DC Gamer Club / Re: GOG.com's mystery gifts return
« Last post by Deozaan on December 02, 2015, 05:18 PM »
When not buying a gift code,  GOG will filter out games that are already in your library (I guess).

The random game picker will "favor" games you don't own. I don't think it guarantees you won't get one you don't own.

Also, this forum thread has a list of games being offered in the "Mystery Game" purchase: http://www.gog.com/f..._mystery_games/page1

Thanks for that link. I don't think I have any of the games listed in that thread (on GOG--I have some of them on Steam). There are a few I wouldn't mind. But knowing my luck, I'd get the ones I have absolutely zero interest in.

DC Gamer Club / GOG.com's mystery gifts return
« Last post by Deozaan on December 02, 2015, 11:22 AM »
GOG.com is having another big sale with deals changing every few days. Also returning is the mystery game, which was a pinata in the last sale, where you pay $3 for a game worth between $10-35 which is not listed in the current sales.

Did anyone find out last time if you got to find out what it was before deciding to keep it or gift it to someone else?

I found some with cords for more flexibility, but they're certainly not as sexy. Mind you, you can get them for $0.61 each. If saving that $0.19 is more important than sexiness. :P ;D

The cords probably make them a little less likely to break, too!

If you’re coming into this relatively new, or even if you need a little brush-up, let me state: Steve Meretzky has earned the title of “Game God” several times over, having been at the center of the early zenith of computer games in the 1980s and persisting, even thriving, in the years since. He continues to work in the industry, still doing game design, 35 years since he started out as a tester at what would become Infocom.

But more than that – besides writing a large amount of game classics in the Interactive Fiction realm, he also was an incredibly good historian and archivist, saving everything.

EVERYTHING.

When we finally connected during production (as it turned out, we lived within 10 miles of each other), Steve showed me his collection of items he had from the days of Infocom (which spanned from roughly 1981 through to the company’s eventual closing and absorption by Activision in the early 1990s).

Google Hangouts with Google Voice (USA & Canada? only) allows you to send & receive calls to/from a tablet.

Similarly, I think a Skype subscription will allow you to have a phone number people can call (or you can call from), which will ring on the Skype app on any device you've set up.

They've got a new release for folks to try out:

It's been a while, but hopefully it will have been worth it.

Build #2015101801

Release Notes
  • Update to Unity 5.2.2f1
  • Avoid crash when creating input context fails at startup
  • Make WebGL build output directory layout match the one generated on other platforms
  • Don't leak file handles when communicating with external processes (e.g. audio importer)
  • Known issue: There's a small regression in cursor offset handling in the game view

If I'm reading it correctly, it looks like this build is about a month old (2015-10-18), but they just barely got around to posting about it. Weird.

How much do you think it is better. I think IE under Win 10 has a problem with website scripts.

AFAIK even Microsoft thinks nobody should be using IE anymore. It's dead. Use Edge. They only keep it around for backwards compatibility for all those people/business who have applications which rely on IE.

While I love Namecoin, there are problems there. This article tells about how a company moved from Namecoin infrastructure to Bitcoin, and why. The "why" part is pretty important.

Interesting. It reminds me of something Andreas said in one of the videos you linked. Something about how even if altcoins are successful, that success will only help Bitcoin because Bitcoin can let the altcoins experiment (and fail or succeed) and then just implement the good stuff while avoiding the bad stuff.

General Software Discussion / Re: question about audio
« Last post by Deozaan on November 17, 2015, 06:12 PM »
I have never heard of programs with this set of features, and I wouldn't know why to need them.

Here's an example: Say you don't have a cell phone or a landline, so you take all your calls on your PC via Skype or other VoIP. But you need to have the headset unplugged so you can hear the incoming ring from your speakers if you're away from your PC. But then if you answer the call, you can't talk through your headset because all the audio is going through your speakers.

Being able to switch from speakers to headset without having to hang up and start a new call is a nice feature.

BUT, i believe what you'll find is that Windows 7 (and higher) has this feature built into it.

Nope.

Chevolume not only allows per-application volume control (which Windows 7+ has) but it also allows you to set which applications output to which audio devices (speakers, headset, etc.) all at the same time. With Windows it's all-or-nothing on an output audio device without 3rd party software like this.

That said, you could upgrade to Windows 7+ for the per-application volume control and then use some other software that allows you to output audio to different devices. I tried some software out a year or two ago that did something like this but I can't recall the name of it. I believe Skwire recommended it to me, so he'd probably know.

Windows 10 Pro comes with Hyper-V enabled by default, which messes with VirtualBox's ability to run 64-bit VMs. Here's a simple way to work around that:

You can disable Hyper-V without deinstalling it. Start a command prompt with administrator rights and execute the following command:

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype off

Reboot windows. Hyper-V is disabled now. If you want to enable it, then run this command:

bcdedit /set hypervisorlaunchtype auto

and reboot again.

Can you use CoinJar if you're not from AU?  Looks interesting...

Renegade seemed to imply that it was only available within AU, or a lot of extra work if not. But, FWIW, Coinbase seems to offer pretty much the same service as CoinJar, except not the Credit/ATM card.

This is my hesitation in getting in...  I just want some for purchases, not for investment.  But it's *still* scary!

I'm not a financial expert, but looking at a chart of the conversion rate for the past few months, Bitcoin seems to be in a slight bubble at the moment.

If I wanted to get some Bitcoin available for making purchases, but was afraid of the fluctuating value, I'd transfer some money to my Coinbase USD wallet and leave it there until I was ready to make a BTC payment. Then I could transfer the USD to my BTC wallet (for free, using Coinbase) when I was ready to make the payment in BTC, so the value of the BTC wouldn't have much time to fluctuate between converting USD->BTC and sending the BTC for payment.

But the thing you'd need to do is already have the USD set aside in an exchange such as Coinbase so that you can buy the BTC instantly instead of having to wait a week for bank transfers to go through.

Just my 2 satoshis. :P

P.S. If you do decide to use Coinbase, we'd both possibly benefit from you using my referral link I mentioned earlier. But I don't want people to think I'm just trying push for a referral, so I won't mention it again any time soon.

You can completely screw up any kind of "tracking" by doing 1 simple step from above and depositing into a new wallet. If anyone is tracking you, like an ad company, or marketing company, you've just screwed them by creating an entirely new wallet that isn't linked to you. They could try to do pattern matching, but honestly... that's grasping at straws and they're unlikely to ever be able to do that, ever.

(I am missing some highly technical points above, but I've been conservative. For more information you can look into how wallets treat "change". Also look into "dust". It's probably not worth your time.)

Thanks for the more detailed response. Of course I'm not looking to get into anything illegal or even shady. Nevertheless I was curious about the idea of "cleaning" the wallet occasionally.

If you want to get rid of any linkage, it's pretty easy. You can deposit coins in an exchange, then withdraw a few days later. That isn't a guarantee, but it vastly increases the probability that you don't receive any of your "old" coins.

Can you go into a little more detail about this? Perhaps specifically with how this would work with Coinbase? I was under the assumption that any bitcoins I deposited into Coinbase went into a wallet that belonged to me. So sending them all to Coinbase and then withdrawing them a few days later would just link everything to one address, and then everything from that address would come out into my new wallet, still linked.

Or do you mean sell them all off for fiat currency and then re-buy them all a few days later? Or something else entirely?

I've been using Coinbase for my exchange. If anyone else is interested in checking them out, you can use my referral code and we both get ~$10 worth of bitcoins if you ever purchase $100 of bitcoins or more (it can be over multiple transactions).

They have a nice interface and make it simple to know important information such as: How many bitcoins are in your account, how much those bitcoins are worth in your local currency, and the current exchange rate between BTC and your local currency. They even have mobile apps which allow you to access your information and buy/sell/send/receive bitcoins on the go. I like Coinbase.

Anyone interested in a personal exchange? I'd pay 44$ via paypal to get back 40$ in bitcoins (10% fee).

Still need this? I managed to get my hands on some. :)

So, basically, just go to the normal Windows 10 Upgrade page and do an in-place upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10? Interesting...

I did it and it worked just fine for me.

I'm now on Version 1511 (OS Build 10586.3). Heh. It says (c) 2016.

Has anyone gotten today's update? I'm still waiting, and Windows Update says there are no new updates for me. Anyone know how to force Windows 10 to download the latest update (without joining Insider/fast ring program)?

This article may answer the question.

The article says that if you've upgraded to Windows 10 within the last 31 days it won't install the update because it wants you to still have the opportunity to revert to your previous install within 30 days. That doesn't apply to me since I've had Windows 10 installed pretty much since the day it released. That said, it does have a tip on how to get the latest version anyway:

[H]ead over to the Windows 10 download page and hit the “upgrade” button. This will download Microsoft’s migration tool. While this might feel odd, this tool is prepped with the latest version of Windows 10, and will do an in-place upgrade of the OS for you. I haven’t updated my machine yet – although I plan to – but the process runs very much like a new install, so the usual disclaimer about making sure you have a good backup is relevant here.

This might seem a bit heavy-handed but the update does all of the same stuff when it arrives naturally, so it’s just a matter of hurrying the process along slightly.

The reason, apparently, for this is that Threshold is such a massive upgrade to the core of Windows 10 that it isn’t like a patch, or even a service pack. This is essentially a whole new version of Windows 10. This is, obviously somewhat backed up by Microsoft’s claim that Windows 10 would be the “last” version of Windows. Because of this, we won’t really see service packs any more, but just a new version of the OS. This makes some things a lot easier though, like installing Windows down the line without having to patch or slipstream the latest updates into your build.

So, basically, just go to the normal Windows 10 Upgrade page and do an in-place upgrade to the latest version of Windows 10? Interesting...

I've had my Start menu randomly refuse to open at all, including the Action Center, and sometimes any/every Metro app (Windows Store, Calcuator, etc.) as well! This has happened to me twice, so for my own future reference and in the hopes it helps others, the instructions found here seem to fix it for me:

  • Right click on the Start Menu button -> Search -> Windows PowerShell -> Run As administrator
  • Paste the following command into PowerShell and execute it:
Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

If you can't get Search to work, since it's also part of the Start menu, you can just use Ctrl-X to open the power menu, then run Command Prompt as administrator, then from the console type "powershell" to start PowerShell. Then paste in the command above and it should fix everything (but it can take a few minutes).
