well, i'm pretty sure the raptor is quiet when it comes to spinning (mine are in cases, so i can't say what they sound like out in the open).

f0dder, i've got 2 gig of ram. i use photoshop, acdsee, illustrator, maybe dreamweaver now - all at the same time. do you think i'd benefit from doing the 'largesystemcache=1'?

i also do a fair bit of messing about with video, i.e. editing with premiere and virtualdub encoding - could they benefit from the above question also?

thanks.

well, to be honest, i think i'll end up using pencil and paper.

no matter how many times i try to use a graphics pen and tablet i just revert back to good old pen and paper - and i'm sure this applies to 'designing' a lot of things with a pc compared with more basic tools.

there's an immediate barrier there with the pc. it's just not right. i hate it.

i'm in the process of working out a new website - not something i'm in the habit of doing, so it didn't take long before i become overwhelmed by what i'm trying to do.

so, i thought, there must be a good way of web prototyping.

i came across 'Denim'. it tries to mimic what you'd do with paper - but has the advantage of being able to create links between the pages.

i've not tried it yet but i will give it a go. only real dissadvantage i see is that i'll be sat at the computer whilst using it - i'd rather be sat elsewhere whilst trying to be inventive/creative.

here's the link to the Denim homepage if you want to look further: http://dub.washingto....edu/projects/denim/

i have a couple of raptor drives: they are as quiet as any other drive if you are talking about spinning - maybe even quieter than the 'silent' samsung spinpoints. i know this because i've deliberately swapped drives in and out of the machine to try and work out where a typically annoying hard drive sound was coming from.

the problem you may find with the raptor is the head movement noise - there is no escaping it. i've got both raptor drives inside noise reducing cases and the head movement noise is still very obvious. it's quite a regular noise - funny that it's stopping doing it whilst i'm typing this.

is it a very loud annoying noise? not really. i really hate hard drive noises, i hate noisy pc's, but the noise the raptors make isn't what i'd call annoying. it's not a high pitched sound so that probably helps.

i read on another forum where someone described the raptors as sounding like machine gun fire from a few miles away. which is quite accurate.

i'd describe it like this: if you image someone drumming there fingers on top of a book, tap, tap, tap, in quick succession - then that's the sound of a raptor - how muted that sound is will just depend on the sound insulation you use in the pc.

if want total silence - forget about raptors. if you can handle a slight tapping background noise then they are okay. i do have the pc at ear level with open grills at the front of the case so this will obviously make the sound more noticeable to me. the 120mm slow moving fans in the case are just as loud as the sound of the raptors really, i.e. not completely silent, but more like an acceptable kind of sound - a low humming sound.

(if you really wanted i suppose i could do an audio recording and post it.)

lanux128, just tried 'jedi window dock' seems to work quite well at the moment. one thing i noticed straight away - it doesn't have the annoying complete screen refresh that 'wintabber' did simply when clicking on a tab.

will keep it running for a while to see what happens but i'm certainly impressed so far.

yeah great find! i think wintabber has potential too , but what do you mean by "buggy" guys? do you mean that it crashes your system, or it's just lacking on features? :tellme:, hope someone will make a similar app and improve it, :)

what i meant by "buggy" was that it became more trouble than it was worth. it would lose a window that was inside it - like i had closed the window, it had strange window resizing issues - that could be because i have 'dialogmove' running though, and it did something else that i can't remember at all now but when it did it i decided there and then i wouldn't use it any further.

those folder icons should come in handy, app.

kimmchii, xentient labels looks nice but it's $20. not sure i'd want to go that for this kind of thing.

« Last post by nudone on October 10, 2006, 03:35 PM »
just had another idea:

(might not be really related to gridmove but i'll make the suggestion here anyway.)

would it be possible to resize a window by left clicking (and holding) on the titlebar and then rolling the mouse wheel either up or down.

this is similar to how a few graphics programs 'zoom' in and out of an image, i.e. by using the scroll wheel on the mouse, sometimes with the addition of holding a key down at the same time.

it's just a thought.

thanks.

this was on Shell Extension City.

folder markers http://www.foldermarker.com/ lets you colour your folders - looks great as it so easy to use - just a right click and select from the menu.

not sure if you could do this but i was wondering if you could get around the 'restore' problem mentioned above by 'forcing' the restored window to center in the screen.

so, it would get it's restore size correct but instead of sticking to the edges of the screen it would jump to the center.

i'm hoping it might be possible as my work around fixed size 'restore' method isn't anywhere near as good the true restore that works normally.

OR,

to make even more impossible demands: would it be possible so that after the restore function has taken place - at the edges of the screen - the mouse cursor locks onto the titlebar so that you can drag the window to a better screen position?

i know, i know, why ask for such things. i just feel it would return the 'flowing' nature of how the program works - with less clicks of the mouse and kind of intelligent, useful automation in moving windows about.

edit:

ignore me, i'm just being picky.

Living Room / Re: anyone tried the google web accelerator?
« Last post by nudone on October 09, 2006, 03:23 PM »
wish i could remember, but the one you pay for (in the UK) does actually deliver compressed pages to you - you can actually configure how much you want the jpg's compressed that are downloaded in the page. there might be other compression settings but i can't remember now.

the main benefit of the service/tool was for dial-up users (obviously) but they did try to push it as a worthwhile service for broadband users also - which seemed less of a good idea.

just thought the google thing might be the same but it appears not (maybe).

that's just it really - has anyone tried the google web accelerator?

http://webaccelerator.google.com/

i've seen a service that you have to pay for here in the UK which is mean to be okay and works by sending you compressed versions of the the pages you are browsing.

i'm assuming the google accelerator does a similar thing.
