) interface:
Screenshot - 8_28_2007 , 2_17_19 PM.png

Last caveat: I do *not* do heavy duty and frequent scanning.. there are a ton of features in PaperPort i never use.  I imagine that if you do a ton of scanning then you'd really want to test other programs and find the one with the most efficient workflow for you.

Yep, ok I know the problem and i think i'll try to have it fixed on the next update.

This works in IE as well...

Actually while this may work for *links*, it does not seem to work for form buttons, which is what the firefox extension does.

Are you on vista?

There's a reason some of the smartest people love opera -- i guess this is just another one of those reasons.

I just wish I knew how to encourage more newsletter readers to participate in the forum
25767
Actually only 46,000 people are on the newsletter -- several hundred get removed each edition because i remove someone as soon as a newsletter email bounces or is challenged by an anti-spam query.
25768
DC probably averages 120 new people signing up per day:
  • I think most do so primarily to download a free license key.
  • Some stay around to participate on the forum (yay!)
  • And about 75% choose to receive our newsletter via email.

ProcessTamer / Re: Process Tamer And Windows Vista
« Last post by mouser on August 28, 2007, 01:32 AM »
Thanks very much for this nice post drwilliams -- I tried in the latest version to add code so Vista would know to run it with administration privileges, etc.  So i'm really glad to hear it is working.

It may be that the configuration program isn't running with such privileges, and now that i think about it, it may be that if not, its going to be editing a different file than the one the PT tray tool loads, so that could be a problem.  Maybe try setting it to run as administrator will solve that problem?

in addition to the menu, you can simply hold the control key while clicking on a submit button to have the form submitted in a new window -- very convenient.

What's the purpose of submitting a form to open up as a new tab?

This is actually a very useful thing.  There are lots of times (let's say when using the quick search function at the top of this forum), where you want to keep the current page open and then open the results of the form submission (search results) in a new tab or new window.  So this addon lets you choose when to keep the current page open and open the results in a new tab.

Sounds like Ryan and I think alike in this area (see https://www.donation...47.msg72764#msg72764 for my description which also extends this approach to the program files directory).

oh that's a cool find, lanux!

just installed it and it works perfectly.  very simple, very useful (i dont like middle mouse button so i hold control and click, nice feature).

i think this SubmitToTab deserves a post of it's own -- if you have time to do it please do, otherwise let me know and i'll post it.

Living Room / Re: Any DC'ers in the Pacific Northwest?
« Last post by mouser on August 27, 2007, 11:58 PM »
if the goal is a pacific northwest gathering, perhaps the question would be better off put directly like:

"if you live in the pacific northwest and would be interested in attending dc gathering, post what city you are from and how far you might be willing to travel to attend"

this approach could work as a general approach to dc gathering announcement threads?

Living Room / Sites Where You Can Converse With Imaginary Characters
« Last post by mouser on August 27, 2007, 10:53 PM »
Our own Nick Pearson set up a page on his website where you can post questions to (and get answers from) the imaginary (don't tell him i said that) bird/duck creature Cody who is the mascot of our site.

I love hearing Cody's answers to questions - he offers a unique perspective on life.  He seems real.

It got me thinking about other sites where you can  speak with imaginary creatures.. Does anyone know any?
