General Software Discussion / Re: ReImage: online Windows repair!

-thanks, Stoic Joker. I have heard of many W7 versions, but when I visit Microsoft's Danish store, I can only choose between Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate. Nothing else. My Windows 2000 was a Professional, and I hated how I always had to answer annoying questions about sharing, so I guess I will stick to Home Premium, but so far only because I don't know what Home Basic is or even how to get it.

-thanks, iphigenie. If I purchase a motherboard, like 4wd suggested, I am entitled to also purchase a W7 disc like Home Premium OEM for $100. I would expect such a disc to strictly be one machine only. I am thinking going that road, just to make sure I have a disc; My close-by shop, where I bought the Vista, will only sell systems without discs. My Vista was such OEM.

W7 Business is best imo.

Is "Business" the same as "Enterprise", or...?

SIW Standalone Freeware Version has been discontinued
-SIW

-the only free one is now with an installer with Open Candy.

Motherboard
Name: MS-7379VP
Manufacturer: FUJITSU SIEMENS
Serial number: To be filled by O.E.M.
Version: 4.0
-Fujitsu Siemens

-not much to learn from. And yes, merely two RAM slots. Used to the max; 2 x 2GB.
I was just hoping it would be possible to add more slots - notice the spelling, o not u.

I would run for a while with just 4GB to see if a RAM upgrade is absolutely necessary,

Instinctual, more RAM is always an absolute necessity..., but of course I am pleased with the idea that W7 is using the full 4GB - I am only seldom consuming more than 2½GB.

Anyway, the prime reason I have been going for Home Premium is that Home Premium is what I already have: Less new things to learn, giving me less to mess up. And sometimes I really do make a mess ;-)

Is it still the Fujitsu Siemens Scaleo Pi 2680 - E01
, then you have x86 or x64 - you don't have a hardware limitation.

I am amazed. THANKS, 4wd ♥

At first, back then, I expected it could run 64-bits, because that was the impression I was given from a post made by someone here at DC. Later on I thought he or I probably had misunderstood something, and that the Scaleo was 32-bits only. Now you are giving me more than just new hope!

You see, I had my hardware tested just yesterday, and the conclusion was that it is a fine machine. Yeah, merely 4GB RAM, and cheap components only, but otherwise fine. And now reading your post, I cannot wait to get my hands on a W7 disc.

But next question is of course, What version should I go for when 4GB RAM is the limit? Can a clever man install more than 4GB? I believe W7 Home Premium can handle 16GB?
:tellme:

Edited:
Anyway, the version that I first downloaded was a 32-bits. It has now been deleted, and I am downloading the 64-bits version of W7 Home Premium.

Sorry, I was too tired to post my previous post, but did it all the same. My machine is not up to it, because Microsoft's tester said my PC is 32-bits only. I have this fixed idea that my next machine must be a 64-bits, and I just won't pay that much to upgrade to yet another 32-bits system. I am not even able to install more RAM.

I would love to upgrade this old one to W7 for free, but that is usually not how the song goes.

------------------------
Edited:
I took the first step and downloaded the .iso. But before I install it, I'll have to count 120 days ahead so I can calculate to have the money (or a free key!?) when the trial period is ending ;-)

Looking at what it helpfully says for free, your main problem is windows search. That was my main problem on one of my machines. Nasty thing. And it is hard to uninstall, but can be disabled and its index minimised.

-WS has been a problem to me in more ways; the index is very seldom how I expect it to be. Sometimes, folders that I have manually added to be indexed, aren't, and sometimes they are. It's like my ex: "well, maybe I will, and then again maybe I won't!". From time to time I have used different search engines, but I have so far always returned to WS, because the others don't work quite like I would like them to. But I will see if totally disabling index will help - thank you!.

General Software Discussion / Re: Help me choose an online backup service
« Last post by Curt on February 15, 2012, 05:05 PM »
I am using BeeCloud Backup (who are using Livedrive). I started with a free version for 500GB, and upgraded to a €2 per month version for unlimited backup size. Downsides: The Livedrive application / connection gives slow upload speed, 380kbps, and too much CPU usage when scanning. Everything else is fine. They are now keeping 1.6TB for me at €24 per year.

Edited: Funny; they just updated the desktop application right now! Maybe they've improved it further? It is too early for me to tell.

Edited:
Hmm... I now realize that BeeCloud Backup is situated in EU. Do they have an American based server as well? I don't know. Livedrive is fine / the same, but more expensive: http://www.livedrive.com/

Do you have a website or a blog?

We will offer you a free unlimited backup account (yes, you read this right, not 512GB but UNLIMITED), if you write about us on your blog or website !

-the link from participant friedel goes to a .org page which has no link to the actual purchase prices for this program series; they must be found within the program or at the .com page http://www.remosoftware.com/buy :

INFO:

The first message during installation is this seldom seen text: >If you are using Windows 7/Windows Vista, you need to disable User Account Control (UAC) from your Control Panel to install this software.<

The average download speed for the 19MB installer was merely 158½KBps.

I think the program is fine, but I have so far not accepted the "one year only" limitation:

Upgrade policy

All upgrades are free for one year after the purchase of Bookmark Docs. After the first year, you can order new version with a 40% discount.

But thinking a second time, it seems to be a better offer than "major versions only"-offers; so far they have gone from version 2 to version 4 in just a year!

my version is Toolbox without BitDefender, sort of a Pro+, the same as is offered today:

due to licensing restrictions today's PowerArchiver 2011 Toolbox promotin does not include BitDefender Internet Security. However, it can be purchased as a separate add-on via the PowerArchiver store.

hmm... I first purchased a license for PA via Ashampoo!! It was of course very cheap and without lifetime license, I assume, but did include the extra extension for Outlook. Later the PA company offered me to upgrade to PA 2011 with a #lifetime# license for €8.73 EUR, but the cart did not include the extension. Or maybe I just didn't understand how to do. I upgraded but have not (yet) installed any of them..., so I don't know if the Outlook thing will be accepted by version 2011 and newer.

I am surprised that you are so pleased with PowerArchiver. Being sold via Ashampoo, even if only for a day, I thought it would turn out to be something a la PowerDesk from Avanquest... So your recommendation is a pleasant surprise to me, Thank You!, Who knows, one day I might even install the program!

Edited: Oh, I misread the confirmation email. The Outlook plug-in is free.

-sorry! Because you have quoted me, it is too late for me to edit my previous post.

What you may not have noticed is, "my second most often crashed program is: System Restore!" AND "my Vista is unstable". I could also quote myself from two other threads: "using System Restore didn't help", AND "my original (Vista) backup has been corrupted".

You probably didn't know all this, and I ask for your forgiveness for assuming you did. For me, the important feature of ReImage is above all the abillity to go online and REPAIR my Vista. System Restore cannot do any of this, because my backup has been corrupted.
